Success Challenge: Live Case Study Going from Zero to $xxx/Day

Your mission STM Comrades, should you choose to accept it, involves a challenge that some might call impossible and that only the most determined and relentless affiliates among us will survive. But we know, that within the information warehouse of STM there contains a nuclear arsenal of ideas, strategies and advice that will change the future of any affiliate that takes action to reach their goals.

The Challenge

Starting from ground zero, infiltrate any country that stands in your way and crush any offer than shows signs of life, to build a profitable mobile pop campaign to $xxx/day or more within 30 days.

The Case Study

I will be your Major during this mission and will be conducting a live case study that may include both written and/or video updates along the way. The exact offer(s), countries or traffic sources that I use will not be disclosed until this challenge has completed to protect the integrity of the case study. However, you will be aware of the verticals I test, my day-to-day actions, methods, data and decision making along the way.

The goal of this case study is to help you with an over-the-shoulder look into building a profitable campaign and to empower you to take action.

The Rules

These are the rules and guidelines by which I will approach this case study.

- Traffic Type: Mobile Pop
- Traffic Sources: Any mobile pop source.
- Affiliate Networks: Any affiliate networks.
- Vertical / Offer Types: Any vertical but my strengths are in apps, mobile content and antivirus so I will begin there.
- # of Campaigns: As many as it takes while staying within budget.
- Methods: All methods allowed excluding iframing/clickjacking/other malicious methods.
- Other: I will not be using any prior data that I have collected. No currently running campaigns or tests are allowed.

- Timeline: 30 day challenge starts on April 1st and ends on April 30th, 2017 @ 11:59pm CST
- Budget: $1000 max ad spend to reach goal.

- Place: This will be held within the STM forum and an active membership is required.

Official Update #1

Alright, here is the first update of the challenge and glad to see we already have a few soliders willing to head into battle!

The Strategy

I use many different strategies and testing methods that greatly depend on the type of offers, how quickly I want to test, how much money I'm willing to lose per test in order to find what works and other factors. Over the course of this challenge, I am trying to take things at a pace that I was in when I first started. Many of you lack the motivation to launch dozens of campaigns per week (just like I did in the beginning) but if you look back at one of my follow alongs, there is an update where I share exactly how many campaigns/offers/landers I tested to that point. You will see that I tested ALOT of campaigns and offers. But the idea is to launch a few campaigns per week until I find something with potential and then grow it from there.

For now, I have decided to kickoff this challenge with a particular approach I like to call the Cherry Picker. It's not always the best method but I will start here and if nothing starts to show good results I will switch up my approach to a different method.

Now the Cherry Picker is a method that allows me to focus on one or two offers per campaign that has been confirmed to convert by my affiliate managers. Many of you may be saying "all your previous advice has said to test many offers in the beginning"... well that is true and that usually is the method I prefer to use. The reason I'm wanting to start with this method is to show there is no one way to test or run campaigns. There are some methods that work better than others, then there are some methods that get you some momentum quickly but each have their pros/cons.

The method goes like this... take 1-2 offers that are recommended by your affiliate manager that has confirmed to be doing atleast $100/day revenue over the last 7 days, grab 2-3 landing pages and setup a test on 3 traffic sources.

What's the logic behind this method? Well, if the offer is already confirmed to be converting for another affiliate then I just need to focus on finding the type of traffic that its converting on, narrow it down to a good landing page and then continue improving with more offers thrown in along the way.

Does this method always work? No. Does this method reveal the best converting offer? Many times it does not but you start with an offer that is converting (hopefully it does for me). But it allows me to test more quickly and if I get some conversions on the main 1-2 offers I'm testing, I will then explore more offers.

The First Task

In anticipation of this challenge and because it started on the weekend, I asked 3 of my affiliate managers yesterday for a list of antivirus pins and mobile apps that are doing well and focused around lower payout offers less than $1. Because I'm working with only a $1k budget I need to be smart with my testing and be sure the offer payouts are low enough to allow me to collect enough data within a reasonable amount of ad spend.

Two of my managers got back to me and the 3rd will shoot me a list on monday. So I have a list of offers to work through and do some research on. I don't work a lot on the weekends but I will be poking around AdPlexity and check the search volumes available for some GEO's at a few different traffic sources.

Stay tuned for the next update.

One question: Can I use my camps which are already runing for this challenge, or I need to start from scratch?

As the rules state in my first post, any existing campaigns do not qualify. That is to give everyone a fair starting ground and to start at the same time. If your current campaigns require attention and you are focused on scaling and maximizing your cashflow I would focus on your existing profitable campaigns and you can always pickup in the challenge later in the month. You don't have to start today, it just helps give you more time to reach that $25+ mark to qualify to win.

Are sweeps okay for this as well? Or should we stick to pins and apps?

As the rules state in the first post, you can run any vertical or offer type. The pins and apps are just what I'm planning to start with.

Official Update #2

This is just a short update before I head off to bed.

This afternoon I chose 2 offers that are in the same geo and vertical, these came out of the list list I had requested from my two affiliate managers. Next, I ripped 3 landing pages, cleaned them up and submitted a new campaign to one traffic source. It should be approved tomorrow and I have set the day parting to only run during the best hours of the day to maximize my budget. I have set the initial test budget for this campaign to $20.

My goal is to identify if this offer will convert on this traffic source, then I will continue putting more effort into it if there are positive signs.

What's to Come

Tomorrow's game plan is to setup this campaign on two more traffic sources and then run a test of $20 to each campaign. Then spend a small amount of time looking through my list of offers and decide which one will be my second campaign to begin prepping.

After I have some initial results from these 3 test campaigns, I will post some of the initial results.

I'm looking forward to seeing what results the other participants will start to show on their follow alongs! If you haven't already joined the challenge, get on board!

Official Update #4

Ok, here's another update as to what is happening and a little more insight to what I'm testing.

GEO: Less than 20 million population
Vertical: Antivirus
Payout: $0.30

So after selecting the two offers I was going to test, come to find out that one of the offers got paused this morning. In addition to that, after checking the 3 traffic sources I wanted to test on I found that one of the sources had almost no traffic at all while the other two had decent volume considering the size of this GEO.

You may be thinking... why are you targeting such a small GEO and low payout offer if you want to hit $xxx/day? Well, the idea was to demonstrate to you newer affiliates that there are two ways to hit that goal. One, by focusing on GEO's with either higher payouts or higher volume... or Two, focus on building a few smaller campaigns that collectively add up to the $xxx/day goal.

Being that I'm working with a budget of only $1k during the Success Challenge, like many of you, I figured this would be a better starting approach to help relate to your current position. Not to mention, I usually don't target GEO's this small and so you find out that you can make them work pretty easy in most cases.

Despite the changes above, this is what I decided to do...

Launch the campaign on the two sources that had a little volume, use just the one offer that is available... but instead of testing the 3 landers I ripped and cleaned up, I will only test 1 lander. This will allow me to test faster and to see if I should even waste my time. If the traffic volume estimates were higher, I would test all three but its not too big.

So here are some initial results to share but the campaign tests are still actively going, so I will break down a more detailed recap after the tests have fully completed.

As you can see from the screenshot above, one traffic source (running for 4 hours so far) has a good deal of volume for this GEO while the other traffic source (running for 1.5 hours so far) has minimum volume. But the conversion rate is very very different and the second one is already profitable right out of the gate... even if just by a small amount

What we have validated... this offer does convert on both sources, so it will likely convert on several other sources if you decided to test them. I'm only testing one landing page at the moment so there may be opportunity there as well. If I was to guess, you could launch this campaign on 3-5 sources and collectively turn it into a $50-100/day profit campaign range... after all the list from my affiliate managers were for offers doing atleast $100/day in revenue.

I'll share more with you guys once this test wraps up but as a natural progression takes place, I am going to focus or GEOs with more volume so I don't have to manage several little campaigns. This is the type of mindset that happens when you start to get more experienced in running campaigns. But until then and especially if you are on a budget, start small and simple. There are so many low hanging opportunities that guys like me typically pass up!

Stay tuned!

Andrew

Thanks Mr P your threads are always a goldmine of info.

What factors make an offer "low hanging fruit" as you say? Is it the lower payout, or the smaller geos, or the type of offer? These do seem best for newbies but when you have little-to-no skills analyzing offers it can be tough figuring out which offers are the low hanging fruit to go after

It means the GEO's and offers that affiliates with larger budgets and with more experience don't waste time with... exactly like the one I'm currently testing for this case study! haha - unless it surprises me over the next 24 hours I will probably just post the offer here and have you guys take off with it while I puruse something bigger for the sake of the case study.

Low hanging fruit can vary but the easiest of the easy are...

(Less than 50 mil population GEO's) + (Payouts lower than $1) + (app installs OR antivirus pins OR sweepstakes) + (testing on 2-3 traffic sources per offer/geo) = easy low hanging fruit

Once you've had a few successes with the above approach, it's only natural to gravitate to higher payout offers or GEOs with more volume potential so you can more easily hit those big numbers we all desire. But until then, mass testing a bunch of offers using the above formula will yield you several $10-50/day campaigns... get 3-5 of those campaigns going at once and you got a nice little stream of profit coming in.

Reinvest as you build up.

How do you know beforehand what the best hours are?

Glad to have ya on the challenge!

The general rule of thumb is the hours of 6pm-midnight in the GEO's time is the 'best' hours. It generally just means that there are less distractions and more free time for people during those hours. They aren't working, no school, etc.. they are probably at home on their couch or depending on the type of traffic you are buy they could be watching porn haha.

Again, this is just a general idea and in most cases this basic timeframe is a great starting point.

Official Update #5

Ok, if you've been following along this far you have an idea of what I've been testing.

Currently, I've not made much progress like many of you who are just onlookers who dont take action (karate chop!) haha, it's the coffee I promise.

Here are the results from 24 hours of running my first campaign test. To recap, I'm only testing one offer and one lander but on two different traffic sources.

Results

Traffic Source 1# (Zeropark) has more volume and spent nearly the full test budget of $15 before I decided to pause it as I noticed that none of the segments showed big promise.

Mobile Carrier

OS

Placements

Traffic Source #2 (undisclosed) has less volume but the type of traffic seems to be much more aligned to make this offer work very well. It's unfortunate that there is so little volume

Mobile Carrier

OS

Placements

As you can see, there is a big difference in performance and it literally was the result of either losing money on a failed campaign or hitting profits on a successful campaign. Traffic Source #2 struggled to spend $5-6 but produced $15 in revenue. Not bad for a 24 hour period and I literally did not cut anything.

The setup of both of these campaigns on a Run-of-Network format and left it wide open because there isn't much traffic in this GEO so I didn't want to restrict it until I identify for sure what worked and what didn't.

I have decided to abandon this campaign as $10/day profit is not going to take me to my goal for the Success Challenge of $xxx/day so I will move on to hunting a bigger fish

Now, you could make this work and get it up to the $50-100/day revenue mark if you tested it across several other sources and find the ones it converts on, there is almost zero optimization needed. This is a perfect starter campaign and since I'm abandoning it, I will share with you these details.

Offer Details

GEO: Kazakhstan
Affiliate Network: ClickDealer - Offer ID 21455
Payout: $0.30
Traffic Source: I will not disclose which source you should test, afterall, the purpose of this challenge is to get you to take action and I've given you just about everything you need. So if you go and test 10 sources, you maybe could get a few of them to work at a small level but this is a great practice campaign for a newbie.
Tip* - Landing page needs to be in Russian.

If several of you decide to jump on this at once, you may not see the same results but then again, no one knows the exact traffic source I was using.

I've already begun to setup more campaigns to test and find something bigger.

Good luck and fight to survive in this challenge!

Official Update #8

Hey soldiers! It's been a busy few days in the battle but I'm stoked to share some awesome results with you guys!

I have been quiet over the last few days as I was enjoying some downtime over the Easter weekend but that didn't stop me from scaling the winning campaign I told you guys about in the previous update!

After hearing back about my quality check on the winning campaign I really amp'd things up. Due to my past experience running app campaigns, I was pretty sure my quality would come back ok and so while waiting for the results of the quality check, I went ahead and took these steps to prepare...

1. Stopped running all other tests and potential campaigns to conserve my budget for the winning campaign.
2. I setup two duplicate campaigns at a lower bid on the exact same traffic source and one whitelist campaign on the exact same traffic source with my best placements with a slightly higher bid. (this doesn't work for every source)
3. I setup new campaigns on 3 new traffic sources.
4. All campaigns were approved and was just waiting for the green light from my affiliate manager.

My very next steps were...

1. Turn on my original campaign and launched the 3 new campaigns on my main traffic source but doing so one by one. The reason is, I already knew it was profitable on this source so I wanted to maximize it and squeeze out as much profit as I could to best utilize my existing budget. Once I had increased my daily profits on this source, only then would I start focusing on scaling to the other sources that I already had campaigns prepared on. (this is how you approach things smart when working with a limited budget, slow and steady growth until you are in a better position to take more risks)
2. Continued improving my original campaign by blacklisting more placements and also doing so on the other duplicate lower bid campaigns that I launched one by one.
3. I didn't end up testing more offers or landers because this combination was already working pretty solid, so I decided to focus on improving what I had and scale it while I can.
4. At this point, I had only focused on the one primary traffic source but keep reading for more info.

So here are the results from month to date on all campaign tests for the Success Challenge and my scaled campaigns over the last few days are included:

So yes, I've gone a little over my budget but now the campaign is profiting.. why should I stop when its making me money

Last 7 Days of Results

Milestone: First $XXX Profit Day Reached!

Once I turned the original campaign back on and then launched one of the duplicate campaigns, other than some minor tweaks to the placements and bids, the profit shot up really quick! My first $xxx/day of profit on the Success Challenge happened on Saturday April 15th.

BUT.... Then came the bad news.

Things were going well on this campaign but then I was notified that the offer was pausing. I didn't even get a chance to scale this campaign to the other sources I had planned to, this could've been a bigger campaign than I originally thought!

So what do I do now? I just decided to pause the campaign, grab some pizza and quit altogether... heck no! There are no lazy affiliates who just give up in the Major's army!

My Next Steps

1. There's still 12 days left in the challenge and I'm going to get more campaigns up this week. I'm going to fight and try to find another $xxx/day campaign before the end of the month so I finish strong!
2. I still have the Global - Utility App offer that I could revisit since it had potential but I've already outted my source and vertical so its likely to be crowded now. There is that 2nd offer which had potential that I can continue testing as well as new offers.
3. I'm going to also check if I can find a replacement offer to test with my winning campaign in an effort to revive it!

So if you are still being lazy, just a reader and not an action taker - I challenge you to join the Success Challenge while you can, this may be your last chance to make real progress in your affiliate journey and to get ahold of the awesome prizes up for grabs!

Why have most of the follow alongs gone quiet?? There are just a couple make updates, I want to hear from the rest of you!

There are many different optimization methods that can be used, some are better suited for certain traffic sources, etc.

Adjusting the frequency cap is a great method in some cases and for certain offers on certain traffic sources I duplicate the campaign at a lower bid and then adjust the frequency cap. You usually don't want to make too many changes at once so that you can validate that your changes are working correctly when you implement them. So I tend to duplicate the camp to make sure its working, then make the next adjustment to the campaign.

Just a short update to motivate you guys... if you've read my easy Point and Shoot method, read it here, you'll realize that you can quickly find an offer that works and is profitable.

I decided to highlight this method by running a quick test using it today, here are the results so far:

I literally took 15 minutes to pick a geo, pick two mobile carriers and about 10 offers per carrier. Spent another 10 minutes adding them to Voluum, setup the direct link flow and campaign, then turned on the campaign at the traffic source.

Within 10 minutes there were 3 offers converting right away, I stopped all the other offers and sent all traffic for Carrier 1 to these 3 offers. Now I'm collecting data and seeing what I need to blacklist.

So you have no excuse to not go out and launch campaigns!

Andrew
Simple method bring the amazing result.

1.what's the stander to choose geos or carrier?i used your method, but when i choose target,i always don't know how to choice....
2.if i test some offers on a source ,but it get
bad result. what should i do? Is it to give up or test them on another traffic source?

There is no standard for choosing geos/carriers. I tend to focus on geo's that are 50 mil+ population and have 1 or 2 really big mobile carriers with lots of offers for them.

I always test on multiple traffic sources, 2-3 usually because they perform very different. If they all get back results, then just move on to another geo/carrier. When direct linking you will start to see results pretty quick, if not, then usually the offer/geo/carrier doesn't end up working well enough to continue.

hi andrew,

are there any guidelines on how to select landers to test from adplexity?
example:
1. min number of hits (200?)
2. min days of running (i read somewhere that braun suggest 5 days min) - maybe mrbraun can chip in too on this post
3. filter (last 7 days or last 30 days)
4. newest, running longest, most traffic?

yesterday, i grabbed 5 landers and ran traffic on them. here is the result. the offer is a converting offer and the landers are throughly cleaned. this is not my first campaign. i'm doing xx/day profit and trying to grow. tracking is correct because i also ran small amount of dl and there is 2 conversion. traffic source is propellerads.

There is no exact science to using AdPlexity. Here are some basics that I look for...

1. Select Popup
2. Select a GEO
3. Select a Traffic Source (optional)
4. Select to show the data between 5 and 15 days, sometimes I'll do 10-30 days.
5. Sort by longest running... and then I sort by most traffic.

There are many ways to use AdPlexity, this is just one method.

Final Update and Selected Winners!

So April was both an exciting and busy month for me. In addition to my normal campaigns and other business, I setup many campaigns for the Success Challenge and was able to hit the $xxx/day profit goal on April 15th with $237 profit!

That offer later got paused so I had to move on and was able to find another solid offer that is still running strong. I shared alot of details through this processs and I was really dissappointed in the lack of participation, but it just goes to show that many people are not willing to commit and put the effort in to make this work.

There have been several strategies that I've shared throughout this thread that can help anyone reach the $xxx/day mark, and just this morning on of the students that I'm coaching sent me a message on Skype to share a screenshot of his results from yesterday... he hit $433 in profit... that is a huge increase from him only being able to do low $xx/day for over a year.

That goes to show, anyone willing to put in the work and act on the advice given throughout STM can accomplish the same thing.

The Final Results for the Success Challenge

Following the same various testing methods I have throughout the whole Success Challenge, I was able to find several profitable campaigns. Some were small profit, some were middle of the road and one really good campaign. The last week of the challenge, I revisited the 1 of the offers that showed potential previously and I also retested several of the original campaigns that failed because new offers came out for those GEOs. I've decided to keep these results in the chart below blurred so that I can share some good information with the Success Challenge winners and help them get the ball rolling.

So let me share the final results with you and then I will announce the winners of the Success Challenge.

You can see, that I didn't put full time effort into these campaigns (until I found the bigger one) because I still have my own campaigns to run, but if you apply yourself and actually test campaigns/offers/landers/sources - you will find something that works!

The Success Challenge Winners Are...

First, I want to thank each person that participated in the challenge and I hope it was a great learning experience for you as well as others who read through it. Secondly, I appreciate all those who contributed to the challenge and to providing feedback on the various follow alongs. And a special thanks to AdPlexity (kinghustler) and the Free AWE Gold Passes (cmdeal) for their generous giveaways and support!

Now.. drum roll please... the chosen winners were selected based on meeting the qualifications and for their excellent follow alongs... and the winners are...

Excellent, I'm glad you could reach such nice numbers and that some of the participants managed to get into GREEN as well. Congrats to the winners!

Congrats to everyone - Andrew for doing this, and all the challenge participants for putting in serious effort, and of course to the 2 winners too

I think the biggest winner here was the STM community though. Hope to see many of you in Berlin! You rock!

This time I think I win incrediblely. Not my powerful, justthe participants do not seem to work hard.I stop updated a few days, because I went to BeiJing.
I know this is not the reason, but I think I am working hard, I update slowly because of my poor English. I have to write much time every update.
Thanks for adrew and cmdeal.
This challenge I learned a lot of knowledge, found a new affiliate network ,understanding 2 strategy to get profit and tested a lot of traffic sources.
In the next work, I hope to learn from you more.
In addition, congratulations kelvonroy, you are really very powerful.
I hope make more friends, if you love affiliate marketing(not only want to make money),maybe you can add me.It's my career and life.

Wow...thanks guys for putting this out.

1 Gold Ticket to AWA + A Consultation session with Mr Payne, it is just a lot.

I learned a lot in this challenge. In a month, I learned a lot more than a decade of reading. Maybe I'm just exaggerating but after I started launching campaigns consistently instead of just reading threads, More and more questions started coming up, things I would never question myself if I spent most of the time not taking action.

I can now find good offers and winning combos but I still fail in the scaling process. But overall, I'm enjoying the progress. The offer that gave me XXX a day revenue is in the antivirus pin vertical in an unsaturated geo.

Thanks so much for the support

This case study is surprising. He clarified many things to me. Thank you very much for this contribution.

I have a beginner question: I'm trying some offers. Sometimes an offer receives 700/800 visits and then, after some hours, does not receive traffic anymore. Does it depend on the offer bidding? What do you advice me? Do I have to test the highest or lowest bidding?

Thanks again.

P.S. = I have set bidding at $ 2.33

Could be a lot of things :

- daily $ cap
- your budget
- sudden spike in competition, but this is unlikely if the traffic stops completely

Also we need to clarify some things here : offer is the product that you send traffic to, I guess you are talking about traffic at the traffic source level. So in other words, you see traffic flowing from the source, then all of a sudden it stops? Or does it only decrease?

If it stops, it should be a cap or budget problem ... if it decreases, it could be a bidding problem : due to an increase of competition, you are not bidding enough. The traffic also decreases during certain period of the day (night).

Last possible thing would be a reporting problem/bug.

The traffic doesn't completely stop, but decreases. As I thought, probably, the bidding is too low (since I don't hit daily budget).

Hello, thank you for this wonderful case study, its really insightful.

I see that in majority of your traffic sources, the CPM is .5-.6$. Do you mind sharing what those traffic sources are? So far I've used propellerads and popads and the CPM is usually > $1.5.

I didn't even know it was possible to get quality traffic that cheap that converts.

05-14-2018 05:31 PM #54 Mr Payne (Member)

It's going to vary by the GEO and the Source you are using. Sometimes on PropellerAds you can use SmartCPA and get the CPM average pretty low.

Many sources let you bid as low as .50 cpm but you may not always get traffic. Zeropark, Propeller, PopAds etc.

Ah I see. In my experience with Propeller, its quite difficult to get traffic in small geos with a small cpm. But in your KZ geo, you had < $1 CPM.

What are usually your go-to traffic networks for testing if an offer works? I would sign up to as many as I possibly could myself but my budget isn't that great for the min. deposits required for some of the networks.

Thanks again for this thread, I'm extremely grateful. You've given me inspiration and hope.

05-14-2018 05:46 PM #56 Mr Payne (Member)

Dont focus on testing by just doing low CPM bids, that's not a good idea most of the time.

And I listed sources in the last reply that work well, you just have to test every place is different results.
