FUCK IT: Machete's Diving into PPV (27)

FUCK IT: Machete's Diving into PPV

I'm still running my tiny POF camps, but after analyzing my past dating campaigns on PPV, I realized I was onto something. Sure, I went through my initial $200 spend at LeadImpact with a negative ROI. However, I did get a quick taste of PPV and I dig it. There are less variables involved.

Here were my stats for my first $200 spend:
Spend: $198.56
Revenue: $98.00
Profit: -$100.56
ROI: -$50.64

Lessons Learned:
1) Don't start with too many targets

I had 326 targets my first time around and after a few days, I was able to narrow down to a few that were converting. Unfortunately, my budget was blown the first few days because of some URLs I targeted. At least I know now to watch for those.
2) Only test string variations after finding a profitable complete URL/KW
Right off the bat, I tested out string variations of my targets. This is obviously how I ended up with 300+ targets right off the bat.
3) Watch stats like a hawk in the beginning to be able to pause those high volume non-converting targets

Next Steps

When I tested out what my direct linked offers looked like on LI through the AffExpert Pop Up Previwer, while you can still kinda see the CTA's, I realized I would definitely get more conversions if I had a landing page. I believe even those image landing pages should be fine as long as everything fits in the LI pop up window.

That's why today, after going through my stats and realizing what's possible with PPV, I was like "fuck it" and got a VPS from BeyondHosting with the 50% coupon. My shared reseller account is currently being transferred from Hostgator w00t!

Having the added expense of a VPS is that fire under my ass I needed to light.

POF is a great traffic source and all, but if I can accomplish what I vision with PPV, I'll be a much happier person

Kudos for not giving up. Most people say "oh damn I lost $100 this shit doesn't work". PPV either you get it, you figure it out, or you cry to mama.

Grats on the VPS, you'll be moving to a dedi soon

Hope it all works out for you.

I like you are planning on the switch from Hostgator to Beyondhosting.... how did that all go and what was your final price tag to move all your other hosted sites?

PPV has been my bread and butter for quite a long time. I haven't made a killing at it but it does bring in some extra cash from time to time.

It's amazing what you can learn when you see what your LP looks like in the pop up window. That was an eye opener.

Question for others.... Once your ad is clicked in the pop up window, how are you redirecting the viewer to another window besides changing that "new window" feature.? Is there a string of code or something I can add?

I know I need to learn how to use the example shown here with the .php stuff (Offertest.zip) but I am an idiot when it comes to all of that, need someone to hold my hand at first.

Thanks man. It really means a lot. I just see myself scaling a lot bigger on PPV than on POF with the same amount of work and effort.

Thanks! It came out to $41/month. However, I thought the CPanel addon was also 50% off. Following up with Tyler on this. Still, for the first 6 months, that's a pretty solid deal. It's almost double what I pay for a HG reseller, but damn it's fast...and I can finally test out landers without having to worry about load times

And about sending someone from a pop up to a new window, do you mean by adding the "target="_blank"" to your link URL? For example:
<a href="http://www.offerURL.com" target="_blank"><img src="CTAimage"></a>

Props to you for stepping your game up.

Taking some risk is a must in this game.

As for your question , adding target="_blank" will do the job.

Thanks, Besmir! Now if only CPVLab support would respond to my license resetting ticket, then maybe I can finally get the ball rolling...

...in the meantime, I've been scraping URLs for my dating campaign I started while spying on the competition with the Hotbar and Gamevance toolbars. In the beginning, I'll be direct linking. Then once I find my most successful targets, I'll split test direct linking and LPs.

For my other campaign idea, it's something like Stack's Justin Bieber campaign. Basically, it's a targeted poll to fans of the target. It's a low-competition niche (won't see for sure until I start bidding) and potentially high volume, so we'll see what happens. The steps I plan to take for this campaign are:

1) Find several submit offers from different networks for rotation
2) Scrape URLs related to this subject I have in mind
3) Group the scraped URLs, theming them
4) Make simple poll landing pages designed after the URL groups and the offers

I know someone who did a cool 500k+ on a pretty simple idea.

Should a beginner also go with a VPS?

Or is hostgator fine?

Go with VPS (as im now finding out). Its much faster for seeing your tracking and testing landers

Thanks sking.

Another question:

Does a VPS have the cpanel, ftp, and
all the other stuff to edit your page?

By default most do not, but you can pay extra for them to be added to your VPS. It's well worth taking the time learning how to get around a Linux system, too. And it'll save your in cPanel licenses.

True, it's great to learn Linux administration, but at the same time, it's much better, for me at least, to spend the extra on a CPanel and a fully managed VPS so I can allocate the majority of my time learning how to make more money Being a tech dork, I'd definitely want to learn that stuff eventually.

Update: Rob reset my license and he's been responding quite quickly today for those with active tickets.

Question for everyone - when tracking with CPVLab, do you use the https or http for your tracking URL?

07-07-2011 07:55 PM #16 bbrock32 (Administrator)

Http , it will be faster since data wont be encrypted.

thanks for the input on the referring link!

So now that you have your servers changed have you seen an improvement in your stats yet?

I was direct linking when I was still on shared hosting, so I won't really notice a difference. Also, I was never hitting high volume.

So for my dating campaign, I didn't get any conversions last night even after targeting my optimized URLs. It might have to do with several factors:

1) The offers were only directed towards females
2) On some offers the full CTA wasn't really visible on the pop up and on others the offer logo wasn't showing...no bueno

I would probably set up some quick landing pages to see what's up.

However, now that I have a VPS and can easily test LPs, I'm going to do something along the lines of Stack's Justin Bieber campaign. I have a topic that I can easily scale the fuck out of if successful. Since the offer payouts are lower, it'll be cheaper for me to test and hopefully these targeted LPs will convert.

I'll put the dating on the backburner for now.

Here are the steps I've taken so far:
1) I found iPad offers on EWA, A4D, Peerfly, WSM, and NB
2) Scraped a good amount of URLs on my subject...had to limit myself to only a fraction of what I scraped since I was hitting about 2K targets lol...using the first 200 to start

By the end of the day, I should have:
1) Finished making 4 LP's in Photoshop (poll/quiz style)
2) Setup my files using tijn's templates
3) Setup the campaign in CPVLab
4) Upload files to my server
5) Submit my campaign to LeadImpact

Once I test and figure out what works for the iPad offers, then I'll test other offers that are applicable to my demographic. Once I have offers/LP's I can rotate, hopefully I can have something that lasts a while for me.

Expected Outcome of this Campaign:
1) Learn the basics of PPV
2) Get my first taste of scaling
3) Turn this campaign into my bread and butter consistent money maker to fuel bigger and badder campaigns

I need a tiny bit of consistency so I can build up my capital. Hopefully my idea will make that a reality

Thanks!

Another question for everyone - on LeadImpact, is there anything I need to indicate on my landing pages to ensure proper compliance for Email Submits?

Right now, I plan to have on my LPs:
1) A poll/trivia question
2) Something below the question like - "Vote/Answer correctly to Win a Free iPad!"
3) Either one main image or two for certain questions
4) CTA's for answering the question
5) Disclaimer at the bottom thanks to tijn's template

Is there anything missing I need to add to comply with LI rules?

07-08-2011 10:03 PM #21 machete ()

Update:

Went along with what I had, finished my LPs, uploaded my files to my server, and submitted my campaign to LI. Now I just have to wait...possibly until Monday lol.

Pretty stoked to find out that no one is bidding on any of my URLs. I know some of these targets usually get high traffic, but I'm not sure if any people from that demographic actually have LI's Hotbar installed. Only time can tell

Next Steps
1) As I wait, I'll be practicing my HTML and CSS so I can create more advanced LP's
2) Add in an iPad offer from WSM once my AM approves my requests
3) Catch up on True Blood lol

07-09-2011 02:41 AM #22 machete ()

LOL!

So my Email submit idea was a BUST! It's been running since it was approved at 7pm and the only impressions I've received were from LI checking my LP and offer. I basically have THE main keyword and URL of this topic without any luck so far. I'll keep running it to see what happens at other hours, but on the whole, I don't see this really working out. I had a feeling my demographic wouldn't really have Hotbar installed.

Rather than leave myself high and dry this weekend, I brought my dating campaign back to life and introduced landers. To reduce the variables, I stuck to solely the SpeedDate for females dating offer. Also, I'm only targeting URLs that are close to the minimum bit and no higher than 0.02 I currently have 3 landers similar to the offer page in rotation. Critiques are encouraged:

LP1

Cut and pasted bits and pieces of the offer page here.

LP2

Basically edited the offer page.

LP3

Ripped off one of my POF ads here lol.

Next Steps
1) Keep running this campaign through the weekend until I can find winning URLs
2) If I don't find winning URLs, then I'll move onto this next batch I scraped
3) If I do find winning URLs, then I'll test more landing pages

Things to Keep in Mind
Since my offer is for females only, I need to take that into account with my target URLs. I caught some gay dating URLs in the mix, so I had to axe those. I'll update later tonight or tomorrow with my stats.

07-09-2011 03:11 PM #23 machete ()

Update:

My dating campaign tanked...and I wish I could test more URLs but LI won't approve my new targets until Monday.

So what did I do? I made a few landing pages that looked like dating sites and had poll questions leading to an iPad submit. Have 2 conversions so far lol. With PPV, I'm going to stick with the email submits for now, as dating is a different beast compared to on POF. For some reason, through PPV testing, I have a better idea of what I can do with POF dating campaigns, especially with the whole constant rotation deal.

Good work so far.

If you keep at it you will find something that converts!

One common theme I have noticed is that I am getting conversions by "popping" a similar site. I don't know how else to explain except use an example:
1. Offer that promotes email submit for "apples"
2. Promote the offer to sites that like other fruits say something like "oranges"
3. Both are fruits but the "apple" URL are not converting for me while the "oranges" are converting.

Hope that helps explain it but just thought I would pass that along.

07-09-2011 06:37 PM #25 bbrock32 (Administrator)

Where did you run that dating lander?

From my experience TV converts much better for dating.

Also , from what I've tested , you can never get only females to see your lp.

You should try making a page that has both males/females profiles.

Adding "Online Now" near profiles and calling out user's city help CTR a lot.

Give that a try and let me know.

Thanks man! That's the best way of explaining my targeting plan lol. It worked for a bit, getting like 5 conversions a day direct linking from one URL, then it stopped working this week.

Besmir, I was running this on LI lol...this campaign started out as direct linking, so I did a bait and switch with my LPs...just gotta make sure to switch back to my original direct linked offer when I plan to add more targets.

About dating converting better on TV, I had a feeling things were like that. Have you managed to get it to work for LI though? Also, what would you say generally works best on LI?

As for my LP's, the reason I started with female-target LP's was because I can really only profit right now with female offers that have higher payouts. Even on POF, I struggle with anything that targets men for some reason haha, while I somehow kinda just "get" the whole marketing to females thing.

For now, I'll probably leave the dating to my POF campaigns and work on email submit campaigns on PPV similar to the Justin Bieber idea. What I've been doing with my dating targets is a poll, asking viewers things like "Do You Think You Will Find Love Online?" or "Struggling to Get a Date Online?"...vote to win a iPad 2, etc etc.

3 conversions so far. I'll let my traffic run for a few days.

07-14-2011 06:10 PM #27 machete ()

Haven't had much luck with dating campaigns on LI, so I'm leaving those to POF for now.

Okay, so far I've been getting a few conversions a day promoting a gaming offer with gaming-themed targets. Been running this for a few days to see if there are any week and day parting trends.

As an experiment for another campaign, I tried targeting the order confirmation page of Amazon with email submits lol...I had to buy something from there anyway. My idea came from polarbacon's case study where he popped email submits on reg pages of other email submits. This morning, my keywords were disapproved because:

"Targeting of POS (point of sale) pages is prohibited in our system"

I guess there's no way around that?
