Learning a new traffic source: Pop vs. Push

Hey guys -

I'm really curious about jumping into push more than pop traffic, though I know the standard MO is to go pops.

TLDR: Can I start with push though it's what I'm heavily biased towards, or do I really need to start with pops?
(also jump to bottom of my OP to see more specific questions, and why I'm asking, if you don't want to read the rest)

First a little biz history though...

I'm not brand new noob, to be clear. And in really starting my AM journey I've started on the devil I know from my old business: Facebook ads.

I also have sold Clickbank products here an there to my email list as a very small time affiliate over the years, so I've been a little familiar with that.

My old biz was a high-ticket coaching business and I had a bit of success with it, and did everything from running the ads, making videos, landers (opt-ins) email campaigns, webinars, doing all the consult/sales call...the entire funnel I know pretty well. I even recently was hired by a friend to build out her entire high ticket funnel. I'm decent at tech stuff as a former tech guy, and I like stitching everything together, it's fun. But I had to leave that business model, it wasn't for me any longer.

The truth about my media buying skills on FB, even though I have a bit of FBA experience:

Though I got OK results running FB ads for my business, one thing is abundantly clear coming into AM as a media buyer:

I freakin' SUCK at media buying, bigtime including Facebook. That's OK because I'm here to get good, among other things.

So in starting my AM journey full-time, I have been running in a couple different WH leadgen niches on FB and haven't gotten to break even yet in them.

I was making progress towards one (even though I started in the most expensive time of the year for FB ads), but I'm about ready to shut one niche down especially due to iOS14 messing with the ability to convert on third-party domains with the pixel. It's really a pain and I'm not currently will to flush money just to see what works with this instability.

I do have another AM funnel on FB that I'm going to stick with because it involves email marketing, which I'm reasonably comfortable with compared to straight traffic arbitrage i.e. ad >> lander >> offer without collecting an email.

Time to get a new girlfriend?

Though focus is important, I also think it's time to get a 2nd girlfriend other than FB, who's totally hot but such a crazy chick in so many ways, and sometimes nothing last forever. While I'd love to jump into Native traffic as it's my ultimate goal to learn, it's too risky with the budget requirements at my current noob-ness IMO.

So as a "non-FB traffic noob" I've been looking at pops vs. push and I want to commit fully to making my new 2nd girlfriend happy. She will have to know that I'll still be seeing Facebook though, and be cool with that - gotta be honest right? Who knows maybe my new girlfriend could be my main squeeze...though that native chick seems like the full package deal! You never know though.

(OK weird girlfriend metaphor over, sorry trying to have a bit of fun, been stressing on this a bit.)

Pushing towards Push (I admit I'm biased)

I am heavily drawn to push, because I get the sense it's like training wheels for native ads (saw an Affiliate World panel where Anton Kornev a push guy said it's basically just like native), along with overall having higher quality traffic than pops - which twinaxe has mentioned as well here >>

https://stmforum.com/forum/showthrea...l=1#post407758

I've been reading several FAs on push here on STM, twinaxe's stuff, and wherever I see push vs. pops stuff. Also YouTube videos of anyone that seems legit.

Here's what I've found:

A few concluding questions:

1. Is there any significant downside to not learning pop traffic at all, and just diving right into push?

2. How good/bad of an idea would it be to start on pops, but then move quickly to push...or am I just delaying the inevitable?

3. Should I just ditch FB ads entirely right now to learn a new traffic source like pops/push - or should I stick with it to maintain more focus? (I do have budget to run both FB and another source, currently).

I know myself and human beings, so I'm trying to avoid that cognitive blindness thing, ya know. Meaning when we want something we can be blind to why it my not be the best option.

So any/all insights and feedback are appreciated.

Do both

Since you’re already familiar with FB ads, Push creatives will be a pretty easy concept for you.

I would do pops for one week, just to get some landers under your belt and to get familiar with some traffic source/s see how things work in your tracker, etc.

And then jump right into push, just tack the push creative in front of the existing landers you got from pops. Then you can compare and contrast the difference and see why you like push better.

I like that idea a little mix and match

Definitely agree with @jaybot!

Running pop first will save you money - because pop and push have similarities but pop is cheaper. And they use similar landers too.

So you can use pop to figure out everything except the push creative, then when you transition to push you just need to learn about the extra campaign variable (push creatives).

Nice thanks Amy, good to know that.

Although I did see a thread here where someone said pop isn't necessarily cheap as it seems end of the day (though I'm assuming still cheaper than push though maybe the gap is closed more a bit more) because of traffic loss and bots?
