Bait and Switch: Use the Same URL? (23)

Bait and Switch: Use the Same URL?

Quick question:

I'm setting up 3 campaigns today to test - and I'm doing a bait and switch after they get approved (hopefully) by the FB staff.

Is it cool to use the same root url?

For example, I'm using mydomain.com to redirect to a Perez Hilton post. And then I'd be using mydomain.com/education to redirect to a college scholarship website.

I'd obviously be changing the redirects after approval to send them to the offer page or my own LP.

I just want to know if this is a good idea.

Thanks!

You should be fine. Good luck and keep us posted on your results!

Dude I would never run bait and switch on facebook, that's pretty ghetto, you really need to run a cloaker. Also, be smart about the landing page you use, go find something in the google search results related to the end offer you want to redirect real visitors to but that would be compliant.

If you want to run an EDU offer and it won't be approved by FBook, go find some unknown blog with a post on best scholorships or something that would be considered compliant.

I just searched around on the forums, and it seems like the risk stays the same between cloaking and bait and switch. Do you have any recommendations on a cloaker though?

The pages I'm promoting aren't really sketchy. But they are submits, so I thought it would be more of a hassle getting them approved.

Well there's risk regardless but a cloaker is at least more secure than just swapping out a URL, not saying you can't get away with it, but hey, fbook accounts are not hard to get, so if that's easier for you, go for it. The cloakers I use are built by my programmer, never tested any of the ones that are out there on the open market.

Ah I see man. Well since my budget is limited to about $100 a week (which I want to use solely on adspend until I get a couple of profiting campaigns going) I'm going to stick with the bait and switch

LMAO & calling the bait and switch ghetto - I fuckin' remember back in the day when that shit was G. Yea, you really need to get a cloaker to do it right. I have a pretty badass one that's kept me pretty well protected (I wont use it on my big XX,XXX/day budget accounts though).

Hey man,

I'm guessing your big spend accounts are fully compliant without cloaking or anything then?

Thanks!

I think facebook has only done one sweep for bans on the bait and switch method. I still do a bait and switch

Would Facebook still ban you if you created an ad to the same offer with a landing page and then after you get accepted split test it with direct linking?

i b&s all the time, have done for past 12 months without an issue and thats on $x,xxx accounts too - I guess it depends on how "against the tos" it really is

Do you reckon they take screenshots etc of what you originally submitteed. Say i used an iframe or something on my domain, even the display url would be the same so couldn't we argue that's what we submitted and the reviewer let it through?

That argument doesn't really seem to work with facebook. I have been banned in the past for things that the reviewers let through with no cloaking or bait & switch involved.

I've been using this cloaker (http://affiliateplex.com/tools/facebook-cloaker/) for longer than I can remember and as long as I don't forget to update the IP list, it seems to hold solid for me. I really should just set up a cron job to do that for me, but eh... too much effort.

Looking forward to seeing the prosper mod though polarbacon, I'd prefer to keep everything inside my tracking rather than having to use multiple scripts on multiple servers.

edit: Someone beat me to it. I guess it would have helped if I had noticed the second page before I started posting my reply... haha

Hi,

I am in IM for about 3 years, but 99% SEO traffic, the last few weeks I start to use FB and POF.....and english is not my first language, so be gentle ;-)

I have a question.....what's the difference between cloaking and bait & switch?

06-22-2011 03:11 PM #21 jdrmar (Member)

That name sounds familiar.. you dutch?

I'm sure others could explain it better, but here's a try:

- bait and switch: set one landing page when your ad + landing page are reviewed, then once it gets approved switch it to another landing page (that might not be compliant )
- cloaking: redirect the user/browser to different landing pages, depending on some criteria. For example, you could get a list of IP's and referrers that facebook reviewers use and whenever your cloaking script detects a user from that list redirect to the compliant LP, the rest gets redirected to your real LP

Of course, both of these can pretty easily be detected if facebook puts any effort into (check again at a later time for b&s, use vpn for cloaking)

Hope this helps (send me a pm if it doesn't make sense )
