[READ] Boost your Facebook ads CTR with a ‘Like’ button!

Hey guys, haven't contributed much to the forum since joining, so thought I could quickly show you a simple trick to boost CTR and get cheaper clicks.

We all know there are two types of ads on facebook – ads for pages and ads for external urls.

Ads for pages have a little ‘Like’ button below the ad, and ads for external urls don’t have the button.

An example jacked from my adboard:

Having the ‘Like’ button on your ads is cool because the user will be able to become a fan of your page right from the ad. Why is that cool? Coz ‘likes’ from the ad are considered as clicks – it boosts your ad’s CTR, and you can post updates and bug the user again and again until you’re sure you squeezed him out of his last dollar.

That’s awesome Manu, but we can’t build a fanpage for every offer we push. So what do you suggest? And when I promote stuff that pisses people off, they always come back to my fanpage and say mean things. It hurts my feelings :/

Worry not my friend, it is possible to get like buttons on your external url ads AND yes, if you do that people won’t be able to post hate comments on your wall, report your page or something like that.

How to get a 'Like' button on your facebook ads for external urls:

Want a ‘Like’ button for external url ads? Say helloo to Facebook Open Graph protocol!

Add your lander to Facebook’s open graph and your lander functions the same way a fanpage would, and bam! your ads get a Like button

To add your page to the open graph, add the following code to your header:

Code:
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"
      xmlns:og="http://ogp.me/ns#"
      xmlns:fb="http://www.facebook.com/2008/fbml">
  <head>
    <title>The Rock (1996)</title>
    <meta property="og:title" content="The Rock"/>
    <meta property="og:type" content="movie"/>
    <meta property="og:url" content="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0117500/"/>
    <meta property="og:image" content="http://ia.media-imdb.com/rock.jpg"/>
    <meta property="og:site_name" content="IMDb"/>
    <meta property="fb:admins" content="USER_ID"/>
    <meta property="og:description"
          content="A group of U.S. Marines, under command of
                   a renegade general, take over Alcatraz and
                   threaten San Francisco Bay with biological
                   weapons."/>
  </head>
</html>
Customize the title, type, url, etc and you’re good to go. If you don’t know where to look for your user ID, use this - http://graph.facebook.com/zuck (replace ‘zuck’ with your username). If you still can’t figure it out, go to your profile and hover over your display pic and copy the link address – it will have your user ID. (http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=pa.YOUR_USER_ID).

Use this tool to check if you've done things right.

And oh, the og:type you wanna use would be “website”. I’ve heard this helps in case your page gets over 10k fans…FB doesn’t come looking if you’re listed as a website. Not sure about this though – the STM junkie with the best theory on this wins a free cookie!

More information on the open graph here.

Now go to this page, grab a Like button and put it somewhere on your page. Then go ahead and like your own page.

That’s it! You will find your lander listed here –- also, your page will be in the drop down when you create your ad.

My ads perform a bajillion times better with this technique. Social ads are cool. Get creative with this fellas!!

So in this case do you still get a social ctr on ads as you would with ads for a fan page? Sounds like it...

Could you submit a fake lander for FB to approve and add the link button and then switch the links if your direct linking? Or would the "like" button disappear?

06-11-2011 11:10 PM #4 deondup (Member)

This is a great idea.

I can't get it to work though... When i add the like button to my page I get an error when I try to "like" it

Your og:type object name has disallowed characters in it. It must match [a-z][a-z0-9._]*
No matter what I do with the "og:type" it keeps giving the same error. Even if I leave it out.

Another concern about the "like" button is they may like your page, but wouldn't they not see your offer? and if your not marketing something long term essentially that could be viewed as a wasted click.

06-12-2011 05:39 AM #8 vidivo (Member)

Yeah but is a like considered a click to facebook? And if it is, well at least your ctr will shoot up getting you cheaper clicks then you could get before, thus getting you cheaper traffic and more of it im assuming..

Yes, just as you would with ads for a fanpage

Well, your open graph url is pretty much set - you can't switch urls. You can switch everything on the lander though (you gotta keep the meta tags, etc). If you want the user to see the offer directly, I guess the only way to do it would be Iframes. Hope that answers your question.

Yes, this happens a lot. In some niches, people just click the like button and thats it - they don't go to the lander. I recently had a justin bieber campaign which was getting me 1c clicks and a lot of them, due to very high ad ctr - but only 20% of the total clicks went to the actual lander. Yes I got a lot of fans, but the clicks to my lander cost 5 times more, it was low paying offer I couldn't get it profitable.

But there are niches where 80-90% of the people go to the offer after liking the ad. I always go by the total number of people who visited my lander vs total spend for the day. The fans and wall updates are extra money. Test different niches. Stick to whichever one works for you.

See complete list of supported types here.

Are your meta tags all good? You can get your open graph tags generated easily by scrolling down to "Step 2 - Get Open Graph Tags" on the like plugin page.

I understand the open graph URL part I'm talking about doing a bait and switch like in prosper send the reviewers to the "like" page and switch it to the offer when it's approved and wondering if the user can still "like" the page

06-14-2011 06:17 AM #14 vidivo (Member)

No dont switch it keep the same url that prosper gives you, but instead of direct linking us an LP and iframe the direct link... Simple.

06-14-2011 07:31 AM #15 vidivo (Member)

Actually you dont need that code or anything... For example, I put up a blog post and every blog post I have a like button, well if I like it, it will show up in my create an ad page where I can choose it.. ad preview shows the like button..

So pretty much just add the like button and your set!

edit.

nvm.

07-01-2011 06:34 AM #17 izmb (Member)

well I just did everything and still can't get it to appear as a page.

But for some reason it appears as an application.

Let me get something straight, is this going to allow the ad to go straight to the offer or will it be Ad->FB Page->Offer?

I see that it lets you type your own url in when you are creating the ad this way however if you change the url from the fb page url that is already predefined, it says 'the url is invalid' when you try to submit it.

straight to the offer...

well you're going to iframe an offer or something.

Saw these and thought some people might be able to use them, should they want to use Like buttons in their ads.

http://ryanallen.com/facebook-vector...-send-buttons/

They look pretty high quality so they should reduce and expand fine.

eta: I meant, as in literally put it in their ad. Not on Facebook, but in banners. I didn't know where else to post this, and this thread seemed somewhat relevant.

Question on a slightly different area - If you have an ad for a FB page and someone 'likes' the ad/page without clicking the ad do you get charged (assuming you're on CPC)? If not, dammit that's awesome. and it makes me want to make a FB page for every offer.

thanks man..thats definitively worth a split test..i doubt that i would get that much likes on my ads..but worth a try ;-)

Yes, you pay when someone 'likes' the ad without clicking the ad...likes from the ad are considered as clicks. That's why the 'like' button boosts your ad CTR, coz people are used to liking stuff on facebook..so when they see an attractive/funny image or adcopy they click on the like button.

07-10-2011 08:07 AM #24 manutv (Member)

I've found that about 50% of the clicks showing on my fb campaigns are 'likes' from the ads. Its true that I'm getting only half the people to see my actual lander, but that doesn't matter since ads with the like button get me a CTR 4-5 times higher than the ads without the like button. Better CTR = cheaper clicks. Not all the time, but on most occasions - so its always good to split test.

ah...couldn't be as easy or cool as I wanted. I may do a mini case study to see if FB treats or values one over the other - page vs url.

07-10-2011 08:47 AM #26 dantheman (Member)

@lifetweak - What happened to your 2nd part for your blog post? You need to finish it up

Nice! Bring on the case study I'll look to do one myself in the coming weeks!

Lol I'm not a techie person either! Which parts did you not understand? I'd be happy to help

07-20-2011 01:42 AM #31 vuedoolor (Member)

@ lifetweak so you need a landing page to do this?

08-13-2011 07:59 PM #32 showcasekid (Member)
