Hi all.
I’m trying to get to grips with Facebook at the moment, and found the post by one angry Russian about the process he follows (here) very useful.
I see a lot of game offers advertised on FB, so I thought I’d have a crack at one.
Offer: World of Tanks (18+), UK only
Payout: $2 (double opt-in)
I actually ran some FB traffic to this back in May, and did about $200 in conversions. I don’t know what a good CR is for this type of offer, but it converted about 1 in 6 which I thought seemed ok. At the time though I didn’t turn a profit because I couldn’t get my CTR high enough.
My angle was to target people who were interested in games such as Call of Duty, so I picked the following keywords:
- Call of Duty
- Call of Duty 4
- Modern Warfare Two
I then selected people only in London (+40km surrounding) which narrowed my demo down to about 25,000. The idea being that once I’d narrowed down my top ad, I could rollout across the UK.
I left age targeting broad at 18-54, so I didn’t restrict my reach too much.
Ad copy was “New Game is CoD Killer: Drive Tanks. Shoot Stuff. Over 3 million players on-line. Think you can handle it? Get it FREE TODAY.”
Suggest bids: £0.48 − 0.76 (GBP)
So, I let this run for a few hours yesterday, kicking it off around 2pm UK time, but my problem was that I just wasn’t getting any traffic! I’d started bidding at £0.40, and over time raised my bids to £0.55 (I just wanted some traffic!)
In the end I paused the campaign. My reach had climbed to the giddy heights on 1,487, with a frequency of 24.7. 14 clicks and 0.038 CTR overall, although a couple of ads got a CTR of 1.0+ off the bat (yes, 1.0 not 0.1).
Is the problem that my initial demo was too small at 25k? I was trying to follow the advice from the irate Russian, who suggested segmenting your demos to 10-50k based on geographical area.
That's pretty much how I test my offer as well. I usually test my ads on a demo between 50k-80k so that I can get enough clicks to my high CTR images to reduce my CPC. When you are testing on a small demo, you need to watch your campaign as it goes live and pause images with low CTR. Were you getting any impression while bidding at 0.40? You said you didn't get any traffic so I'm assuming that you were getting impression but not clicks right? Correct me if i'm wrong..
can you tell me which network has this offer?
Games are generally hard to push on FB.
ah crap!
I wrote a whole page on what to do and how you were almost there and when I went to submit it "invalid link. need administrator approval"
oh, well. I guess Ill re-write it and post later with more detail.
OR I could do an ADHD post ?!

Call of Duty , and Modern Warfare keywords may have killed your CTR here you should've targeted the other lesser known but popular online shooters out there which is more similar to the game your promoting.
- With FB, if your bids are too low, do you get ZERO traffic or a small amount of traffic?
In my experience, zero. When that happens, I increase my bids by a few cents until I starting to see some impressions or clicks (on my tracker). New ads usually will get a burst of traffic and then slow down.
- Is there a "best time" to launch any campaign, or does it depend on the niche?
I have Sharp World Clock on my PC, I suggest you get that as well if you're running INT campaigns. I always let my ads run from 9am local time until I get enough clicks to kill ads that have low CTR. My gaming campaigns do really well in the afternoon though (about 3-6pm). Probably that's when the kids are off from school and before their parents are back from work.
- Is there a "rule of thumb" which can be used to say how much traffic you should be getting with a reach of a particular size?
To be honest, I'm trying to get an answer for this as well. I have a campaign with almost 90+% reach and I'm still getting clicks. I think it's about time to get a new set of images in to see how far that campaign can go...
I have a campaign targeting a demo of 400k and after running the campaign for about a week, I only managed to get 3,000 signups. That's like 0.75% of the demo and I think I can do better than this.
I noticed that you're targeting 18-54 with a bid of 0.40. That's a wide age gap and to get any impression for the older demos, you need a higher bid. I'm guessing that the impressions that you have gotten so far are from the younger demos. Which means that a bid of 0.40 is probably only enough to get impressions from the younger age group of your demo you targeted (which explained the low impressions).
What's the demo size for 18-24 (exact age) with the same criteria you set for the previous run?

ok so to start with I took your keywords and went over to google sets....and here is what I got

populære spill
there are a few in there that should def help the reach......
also when bidding.....I know many of you are of the mindset bid low then raise.....
well it works BUT I feel that it can often give you a sub-par burst.....
so alot of times I will put up an ad and bid mid-range to upper range to make sure...my ad isnt getting shown on junk inventory.....
If you ck referers you will see that even on cpc camps you get apps traffic....and I personally feel the lower you place your bid the more apps traffic you get to begin with.....
of course this isn't always the case.....but....the algo has to balance alot of things.....some of your reach's inventory may be real expensive.....yet you would never know that as it shows you only a suggested average......and fb may not even place your ad on that inventory if your bid isn't close.....
Awesome! Thanks Dan. I'd forgotten about Google Sets.

I didn't realize that's how FB worked. I was under the impression that when you bid 'wider' you get discounted clicks across the whole demo at the tradeoff of targeted clicks and potential quality. So you're saying if bid on a wide demo like 18-45 and get a ctr that allows me to lower my bid to the $0.20 level, I could be getting only clicks from the 18-25 population?
Ok, I was naive enough to think I could talk openly on the forum about stuff, but following this thread I've been pulled from promoting the offer.
Thanks to everyone who helped though.
*** END OF FOLLOW ALONG ***
Why would they pull the offer for a thread? Did they say anything else? or was there another reason?
edit: just saw you edited out your images stuff in your first post... did you get pulled for running non ingame images? they're pretty strict on that and will pull you for running non-ingame stuff. Are you sure it's from the forums? maybe they saw the ads and saw your link?
Yes, I would be interested why you got pulled from the offer as well. Is it the network side or advertiser?
Pretty sure he got pulled for using the non in game images to split test his CTR against the in game images.
If you're running one of their offers and say you aren't using in-game images which they require.. Are they just suppose to see that you're using non in-game images and then not do anything even though that's what they specifically don't allow?
I'm not sure they have accounts here since there's been a few posts about them and a thread and no one has said anything.
that sucks. ill comment on the next run.
yes, cpv does work for games and just about anything else that is free or close to it (And many things that ARE not!)
