Installed PPV software but Im not getting any pops? Recommend any spy tool?
Hello
I dont have access to a PPV spy tool. I installed all the major software for PPV (Gamevance, HotBar etc.) on a old laptop of mine. I have been browsing random urls which I know there are bids for the last weeks. Since I live in Europe I using my own US proxy, but still I dont see any pops. I have tried Firefox, IE, Safari and Chrome.
What do you guys do to spy for PPV? Anyone tried Bevo's Spy tool?
Cheers
Durden

Looks like it's going to put Bevo PPV Spy out of business.

According to others all you have to do is ask your TV rep for the toolbar. I guess it's not as big of a secret as they just don't tell you about it.

I downloaded it before he took it down:

I can't get any pop ups still. But others are having success.

You have to browse for a set number of hours before you get pops. I forget how many hours it is, but I just run the software on a virtual machine (VirtualBox for Win7).

yeah I tried installing virtualbox but I can't get it to work. I need a Windows XP installation disc? I tried putting that in but eventually had an error.

If you have an old pc or laptop run it on that. I myself have a vps running windows for seo stuff (scrapebox, xrumer) and Ive setup a special user account on that server whenever I want to do some spying.
If your not in the US, make sure you go through a proxy or VPN so that you have a US IP as well. There are more advertisers for US traffic then for international.
Then go to http://www.google.com/adplanner/static/top1000/ and start going through that list to find high traffic properties where people are advertising,.
Last thing I can suggest is to get hotbar to get LEad Impact pops. It will drive you mad (high volume pops) but its a good way to get a flavour for the pops.

Hey Mugga,
Yes, once you have created your virtual machine in virtualBox you can right click and choose settings. Goto "system" and check your CD/DVD-ROM and move it up to the top. This will boot the virtualBox first
FROM your CD/DVD-ROM (be sure you have a XP CD inserted). Alternatively you can create an .ISO file out of your xp CD and use that as boot medium. Let me know if it worked.

I managed to grab this install before he took it down too. However, it didn't seem to be any better than the working Gamevance install I already had on a virtual machine.
This is what I do, to give me unlimited number of pops on Gamevance:
- I use the Overplay VPN service (www.overplay.net). I'm based in the UK, and I've tried a few proxy services and found this to be the best for the price.
- I installed Windows XP in a Parallels VM (I work on a Mac). I actually had a US proxy running whilst doing the XP install.
- Installed the GV software via a link I got from Jonathan at TrafficVance.
- Pop-a-licious! Pops started working straight away for me. I'd had trouble in the past, using a different VPN service, but as soon as I switched to Overplay... BANG! The pops came. Could be just coincidence.
- Create a snapshot in Parallels. This feature allows you to revert back to a particular point in time on your virtual machine. So, after I've seen a pop, I just revert back to the previous snapshot, and will get another pop immediately. I can keep doing this all day (if I were so inclined...)
And yeah, install Hotbar. Man - there is no shortage of pops with that! Bloody annoying, and I'm surprised Lead Impact actually have any customer base left!

Nice tips, Nick.
Do you by any chance still have the gamevance.exe installer? So everytime you revert back in Parallels, it will popup when you go to another url even?

Here's the link which I got directly from TV (I know it looks like an aff link, but if it is, it's not mine)
http://www.gamevance.com/?lp=389&a=226
Yeah, each time I revert back to the saved snapshot in Parallels and then open IE or Firefox again, I get another GV pop straight away.
I tend to see LOTS of survey landers on high volume sites ("just answer these questions and you can win shit loads of stuff", maybe try our mobile IQ quiz too...).
Haven't tried these yet.

hi all,
I followed everything mentioned in this thread and I still can't see any PPV ads...
My laptop is running Win7 ultimate and I installed virtualbox with winXP. I created a new account at gamevance.com and even followed the link http://www.gamevance.com/?lp=389&a=226 to download a toolbar. I also went to hotbar.com and downloaded its toolbar. Then I visited several high-traffic sites such as facebook, google, flickr etc.
Nothing happened.
questions are:
1) which sites should I visit so that I can test if I'll get pop-ups or not?
2) I use hidemyass as VPN. maybe this is the reason I'm not seeing pop-ups? Nick mentioned he was using another VPN service provider & didn't get pop-ups either...were you using hidemyass before switching to overplay.net Nick?
3) I use firefox. would the pop-ups appear in a new window or in a new tab?
4) what's the equivalent for "parallels" on a windows machine?
any help would be much appreciated!

hi gallox
I tried with IE and I did get some pop-ups...but not a lot as described by Nick...
but in his posts, Nick clearly said he was using firefox and everything was fine...
Nick? any help please?
(Also, how can I tell if a pop-up is from leadimpact or trafficvance?)

TrafficVance has a small blue text in the lower left corner which says "GameVance" or something.

I had exactly the same problems. I would see the text-links (green double-underline under various words on the page, which when you hover over the word, an ad pops up), but never any pops from just visiting the URL.
I used to use StrongVPN and tried for weeks to get ads popping. It wasn't until I switched to Overplay that I started getting pops. And, it was immediate! I would say it was just coincidence, but I have a friend who also struggled getting pops (also using StrongVPN) but once I told them to switch to Overplay, they immediately started getting pops too.
I'd say, give 'em a go. It's $10/month, so not much to risk.
I use Firefox and IE, and pops appear in a new window on both browsers.
I think you can get Parallels for Windows machines.

The snapshot is a good idea. I've heard that all you need to do is go in and adjust your system clock forward a couple hours, and then you will get more pops. Rinse and repeat to get unlimited pops.

It is better to not mix different adwares on the same virtual machine to avoid conflicts
I have one VM for each traffic source and everything goes as expected

Where/how do I download/install this kangobox adware? I've been trying, here at their web site (kangobox.com), but in vain. It just says "see this TV show on a site outside o kangobox" and then i can watch it there. (which is cool in itself). I just want to see LI popup ads.

maybe it's because I'm using Windows 8 Preview ?

Update: Yes, it seems (to me) that it was because I was using Windows 8 Preview. Could not get the kangobox thingy to showup and install.
Tested another PC, with all things the same (IE, proxy ip number from US) except it had Windows 7. It only took a couple of seconds before kangobox.com asked if I wanted to install the adware. Which I did.
Now I see pops regularly. Always nice to be able to take a closer look at the competition. Now I am learning httrack. But that is another story.
