Hosting for Brand Site (10)

Hosting for Brand Site

Need advice on hosting:

I'm setting up two long term, real, brand sites that will be doing high volume PPC (adwords, bing, FB) and organic traffic.

I've always used MediaTemple for my affiliate sites / landing pages, their interface is slick, service good and upgrading is a breeze but their prices seem high.

I wanted to get the group's opinion on the 3 packages below. It looks like Hostgator dedicated gives you more bang for your buck... but Hostgator, from what I've seen has a horrible reputation (or is that just the shared hosting?)

Let me know your thoughts?

Hostgator - $175/mo
Quad Core
2 GB memory
10 TB Bandwidth
500 GB Storage

LiquidWeb - $189/mo
Quad Core
2 GB Memory
6 TB Bandwidth
250 GB Storage

MediaTemple - $150/mo
2 GB Memory
2 TB Bandwidth
100 GB Storage

question is, what do you need? For your average joe's sites, a VPS is plenty.

Im currently running all my landing pages and my regular SEO sites from a single hostgator VPS, and not even top of the bill.

This is only for about 3000 UV / day though, i do not know what kind of traffic you are shooting for

probably a few thousand a day to start but with plans to grow it into higher volume, 10k-50k/ day and beyond over time hopefully.

maybe a better question is: "Can Hostgator handle high volume traffic 10k-20k/day or more?"

My tech guy is recommending them highly but I've just heard so many bad things about Hostgator and affiliates laughing at people on Hostgator, so kind of gives me a bad feeling. Possibly if you're paying for VPS or Dedicated the Hostgator pitfalls aren't as bad?

I would go with something like VPS.net cloud server? The minimum package starts at $20 and you can upgrade the VPS as you grow. Check the slider at the bottom:
http://www.vps.net

I've never used their services, but I have a friend that has grown a blog from zero to 1500 uv per day and he's just upgrading as he sees fit.
I know there are other similar providers.

vps.net is full of s$%t.

Some of my sites were with them an year ago. In 3 months I've got 2 failures and 20 hours downtime, despite that they state that cloud is auto-healing, blah-blah-blah.

Not the case.

Go with hostgator, they have a responsive support team.

Another question if you plan to host sites with CMS/scripting (like Wordpress), or just static pages?

I host some high trafficked landing pages on the cheapest hostgator's shared hosting and use Amazon Cloudfront to deliver images/js/css.

20k a day with no problems. About $35 a month for all the services.

Wow, that sucks. As I said I've never actually used them. The point I tried to make was that with new technologies, there is no need to actually get a Dedicated server paying $100-$400 for a 500 uniques a day site. With this stuff you can just add power as you go. VPS.net, Rackspace cloud, softlayer, storm on demand, whatever.
Again, I've never used it so I might be talking out of my ass here.

I ran a 20k uv a day blog for a lot of time on a small $15 VPS. Just optimized wordpress a bit and I had no problems.

Yeah, another recommendation for BeyondHosting here. Tyler & the team are absolutely awesome. I would stay away from HostGator for anything important, I mostly just use them for stupid SEO sites now.

Hey!

With the requirements of 10-50k a day I would highly recommend our VPS1024, its the most popular with affiliates and allows your room to upgrade to VPS2048 as you need more capacity. Also the addition of litespeed website will almost guarantee 200,000 clicks a day without any click loss.

Thanks for the rec guys.
