How do people track their experiementation?

I was thinking about this yesterday, and with the sheer volume over time of tweaking and tinkering I'm going to have to do I don't trust myself to learn from my mistakes and catalogue it as well as I might like.

Does anyone have an excel template or maybe a couple pics of note book page layouts they have use, that they would be willing to share to get me started/pointed in the right direction

Do you mean like a campaign journal to track what you did to which campaign and when?

(Scroll down to the "Campaign Journal" section.)

What I did was start a blog in 2013 when I switched to paid ads, and wrote down everything i learned in the process.. kept a log publicly to be accountable for it.. who knew 7, soon 8 years later I am still updating that blog and sharing interesting findings from running all kinds of experiments and tests..

i also do a lot in plain old notepad.. and just write there stuff and read back and go off that stuff

When I started, I used to keep a simple doc file and write everything down... what changes I made, why I made them, what was the outcome and so on.

Once I gained some experience, I learned to rely on the data in my tracker, all the important info is there.

What also helps is to introduce some "naming" standard for your ads, campaigns, directories where you store ADs etc... this helps you to easily find when you are looking for something you used a while ago, or when you just look at the overall campaign performance in your tracker.

I can assure you that what looks like a total mess now, will start to make sense as you gain experience
