Adsonar Case Study - MyPcBackup.com

Hi all,
This is a bit late as the study wrapped up about 10 days ago, but I had to leave town and didn't have access to my main PC.

Offer (MyPcBackup.com) . The offer converts on a 3 field submit (Name, Email, Password) and pays out $6.40.

Here are the results:

Ads / Angles
------------

- Went with two angles and 3 ads. The first angle was to push the "free online backup" and direct link to the offer page. The second was to push a "protect yourself from viruses" angle and both direct link and link to a news style lander.

Ad Copy
--------

1. Direct Linked and Sent to lander (rotated)

2. Lander only

Landing Pages
--------------
1. Direct Link

2. Lander (Provided by advertiser)

Targetting
----------

- I targeted Tech based sites as well as news / gossip sites (especially with the lander). The best performing target in terms of CTR and conversions was Fox News Tech Articles.

Bidding Strategy
---------------

- CPC bidding. I bid minimums to start and raised over time to increase traffic. Average bid to start was 0.32 , and towards the end it was 0.60. However for the best performing placement, I had to start at $1.30 and work down to get traffic going (hence the higher average cpc on it).

Conversion rates
-----------------

- Direct link: 0%
- Lander: 4.25% (2 conversions)

CTR rates below:

ROI
----

Spent: $88.26
Revenue: $12.80
ROI: -85%

Conclusions
-------------

Some points of interest:

1. The virus angle got a way better CTR than the Free Backup angle
2. The Fox News Tech audience ate up the virus angle based ad. Might be worth testing on similar sites

Suffice to say, the ROI was going nowhere and my rep pretty much told me it wasn't worth continuing. CPCs are too high if you want decent traffic. There's probably a good reason most people run Weight Loss and Credit offers on adsonar since the payout justifies the ad spend.

That said, there may still be ways to make this work with a lot of tweaking and perhaps lead capture and then selling via autoresponders. But overall I think it's a campaign better suited towards cheaper and more targetted sources - and perhaps sources similar to the fox news tech crowd.

Adsonar is rough man it's kinda like pulse360, a lot of times you need a high testing budget to make it work

I have to agree that ad sonar may not be the best place for this offer....I think to make these work you really need to come at people with a HEAVY fear angle AND with people who are actively looking for a solution....and less of a "pass-by" type thing like ad sonar.....I bet that more of 2nd tier search traffic could rock that offer pretty hard....

i think this offer is from the same advertiser as justhookup and rudefinder. don't they scrub heavily to begin with?

maybe you can try again with a different offer although i have zero experience with adsonar.

Man that landing page really needs to change the call to action button, it says "full out your info to backup" then the button says "signup it's free". Instead it should say "start backup".

Other than that i agree with polar, I'm thinking a lot cheaper traffic would still do well with this offer and the 2nd tier traffic could really blow up the ROI

Yes, second page, it's not just a three field submit. From NBs description:

Registration Of Free Account (2 Page Sign Up Process)

Just jumped back on AdSonar after seeing this, and I have a profitable campaign running now. The selection of quality sites is damn impressive, and some of them you can get dirt cheap clicks (.15 or less). I agree like you said, you need a good payout to make this work. Luckily our fat loss product is up around $65 per average customer now, so I can work with the more expensive clicks

Thanks for the case study!

Very cool man! Weight loss is something I think would work super well on adsonar, so I'm glad to hear that it is already doing well for you
