ECommerce $1,000,000 sales goal follow along

Since I joined STM Forums 2 months ago I've learned a lot.

I got super into Affiliate Marketing the traditional way (thanks to Amy's amazing tutorials) which was a huge step out of my comfort zone. I learned a lot, and I'm hoping to use that learning in a form of digital marketing I'm a bit more familiar with: eCommerce.

My goal is to hit $1,000,000 in sales on Shopify. I work during the day as a software engineer, and I believe that will fund the beginning of my endeavour. I did a niche Shopify store last year just to try things out and was able to bring in $1000 in sales with 0 money spent on advertising... It was super slow though and took a lot of time each day (Think DMing people on instagram all day lol). I'm ready to take the next leap and dive head first.

I'll be working mostly on a general store. I'm going to start testing products with Facebook Ads & Reddit traffic this week. Probably $50/day to start.

I wanted to start this follow along because it will keep me accountable and also if I succeed, it will be able to help others. It was very much inspired by @cawovt.

Oh I also created this (obviously fake) image to help me stay focused and motivated.

I'm a firm believer of visualisation and positive affirmations

All the best! Why dont you also try Google shopping ads along Facebook and Reddit ?

Thank you @sean3! I want to focus on mastering 1 traffic source first before scaling outwards (Facebook). Even Reddit will just be a very very small % of my budget initially - just to test it out.

Definitely, Although can’t call myself as an expert in that field, I do have some tidbits for the community, let me write a short case study on the same soon.

Update on the past week:

So the past week I was sort of feelings things out. I got my store fully set up, I got rid of useless apps that made my page load really slow, and I enhanced some product descriptions a bit more.

I tried to make a promotional video for one of my products... It didn't turn out THAT great :P AND it took me a while to do it. So I figured I might as well leverage Time x Money and hire some freelancers on upwork to do it.

I hired 5 different people to test the waters, and paid them each $10 to make a video for a different product. I quickly found out which freelancers were crazy good, and which ones weren't. I also learned that I had to write the copy for each of the videos - which is not as easy as it sounds.

As a result, I have 5 pretty good product videos to work with.

I think building a Messenger list is really powerful right now, so that's been my goal. I want ~2k Messenger subs by the end of May. (At 0 right now).

I've been trying out some weird strategies.

1. I tried out a plain "Message us" giveaway campaign and split-test across all 5 of the products.

2. I also tried to post something that would make people comment on it - and I have a Manychat bot that would message them when they commented. I tested Video Views, Reach, and Engagement objectives to see which one would get me the most comments...

I also tried running both of these in USA & in tier 3 geos.

Turns out I may be doing things really wrong - I got 0 subscribers in around $20 of testing. ($10 for method #1 and $10 for method #2 above)... Got a couple of reactions, but that was about it. I didn't realize Facebook counted 'video clicks' as an engagement.

Does anyone know what a good CPA for a Messenger sub is? I would have thought $1 - $0.25 per.

I'm going to re-try my strategies with different creatives and more of a variety of headlines.

I feel like once I have the Messenger list, it will allow me to test to see if I have a winning product faster (i.e if 50% of the list clicks on a product I sent out, it's probably a winner) and I can then pay someone to make a video and start advertising it the traditional way. Sorta a way to save money in the long run. (And make some sales while I'm at it)

Interesting!

You got videos made for $10?? I'm impressed! Did you have to provide all the images along with the text and they just put everything together? Or what other extra work did they do to create the video?

Because if all they did was put ad text on images and show them one after the other, with background music, I know simple tools that can do that for you.

If not, then I need to test your method of finding these people. Would you mind divulging where you found them from? (A particular freelancing site?)

As for FB messenger - can't agree with you more. Have you seen this epic thread by Dim Niko?

Hey Amy! Thanks for the response.

I pretty much told them how long the video would be, and provided some source material of the product from YouTube that other people made. Here is one of the videos they made (sharing because my outro isn’t in the video so it’s anonymous ) https://streamable.com/9l0fj

For the $10 thing I hired them from Upwork. I got a lot of responses for the job. The only caveat is you have to write the video copy for them - which isn’t a big deal.

Also thank you for sharing that link by Niko!! That was actually the post that got me interested in Messenger lists. I’ve been trying the giveaway angle but Im still working in perfecting getting people to engage with the posts.

That video is nice - makes me want to buy the product (the "helps you manage your time" angle got me). Thanks so much for the tips! Very useful.

FYI the tool I was talking about before is Adobe Spark: https://spark.adobe.com/

It's very intuitive to use. You can add compile images and/or video clips, add captions, and boom you're done! More than good enough for quick initial product testing.

Mind sharing the text you're using in the ad? (Excluding any private info of course.)

I didn't really do any testing yet but essentially the ad looked like this:

Name:	Screenshot_1.jpg
Views:	70
Size:	38.1 KB
ID:	21300
(Copy is not the best, etc). I'm wondering if in general it's the right strategy? I also tried a comment baiting post + Manychat auto comment replies but Manychat is a bit inconsistent.

Ah OK - I think I know why you didn't get very good results.

The lock in your ad looks interesting, but when I looked at it here's what went through my head:

"What am I supposed to do with it? Learn how to pick locks?"

"Or maybe it's actually a lock I could use to lock things up? But wouldn't that make it easy for people to pick it?"

The biggest suggestion I can give: The prize needs to be something people really want and can use. Just because you're offering to give out something for free, doesn't automatically mean people will bite - having to sign up for a contest involves investment of time as well.

Secondly: Of course, the angle you're using to make the product desirable is important as well.

Try this: Take your best-converting ad for your best-selling product, and "convert" that into an ad for the contest.

And emphasize that entering the contest will take 2 taps / 2 seconds.

Lastly: Giving people a reason why you're running the contest may be good too.

I'm curious on how you were comment-baiting? FB doesn't like that though. Or were you just posting on the page and not running that as an ad?

Wow! This is great advice. I don't quite have a bestseller yet, but I have a lot of ideas that I wanna implement thanks to your post. Also, here's what one of the comment posts looks like... I got around 1 comment per $3. Click image for larger version.

I'm wondering if I should do general facebook ad techniques to get a couple of sales first, then move to this stuff. (i.e test diff audiences with link clicks and do lookalikes / retargetting).

Oh I also forgot to mention - I usually learn the quickest when I can watch someone do it and ask them questions and learn from them.... so I’m thinking of hiring a digital marketing expert to walk me though how they set up camps, write the copy, etc. and learning from them.

I’m just a bit weary of hiring someone from upwork for that - I want someone who is really good!
