Road To A Successful eCommerce
Hello and welcome to my follow along!
I'll be running Facebook (duh, this is in the Facebook section :P) to my eCommerce store to sell my products. I've been working on this store for a year now and have ended the year with a loss. I was profitable in the early stages (beginners luck) but as I tried to scale the profit disappeared.
I joined this forum last week and I wish I joined a year ago. A lot of mistakes I had could have been easily solved by reading a few threads. Oh well, better late than never.
I set up a few campaigns following the structure from here:
As well as trying a few things from here:
And finally, will be trying the scaling strategy from here:
Over the course of last week, I've set up multiple campaigns that failed and didn't provide any ROI / Profit. The most recent on I set up looks good so far and will duplicate some ad sets and increase budget while killing the non-profitable ad sets/campaigns.
The campaigns for this product:
Attachment 19291
Inside 1% LAL:
Inside 3% LAL:
Attachment 19292

Won't show a screenshot for 5% LAL as there haven't been any revenue from it. The plan is to increase the kill the non-profitable campaigns and ad sets, increase the budget for the low ROI ones by 20%, and duplicate + 2x the high ROI ones at midget (5 hours from now).
I'm thinking of changing the age range to 55+ when I duplicate the ad sets because looking at this campaign, that's the profitable age range.
Exciting to see how far I can take this and to learn more from the bumps in the road ahead.
EDIT: Forgot to share the ads inside the ad sets, it's the same ad but duplicated 3 times. So there's a total of 4 ads per ad set. For the ones that are staying alive, I'll be keeping only the best performing ad set.

Nice follow along! I just left some suggestions on your intro thread - leaving a comment on this thread too so I'll be alerted to future updates.
The LAL - are they based on your customer lists?
I'm not an expert on FB just yet, but the higher the percentage the less targeted the LAL becomes, so you may want to start with 1% LAL, and if that ends up in loss, then higher percentages would likely result in even more loss.
The age group though is a useful discovery! You can certainly just target that age group and test more ads to see if you could reach profits there first since it's the lowest hanging fruit.
Looking forward to learning from your follow along! Please be patient though in waiting for feedback - most of us moderators and veteran members are at AWE right now. You will see more action on the forums next week when the conference is over.

Thanks again for the suggestions in my other thread Vortex, much appreciated.
Yup, the LAL is based on my customer list. It's around 1700~ customers that I've collected over the year from generating traffic via other methods + PPC.
That makes sense, I underestimated the difference in 1% to 5%. I forgot that when you're dealing with big data like Facebook, even small percentages will cause a big change. :P
Exactly what I was thinking when I saw that age group in the data. I created the new ad sets to target only that group now. And I hope everyone at AWE is having a blast. I'll still be here afterwards.
PS: Found your Ecommerce Evolved Thread. Excited to go through it today.

Following Vortex's post in the eCommerce Evolve Chapter 1 thread, I've created a landing page for a product.
I quickly purchased a domain, designed the website on WordPress, created a static version, and uploaded the files to a server. Added my Facebook Pixel to it and set up some event tracking in Google Tag Manager. I used Shopify built in pre-fill cart and created buttons to load the cart based on which button they clicked.
So it looks like this: Facebook Ads -> LP -> Checkout with product
I made sure to minimize any actions that'll stray the visitor away from buying the product.
My conversion rate so far in the month is 1.78%, let's see how this will improve it.
Regarding the new ad sets that I created yesterday:
One new ad set is giving me a 200%~ ROI but the rest haven't converted yet. Will be waiting another day or so before going through the ad sets to kill or scale.

Update - July 19, 2018
The new lander seems to be doing good, but that's only the first day. Going to have to see how it'll perform and work on it daily and track performance that way.
I'm happy to finally have a profitable day though.
Spent: $17.71
Revenue: $66.97
Profit: $49.26
Conversion Rate: 4.76%

Update - July 24, 2018
All the previous landers and campaigns went into negative ROI and I killed them.
Buuuuuut that means I have a chance to create new creatives and test new landers.
I've purchased a ClickFunnel account to create a proper sales funnel and got a lifetime access to a tracker so I can track my campaigns and change my landers WITHOUT changing my creatives (keeping those sweet sweet engagements). I thought I might as well purchase eCommerce Evolved since I was very interested in reading it based on Vortex's post.
I created a PPE campaign to help boost the engagement and a WC (purchase) campaign as well. Will be testing the lander on this new product with 1 upsell for my best seller and 1 downsell for my second best seller.
Let's keep moving forward!

Aw! Do you have any idea what happened?
FB can be unpredictable these days. If you have another FB ad account, try launching similar ads there to see if you get the performance back.
Very interesting to see you test new stuff and finding some success!

When i first started off and had no idea what even ripping and fixing up landers were i used clickfunnels. Really great product for product owners.
The only thing i wished was if you had a option to self host....
But overall good job on your hustle. Do not stop!

I've been looking around and I think that Facebook couldn't find enough conversions that fit for my daily budget, but tbh, I have no idea what happened.
Can I do that by creating another ad account with my business manager or does it have to be a new Facebook account?

Haha, I'm the opposite I guess. I can rip and fix a lander as I was a web developer and designer before. I like how ClickFunnels handle all the grunt work and connecting APIs. No need for me to re-invent the wheel. Really do agree that it's great for product owners or anyone who doesn't have a technical background! :P
Thanks for checking in with my follow along. Won't stop the hustle even after I hit the green.

Oh so you were optimizing for conversions?
That's rarely a good idea when testing a product. Try running a traffic campaign and optimizing for link clicks.
Another ad account with the same business manager would be a start, but if you have access to other accounts you can try that too. Basically the more unconnected accounts you have at your disposal the better. (But being a mod I can't openly condone BH practices - so not at liberty to talk too much about that. Hopefully you get the idea though!)

Yup, that campaign was set for optimizing for conversions, specifically the purchase conversion. It was the way I learned from reading around everywhere prior to joining here. Will set up a traffic campaign to help me with testing the landing page.
Hmm, I see what you mean. I do have another Facebook account for persona work but I'll see if I can set up another CC with it. Weird how Facebook works like that lol.

Update - July 29, 2018
I've been playing around with ClickFunnels and I've ended up with 1 funnel that has started to trickle in sales.
The funnel is for the best selling product in my store, with an order bump for another popular item, and upsell for membership (recurring income). There have been two conversions on this funnel already, one for the product, and one for the product + the membership.
Currently, have 2 people that are paying a monthly fee for membership.
Here are the stats from the funnel:

I found the photo confusing even without the names crossed out, but I'll try my best to explain it.
- The first row is the squeeze page
- The second row is the checkout page + order bump
- The third row is the upsell for monthly membership
- The fourth row is the thank you page
Next step is to keep throwing traffic at this funnel and optimize it so that the conversion can keep happening. I'm back on a schedule for creating and releasing new products so that I can make use of my email lists.
Will be creating Facebook ads for traffic (views) based on what Vortex said.

Sounds great! And nice stats that can get even better after more testing and optimization!
Very nice progress for sure!
