Too MUCH Volume
Hey there guys,
I have a HUGE problem. I am buying a LOT of pops and my server is crashing the whole time.
Been with liquidweb server:
8GB RAMN
QuadCore
1GIG bandwith
( Regarding my techs and the support, Apache and Mysql is optimized )
Switched to Rackspace Cloud now and the problem remains.
Using nearly the best hardware what they have to offer. Tracking tool is CPVLab.
I do have 30mb+/sec. Upload!!! My techs say this is a TON and thats what causing the server to melt down every time.
Do you guys know of a setup that can handle this high amount of traffic?
Would really help a lot.
- Hendrik

Dedicated servers with load balancing. Have you optimized your pop-ups to be as small as possible? I have had some experience in setting up infrastructures to handle large amounts of data so feel free to pm me.
If you plan this volume to continue and grow than I would recommend working directly with Rackspace and they should be able to have their network engineers create an architecture that will handle your needs.

Most probably it's not the hardware but the software.
I have pushed 2 mill pops / day with no problems with a similar server to yours and during the tests it showed it can handle up to 37 mill pops / day.
I would suggest switching apache with nginx and tuning msyql.
Also have a look at this thread : http://stmforum.com/forum/showthread...ll=1#post33953
Maybe CPVLab is your bottleneck?

Hey Hendrik, what sort of click volume and which software are you using? CPvlab or 202/custom?

Hey bacon, gaaaaaaaaaaah! Just switched everything to them... Probably gonna have to switch if they are that bad!
Bbrock, thanks for your answer, we are pushing 5 million pops / day. ( with Audio ). Were you able to test CPVLab now with more volume? We actually think its CPVLab too...
Yo Tyler, we are using CPVLab. What do you mean with click volume?

You got the info I was looking for. Is your existing server failing to redirect after it ramps up or what symptoms are you having?
Keep in mind refreshing the admin interface constantly is going to create huge load on your server.

was just going to go ahead with cpvlab... seems like they are having some problems in the recent version
@bbrock32, you only use prosper? even for ppv campaigns?

maybe you should use seperate servers for your tracking and lps...but i would recommend to get in touch with tyler with more details about your needs etc.....i'm pretty sure he can setup a hosting environment that will fit your needs...i hope you can solve that asap.. as i know it's frustrating to loose money/impressions if the volume kicks in that hard..just because your server setup is lacking perfomance

5,000,000 pops a day at a minimum PPV rate of $0.015 comes out to $75,000/day in ad spend.
Holy shit you're my new inspiration.

You can buy pop-under traffic from ad networks and it's a lot cheaper, usually $1-5 CPM

I was about to ask the same question "allthegold" asked...
at $5 cpm, a volume of 5 millions means $25000;
at $1 cpm, that means spending $5000...per day!
so i guess bbrock32 has been laughing all the way to the bank everyday...wow!

We are working on an in-house tracking platform but in the meantime we'd like to continue pushing volume without having our servers crash every few days.
Tyler can you PM me your number? It'd be great if we could talk tomorrow.

No, because generally just tweaking Nginx / MySQL and using a CDN has solved the problem and pages were loading under 300ms.

Feel free to hit me up we've dealt with this issue a lot in the past. Most of it can be remedied by moving all static content off of the server and to a CDN and then removing any database heavy tracking like tracking 202.

^^ this is the answer. move all your content to a CDN, images, scripts, css, audio, everything. remove all tracking code and track using subids at the affiliate network or track via the ppv interface if they allow you to place a pixel.
everyone goes through the same problem when you hit that volume, and it's always the same solution.

Personally I'd find out what the bottleneck is, mysql or web. You should be able to handle the hits yourself and track things.
It might mean a few webservers, I know when we were running openx, I scaled to a 2nd machine and that helped things out alot.

Btw, i'd love to have your problem, where I buy too much traffic that it melts my server.
