Entering into Shopify journey

Hi all,

We've been thinking about trying Shopify for a while now, and yesterday was officially first day of our journey. After reading eCommerce cookbook, we made a list of 20 hobbies/interest where we might find our go to product. After day and a half of analyzing we cut our list to only few interests which had lot's of product and demand for them as well.
After brainstorming session we choose our first product. It's in the gardening niche - bonsai tree seedsFound it on Alibaba, at price of $2.5, competitors price are at $5.9, so I guess that's the price we are aiming for. We were thinking of creating store with only those seeds for bonsai but different variations of it.

Of course, while we were doing this, we found some questions unanswered so I guess this is the best place & time to ask them

1. Should our store have more products or only one? (more different products, not more variations of one product)
2. In case we have more products when creating an ad, should we advertise one product only? If so, should we create different ads for products, and then focus on the best working one?

Primary goal right know is to get to know with facebook ads interface, learn which variables are more important then others and how to optimize them, so we're not hopping to have some conversions right of the bat, but with your help I hope we can achieve that pretty soon
We're from mobile advertising sphere and don't have a clue about facebook ads, so some questions may sound strange, so please don't mind

Plan for tomorrow:
1. Start building our shop
- create name, logo and choose theme
- import products
- install all needed plugins

Thanks in advance

First of all - thanks for posting this. There's always a lot to learn for everyone.

As for your niche, I am not sure a product with such a small margin would be my first choice.

As for the product itself, I have bought one when I was young and interested in everything from ninjas to bonsai. Very disappointed when I could not get it to become more than a seedling.
I was a noob, because when I learned more, it became painfully obvious there are no bonsai seeds. Many trees get "trained", as it takes years to get anything decent to work with.

Why all of this info?

Your market will be noobs like I was (with this product), not the people who are really into it.

Nothing wrong with that, but just don't think it will be people who are into bonsai that will buy this.

Having said that, bonsai supplies etc could be a niche. But things like scissors do tend to last a long time, so not sure about repeat purchases.
Pots can break or are heavy, so not exactly het easiest I think. However, it's not a product category that's currently served by shops, unless specialised, of which there are very few.

Anyway, just some thoughts here that can hopefully help.

Good luck.

Thanks for reply pekadis, guess you saved us some $$$ Luckily we researched every niche on our list so I guess we could find new products easily. I'm on my way to our office so will post an update as soon as we move from where are we now.

EDIT:

Okay, we browsed trough our list, found some products, compared some prices with amazon prices, and leave only those where our margin would be decent, in our opinion.
Our list is following
Air Sofa
Solar Bulb
Military Backpack
Portable air compressor
Softbottle
Headnet
Rice Cooker
Coffee Pot
Headlamp
Magnesium fire starter
Toothpaste Dispenser

Interesting thing we noticed is that every product beside last one, is related to outdoor activities, although we came to them by researching other hobbies/interests. So based on that I guess we'll create some kind of outdoor shop whit all those products.

Looking forward to hear your opinion on this, so we can proceed

Selection of products looks good to me and for the summer holidays, people will be looking for this.

Let us know how you get on with all of this.

Best of luck!

Quick update:

We still didn't finish our store but we are making progress.

This is what we did so far:

1. Choose theme, created logo and name
2. Created ad account, facebook & instagram page
3. Installed apps recommended by Charles Ngo (https://charlesngo.com/best-shopify-...mmerce-stores/)
4. Came up with unique descriptions for our products. Based on what I've conclude from cookbook, description is really important as it sells product as well, so we really made and effort on this one.
5. Wrote and about us page. What we have noticed on other stores which are doing good is that they all have unique and authoritative about us page so we wrote it in that manner too.
6. Found pictures for our products which are yet to be Photoshoped.
7. Wrote reviews on our products

Next steps:
1. Import variations of our products (expensive ones - premium, and the cheaper ones)
2. Photoshop images we found according to cookbook.
3. Determine prices for our products. So far we just made a rough estimation on wheter we'll be able to make it work on avg. price on Amazon, exact price is yet to be decided. We read some articles on the prices, so I think it will be interesting, and we'll make a good work out of it.
4. Come up with angles for ads & lead magnet for collecting e-mails. E-mail sequences as well.

Questions that came up to our minds so far:
Should we create our ads separately for each product, or advertise only shop as a whole?

Hopefully we'll finish everything tomorrow so we can share our store on Reddit, STM and some more places for feedbacks and start launching campaigns

Once again, thanks for you feedback

ANOTHER QUESTION: What should be my lead magnet? I was thinking about "Get 20% off on any product and be the first one to know about sales and new arrivals"

@walkfasttalkslow not exactly. Due to bad copy (grammar) my first ad was really bad. Had 0 sales. I'm waiting for revision to be done for the second attempt.
@cmdeal Facebook. So far still trying to figure out should I target narrow or broad

Note that this is my old account and I don't have access to it anymore. This is my new account and next chapter of this follow along - https://stmforum.com/forum/showthrea...e-follow-along
