Site Scout Case Study..Downloads

Ok so this is a really basic case study for those starting out getting their feet wet in media buying....

I think you should see the good and bad camps...and everything else in between....and this camp falls in the "in-between" area....not everything you do in IM works....but what you can do is maybe take some ideas from this get something similar going.....

The camp was basicly a small test of an idea I had....sitescout off and on has had alot of cheap anime site traffic....like sub 50c CPM's and I was trying to come up with a way to montize it....here is the basic camp....

offer was http://www.getdislike.com/

here was the creative I tested....I just kept it simple it was more of a "test of concept"....

normally i would have tested more creatives....but this was a quick test to see what sites might work well and where the CTR would be.....then go back and see what I could do on a site level to make it work even better....so my advice would be to start with at least 3 creatives all dif.....but at the time I knew this template was working so I just was lazy and ran with that....

ok here are the stats....

So as you can see there was some promise there....anytime you start a camp and its break even its a good day in my book.....

so your next question is what didn't i follow up on this as it showed promise?

Well the offer got really unstable like it was up and down...not conversion wise....but more of paused...then unpaused.....actually for this test I got screwed on a few leads cuz the offer went down for part of this test.....

also those "style" of banners got some serious hate from the adnetworks in the following week...so It got hard to get stuff approved....near impossible.....

so what can you learn form this?

well hopefully your taking something from the banner design...and not copy it but use similar tactics.....for instance buttons that people are familiar with...can work wonders to improve CTR....and if you match them with the site your on you can skyrocket your CTR...of course if the site allows it......

also instead of going thru sitescout when they started having issues with the banner I could have contacted the site owner directly and prob got the traffic dirt cheap and had no issue with creatives....I didn't do this mainly cuz that offer was up and down like crazy and I felt I could be chasing down this site owner for nothing....

anyways as you can see with display there are lots of options.....your not limited sometimes by what ad networks say and do....its all about how far you want to take it...

hopefully this sparks some thoughts in your heads and helps you understand how to get started doing some simple small buy's.....

awesome! and wicked CTR! it's a bummer the offer didn't convert better than it did.

Maybe try one of those cartoon offers on that anime site like Stackmans Vampire campaign, except just adapt it to "turn yourself into an anime character"

That's actually our offer, interesting case study, if you want some tips on how and where to run it, I'll be publishing some video case studies for our publishers in the next week or so, will upload here as well. CPV has been really solid for me, of course you need to "sneak" it through to get it live as with any download offer but there are a few tricks for that.

Download offers are heavily frauded, you probably ran it unfortunately when we had a few networks illegally brokering it to unauthorized networks or perhaps one of the networks that we did set a lead cap with to check quality. Anyway, thanks for testing it, was cool to see it up here.

good idea. for the noobs out there, split testing ideas/offers on the traffic you are buying is the name of the game. once I started doing that my success rate on finding profitable campaigns went way up. you just never know what your audience likes until you put it in front of them and test it

where did you find that offer btw? never seen it on any networks before edit: oh I see lol

Awesome, please do share some case studies. This is definitely an offer that has lots of potential.

Can we have tutorial about how to make high ctr banners for media buy?
I really need to get my photoshop skill improved.

Awesome case study Polar! The banner seems a little disconnected from the offer but this has massive potential for sure. Maybe that's why the CVR was low?

If you havent seen them yet start with some of the great posts done before about high ctr creatives by Jordan and Polarbacon. Most of those lessons would apply to mediabuys as much as they do to facebook.

Heres a useful page i started:

Hi Polarbacon, thank you for the excellent article. I could not follow the statement ….for instance buttons that people are familiar with...can work wonders to improve CTR....and if you match them with the site your on you can skyrocket your CTR...of course if the site allows it..

Could you please Clarify and possibly with an example of a banner?
Many thanks

Hey buddy,

It's pretty self explanatory. An example of this would be a lot of those facebook style banners you see around these days - you know the ones, thin blue border up the top with a heading in white Arial Black font. The rest of the banner is white with a picture of a small picture of a girl just like the facebook friends images, and a green or blue button to the side that says "Let's Chat!"

He does have examples of these on the Webinars, but if you go trolling on the net for a while you'll find those everywhere.

EDIT: Damn... I really gotta read the first page of these thread sometimes... that's the perfect example right there.

This is a style I have run in the past

That is an ad you have run in the past? You didn't add any call to action? How did it perform?

Newb question to sitescout / media buy.... Please don't hurt me!!!

Where do you host the banners? Do you use a their ad server, someone elses, or your own?

11-18-2011 06:26 AM #16 polishedturd (Member)

Their server - you just upload your banners to their platform. You can upload a zip file which makes it really quick and easy to send a whole bunch in one go.
