Lessons From Top Keywords On Lead Impact
Taking into account this post, I am amending this case study to make sure I dont oust anyone's campaign.
This casestudy will basically share with you the common characteristics of campaigns that are targeting top keywords on Lead Impact.
So no url targets, just keywords.
Method
I used the following approach to select the keywords for this casestudy:
- Google adwords keyword tool as source for the keywords
- Set keyword filter to US & high competition
- Take top 50 keywords in each category (by Local search volume)
- Add those to the adwords traffic estimator tool
- Sort by daily spend descending
- Take top 200
This gives me a good list of keywords that get lots of volume on google, are very competitive, and expensive.
Next i created variations of that list by replacing the spaces with the following characters
*
+
-
_
and also the nospace variation.
This gave me about 800 keywords in Leadimpact.
Next i selected in Lead Impact all keywords:
- With a rank of 2 or higher on lowest bid
- Make my bid highest and select all keywords with spend > 0.015
Those will be the keywords I will spy on - 106 keywords in total.
Heres the top 10:
Code:
payday*loan
credit*score
creditreport
paydayloan
paydayloans
payday*loans
creditscore
freecreditreport
credit*report
payday-loans
The full list is attached below:
Spy list.txt
Next step
As I said - i wont show any actual campaigns. What im gonna do is highlight things that are consistent across these campaigns so you can look at adopting some of these lessons in your own.
Hopefully ill post the update today. Gotta go and get some shopping done first though!

What does this cover? People mistakenly typing in weird characters accidentally, or does it have some other purpose?
Looking forward to the update

Leadimpact replaces * with any character, so if your biding "keyword*phrase" if will pop on any of the following:
keyword phrase
keyword+phrase
keyword-phrase
its single character match only though. so not a true wildcard.
+, - and _ are common characters used by search engines and apps like wordpress to replace spaces.

Awesome thanks
I kind of figured the * was some kind of wild card, haven't used LI a huge amount yet, so this is good to know.
And apologies if it's super obvious but I also must ask: if the * is a single char match for any char, why add the
keyword+phrase
keyword-phrase
keyword_phrase
lines manually as well? Wouldn't the * cover all these instances?
thanks again man

Thanks for idea.
"Make my bid highest and select all keywords with spend > 0.015"
Why don't you take keywords with spend = 0.015?

The idea is to find the TOP keywords.

If you make your bid the highest for all targets, and you're bid is still = 0.015, then that must mean that you're the ONLY bidder, so not competetive or expensive.

On LI i am unable to export the kws if they are pending approval and the csv comes up empty. I exported on some of my existing campaigns and it works. Anyone else run into this issue?

Yes that's how their system works. It will export only approved keywords.

so when not bidding for a phrase but a single word url, can you also add *? For example would ama*zon.com pop on amazon.com? Wold ama*on.com?
