How To Track 2nd Tier PPC Traffic Sources

seems like 2nd tier ppc traffic sources are 90% garbage/bot traffic but there is still gold in most of em, 7search,finditquick,advertise, etc. Some also have options to track traffic sources and block out certain non performing ids, I was wondering how you would test the traffic sources for quality. I thought you could just run an easy action to see where the real people are coming from (eg email/zip submit), also maybe google analytics can tell how long they stay on your page and stuff, then there was cpv labs and tracking 202 where you put domain.com/kw=money&sourceid=8984 or something, also how would be do this through a landing page flog to a cpa offer, what would be the best way? anybody have any other input on this? thanks

I track all of my traffic sources using Stat Counter.com

"They say the best things in life are free"

-whoever said that wasn't kidding.

Here is how I track the gold in 7search / msn content network etc. etc.

I place a stat counter tracking pixel on a "thank you page"

I have my visitors do an action,

and then I look at the visitor paths that led the visitor too my thank you page to determine the quality of the source:

Also I have excluded baddie sites this way.

I have one site in msn content network that is GOLD. I'm talking like 2000% Roi, for example today I made $220 spending $1 - $2.

So to recap:

To test good traffic sources:

If CPA then direct people to your own thank you page where the pixel is,

then go back and look at what site or keyword the visitor came from to get to your thank you page which = GOLDD.

Make sense?

If CPA then direct people to your own thank you page where the pixel is,
Sorry if this is a dumb question;

I'm not following this how could you have your own thank you page for a cpa offer?
Why not just ask the network to place your statcounter pixel?

If you are doing lead generation sometimes you can capture the lead information and then send it to the advertiser.

Makes tracking easier and increases conversion (opt in) rate dramatically which =

alot more $$$$

I just stated a campaign in 7 search, as I've heard both good and bad. I am still learning (PPC and tracking), so I thought it would be a cheap way to learn. I am tracking with prosper 202 with the LP CTR Mod, so I can track what sites are getting the clicks. It is interesting I got 36 clicks from a site that when I go to the site I get a 404.

I have been running a lot of traffic through both 7search and Looksmart lately, using Prosper for tracking.

Here's what I've found:

1) There are mostly real searches and real clicks. The conversions rates are generally below those of AdWords/MSN. But then again, the Big G doesn't let you run direct-link campaigns to most CPA landing pages.

2) With both 7search and Looksmart you MUST ask them to enable campaign-level referrer and subid blocking (more on this below).

3) Prosper is showing the referrer (URL) for each click. Once you accumulate enough clicks, you can begin to block under-performing referrers.

4) For 7search and Prosper, you want to assign your subid to the tag ###KEYWORD### for tracking. You also want to assign the c1 tag to ###AFFID###-###RID###. This looks a bit odd, but is the 7search publisher and their affiliate. In most cases with 7search, you don't want to block at the ###AFFID### level. But one of their affiliates might be sending clicks that don't perform.

5) For Looksmart and Prosper, you want to assign your subid to the tag {keyword:default}. Then I recommend assigning c1 to the tag {feed}. This is equivalent the 7search AFFID/RID combination.

The other thing I like about Looksmart is that you can pass through lots of location tags, like {state}, {city}, and {postal_code} to see where your campaigns are working or not working. You can also use this tags in your ads like "Turned Down For Health Insurance in {State:Your State}?"
