How To Set Up a and Run a CDN....**UPDATED**

I did a similar post a while back.....and I still see questions about it in the forums some I thought I would make a very basic tutorial about it.....

The video is long and its very basic.....but I wanted to explain what a CDN is an how to set one up step by step.....

ok updates

did some testing since a little rat I know was doubting so here you go...

page I tested 60kb approx

testing

from my server

from CDN

as you can see in the tests much fewer timeouts.....and much much faster average times being more than 2x faster

mind you this is one very easy way of setting one up.....there are others but I like simple....

post any questions here you may have.....

and of course thanks are always welcome in the enchanted forest

for starter, why you need a CDN in place ? at what kind of volume, you suggest a CDN ?

well i think its good to use anytime you do anything int wise....esp if your server is in the usa and you are advertising in Europe....

also if you plan to run any kinda high volume camps via ppv....like lets say your gonna bid on craigslist.org or other high vol targets similar...

or if your are gonna run a heavy page 200kb +

definitively i always use amazons cloudfront for foreign campaigns to make sure that the lp's load quickly and reliable...it doesn't cost much so it's definitively worth to do it

I move the whole vps to europe, still manage to get profitable campaign in US...sure CDN will come into play in the future when needed one

nope amazon is fine as long as its their CDN product and not just their S3.....only reason I showed this is cuz its very easy (maxcdn) .....also amazon works with buckets and I find it harder to set up and use......

I just started using Amazon Cloudfront as a CDN. It's ok but i does not have the usefull purge function. So you have to add version names to your files (to make sure the amazon edge fetches the content from the origin server) or use the cache-control http header.

Props to polarbacon and his glitter mane. We now analyze our websites to ensure the most minimum footprint. Streamlining, Java, CSS and Images plus using MaxCDN, we have reduced load times exponentially! Using Pingdom Tools: Example 1 - 6.7 > 1.6 seconds. Example 2 - 3.5 > 1.1 seconds. Huge! The bigger killer is the latency as the servers talk and decide what's gonna happen next. Get ya a CDN. Smoke the competition.

The testing server could have just been further away from your liquidweb machine than the CDN host node. We've found in several test hosting the content locally is better than a cheap CDN.

Polar hit me up on aim: visbits, I want to run some of these test with one of our setups to see how it goes. You got me all curious now :-)

Thanks, @polarbacon! Great tutorial.

I have a question. I am planning to run massive mobile traffic to static landing pages.
What is the best configuration in this case?
I am using simple HostGator hosting now. Is it enough to use CDN with it?
Do I need to have in addition to CDN the dedicated server or VPS/VDS?

Should my lp url be "m.mydomain.com/lp1.html" or "mydomain.com/lp1.html" is ok?

Thanks

I was just reading through this thread and went to MaxCDN's site to check out their pricing. I've been thinking about trying it out to see what it does for performance and ROI.

For the month of August MaxCDN is running a special where you get your first TB for free if you sign up. Then you can buy more bandwidth as you need it. Just thought I'd share in case there were others, like me, who were on the fence about trying out a CDN to see if it's worth the extra expense. I'm definitely gonna check it out now since I can test it for free.

If you use Rackspace's file cloud service, they made an agreement with akamai and you can place your content on their CDN (akamai has by far the fastest and most vast network, they are everywhere) for $0.18 / GB. Probably not worth it unless you're running TONS of traffic or if you are running traffic in countries where MaxCDN doesn't have any servers.

Did any of you try it? Care to post results and/or observations?

hey maxcdn has a special offer for august, going to expire in a few hours but they have a free 1 TB special. check them out, but the question i had more relating to this thread is to polar or anybody else, lets say i get my stuff setup on cdn, and i have a ton of approved dest urls for my landers at the traffic source, do i need to change all those dest. URLs to reflect the cdn?

Level3 and FB have exceeded akamis cdn size now. Level3 was always faster. :-)

Is this video still relevant for MaxCdn setup? Anyone have a link to this that is not private? Trying to setup MaxCDN right now...
