Performance of my FIRST EVER landing page (12)

Performance of my FIRST EVER landing page

My first (ever) campaign was for Six Flags theme park tickets. Traffic was from AdWords, which IMO turns out to be too expensive for the CR - it might run better on PPV but I haven't got there yet.

Anywhere, here's a quick summary of my LP and the associated clickthroughs:

Some points:

This obviously isn't a very thorough or conclusive study, but thought it might help others when getting started! Let me know if you want any more detail

That is badass info. thanks for sharing. How did you track the effectiveness of the different buttons? I've thought about setting up something like that on some PPV campaigns.

I pass the link "type" (button, image, highlighted text) as a subid to the offer, then pick up the main subid from the postback, so I can track how many conversions each link type gets. I put together a basic tracking system (in Ruby) which serves my LPs and tracks my links and will generate stats on performance

Definitely be more interesting with better converting (and higher traffic) offers!

great post. how many views did you get to your lander? Also- maybe a 2nd tier network with cheaper clicks, or facebook, would enable you to get this to profit.

i think for a first ever campaign you did incredibly well.

were you able top track keywords/placements and remove any that got lots of clicks but no conversions?

@tijn - Thanks! Analytics reports 202 views, Peerfly gives 87 clicks and 16 conversions - not too bad a conversion over all. Didn't do any pruning of keywords, as with only 16 submits it didn't give much to go on...there was quite an even split over the keywords. I ran on GCN as well which I think cost me quite a bit. Fast traffic, but poor keyword tracking and no real idea where it comes from. Would prefer to go through my paltry budget a bit slower with the search network only and fine tune.

My tracking also stores keywords and referring domains per conversion, so there might be some gems tucked in there.

What 2nd tier networks would you recommend?

You might want to try porting this over to Bing/Yahoo, where clicks will be cheaper and the likelihood of them canning your account is lower. Google will probably give you a zero quality score on this after a little while, since it's a bridge page. I think you're right, PPV would be great for a lander like that. Well done out of the gate man!

Good looking landing page and your tracking rocked.

I use GCN sometimes to find converting URLs for my PPV campaigns so go there and you will know which sites to start out on for your PPV campaign. Now if you dug a little deeper and look at the converting sites demographics you will surely find other sites for your PPV campaign too.

Keep going and make that sucker profitable.

Thanks brianb. I actually set up the ad on AdCenter, but it didn't get any impressions and I now mysteriously can't get into my account there. Might look at Yahoo and jump into PPV.

@bb7400 - cheers; trying to build out a good template I can easily drop submits into, but think for PPV I am going to have to scale it down to fit the popups. Assume it would be best to make the PPV popup link through to the offer page, instead of Popup -> LP -> Offer? Will take a look at the referring sites and tweak a bit.

Other networks are paying out up to 1.80 - might be worth splitting both neworks, but honestly don't think the extra .50 is the key here, it's more a case of fine tuning who sees the ad!

Very awesome post and data man! You have inspired me to add this type of link tracking to my own custom tracking system.. great idea and thanks

For all the pros here, what I am wondering is this:

Based on this info, would you remove the LINK ACTION from the links that didn't convert? I understand there is a very tiny amount of data there, but say for instance he had thrown 1000X as much traffic at this, and those links performed similarly (0% CR) - would you then just disable them and try to get people clicking on the links that lead to conversions instead? Maybe the people who clicked the top links did so accidentally and weren't quite ready to commit to the offer yet?

Just trying to figure out how the inner link tracking can be used to our advantage...

@billybluehat: Yes definitely get the campaign tweaked up to the point it's profitable with your current (lower paying offer) and then test some different networks I would say... If the other offers perform near your first, the ROI boost will just be icing on the cake

Great little write up dude.

If you feel like attacking it again I split test a lander that is more official looking (using the same colors, fonts etc as six flags).

Also I would write a reason why six flags are giving away free tickets.

Yes yes I know you haven't split tested anything, but try a more family oriented image as opposed to an extreme roller-coaster.

Either way great stuff!

Agree with Mr Green said on LP tests. Especially about the part making the page look more "official"

I also dont think all hope is lost on Google for a camp like this.

What is your Earning Per Visitor (rev/total clicks to LP)?

Did you break out search and content? If you're doing search you can get tons of volume for a camp like this just gotta make sure to get your QS up. PM me and I'll share a trick (not sure if it still works) that you can try to get QS up on a small budget.

For the content camp you should read some more threads on here as I think if you pick your placements rather than do broad targetting you may see better results.

Good luck.

Thanks Mr. Green, both good tips - I will test a new LP later on today/tonight/tomorrow and report back. Although, not had any converts today, so wondering if it's been scrubbed for some reason.

EPV is pretty much $0.11 (no idea if that's good or bad, at this stage).

It is search and content in one, but I definitely see the advantage of splitting them out for more control. Nothing jumps out from the domains, but definitely can prune out some of the more spammy looking ones with 0 conversions and focus on those that have converted. Will read up.
