How to tell if your VPS isn't up to snuff for serving ads? (9)

How to tell if your VPS isn't up to snuff for serving ads?

I have a VPS from bibihost that I was using for another project, with 1 GB ram, 1 GBPS link (supposedly), etc. I tested out an optimized lander on my host and according to pingdom it's taking about 1.4-1.5 seconds to load. (0.9 seconds to load a 48 kb image). I know if you're running volume you definitely want to scale up, but at what point to you think statwise your VPS is holding you back? I must've ran 1200-1300 clicks at a branded ZIP submit with only 1 conversion. I figured it was just the offer, but I was just wondering if anyone had a better way to quantify these things. Thanks!

That's slow, A the host has obviously overcommited the crap out of the servers and the disk are not keeping up, and B the uplink is probably 1GBPS but shared across hundreds of servers.

A quick glance at their pricing confirms this.

I hear Beyond Hosting is solid, I use Silicon Valley. You want to work with a company that will custom build a server with your specific needs in mind with the ability to scale easily.

Off the rack hosting has always been shit for me. You pay more on custom stuff for sure, all of my servers cost me three times what you get off a well known provider, but they are about 100 times more powerful, secured from even major DOS attacks (had a few) and I can get them on the phone 24/7 for any issues.

I've had so many hosting nightmares over the years and really hosting should be the last thing we have to worry about with all the other complicated shit on our backs each day. The lesson that always smacks me in the face is go with the best, you get what you pay for.

Agreed, $25 is a bit low for a decent VPS. You should be able to handle decent volume with something in the $50-60 range with 1GB of RAM.

Just get a decent dedicated box, most VPS are oversold

I've always had the feeling that I was losing money sometimes on certain campaigns where traffic was just nonstop. I'm using Storm On Demand's Cloud VPS 2gb, may need to upgrade soon.

That's why you don't look at the $25 price point...
