Mobile Facebook Traffic (you've seen the ads...)

Beautiful ads are showing up on the Facebook app lately, I've only seen ones for Apps.

At first it was pointed out by Alex (Mobaff) AKA Angry Russian. That when you buy mobile facebook ads it shows the ad to anyone who's has used a mobile phone with their account.

ie;
The advertiser: is the Nike app for Android, so they target "Android"
The user: You're an android user, and you've logged into Facebook with your Android before, but 4 days later you're at home and login on your computer, yet you see the Android Nike ad.

I have a feeling this isn't the case anymore, has anyone tested?

So you're saying that targetting android for example is useless because it will show the ad on any machine if the account has been accessed from an android device at some point?

One thing, can you buy FB mobile inventry in the usual FB ad interface? I know Sitescout had some FB app traffic....

Looks like its only for promoting Apps atm - and you need to have the FB SDK in your app to be able to use it.

You are buying traffic on the Facebook APP - its very clear whether its iOS or Android traffic you are buying (they've installed either the iOS APP or the Android APP) and its not like buying mobile web traffic from Facebook where the targeting is very poor

@deon

Alrighty, they didn't have this option before. That APP targeting will become very profitable if they open it to products other than apps

I don't think they will. They are going the same route as Admob - basically a LOT less hassle if you only have to deal with App installs from the Android and iOS stores as they do all the quality control for you.

The other problem is that they seems to think that mobile traffic should cost the same as web traffic. Would you pay 50c CPC for a mobile ad?

The opportunity for affiliates I think is when Facebook launch their own mobile app store. You can then create mobile apps like you would any other Facebook App and promote that.

Makes sense. Saves them from a lot of hassling and complaints.

The 50c CPCs isn't too bad from a developer standpoint. Assuming you have a good CTR that 50c will go to 25c, and 25c clicks for a successful game with a big user database and an iAP store is well worth it in the US.

There are a lot of startups/app makers who want installs but have no idea how to go about doing it. Some are funded, in which case they have some money to pay for it. Most are not, but they are probably willing to pay on a CPI basis if it backs out for them.

I think there's a lot of opportunity you can seek out in partnership with these app makers. You may have to put up an initial test budget, but there's a lot of apps that have some traction, have revenue, have a pretty decent business model, but just haven't tested it at scale.

If you find one of these that backs out well, by first doing FB mobile app install ads for targeted installs, you will have a very dependable exclusive offer for the long term. That's what we're trying out with a very interesting app with about a 1,000 users we found in our local startup community.
