Herman Miller Embody Chair?

HI

Just purchased the Herman Miller Embody after trying it for 30 Min and just wondering if anyone has this chair and what they think of it? I personally liked it a lot but interested in hearing from those who use it for long periods of time. They say it's one of the best Ergonomic chairs ever made but you never can believe the hype.

I have both the Embody and the Aeron from Hermin Miller. I had the Aeron chair first, and loved it. Had it for about 5 years. Just switched to the Embody Chair late last year, and at first didn't notice much difference. Over time however, I have come to like to much more than the Aeron chair.

Recently, I sat down in the Aeron chair, (kept it, just moved it to another desk in my office) and boy, is didn't feel nearly as good as the Embody. The only thing I can think of is maybe my Aeron chair is worn out and a new one would feel much better, but right now, I like the Embody much more.

The only thing better on the Aeron chair is that the chair breathes better and doesn't have the fabric like the Embody, in the summer, sometimes I sit down to work in a wet swimsuit, which is much nicer to do in a Aeron chair as opposed to an Embody.

the Embody comes in two fabrics. One the standard cheaper and the other is called balanced. The balanced has holes in the fabric to breath and the Herman Miller rep told me that the chair was designed with the balanced fabric but they opted to sell a lower end fabric as well but for on $100 difference might as well get the better, stronger balanced fabric that also breathes. I sat and tested both the Aeron and Embody but found the Embody more comfortable.

Had mine for 3 years now - best desk chair imo. Just no head support and the chrome for the base is oxidizing/getting dull.

I changed to Aeron chair 3 months back and that solves my back pain problem. Was confuse which one should I go for but I guess most importantly, the chair must be able to solve your problem. Never tried Embody chair thought...

Yeah, I have the higher end fabric, it still doesn't breathe as good as the Aeron. That is my only complaint about it though.

After I got my Aeron my search for chairs stopped. Now I hear about this unicorn of desk chairs Embody thing... hehe

Good thing it's out of my budget!

what about desks? what do you guys use?

i'm moving, and need to get some new shit.... so read this stuff about the chairs.... what do they go for?

Desks is my next immediate office upgrade. I actually almost got this desk from Herman Miller http://www.hermanmiller.com/products...elop-desk.html. and here is the demo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nq9eo5ml5pI. It costs around $1200-$1300 without the electronic switch just manual. The electronic up and down costs around $2000-$2500 I beleive. The only reason I can't get it is because 2 (27) inch or 3 monitors will not fit. Unless You use the desk which is only 45 inches wide along with another desk which would be a secondary work station.

Guys, this may interest you since I think its an great value. A desk exactly like this from Ikea http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/pr...13/#/S39837013 is selling for $1000 in the Herman Miller Dealer store and its a floor model. The beauty of that desk is that its is height adjustable and at $170 its an incredible value.

ok I will bite....

not sure why people would pay that much for office furniture....I really don't see the point...

when i look at a $1200 chair and a $2000 desk....I see $2500 I could have spent on more fun things....

My guess is you are young and healthy, which is awesome. For many of us sitting in a chair all day is not comfortable because as humans it's not what we are designed for.

If I can pay $1200 for a chair that will increase my office productivity by just 1% it's gonna pay for itself. It's not a "fun" purchase it's an investment that I expect to achieve a ROI out of.

I'm a very frugal person for the most part but also my body is pretty wimpy and if I mistreat myself I feel it quickly. Good healthy food over cheap fast food and a comfortable environment will pay for itself all day long for me.

There is nothing more important than your posture and overall health, young and old. If your job consists of sitting in front of a computer for 4-8 hours a day, then trust me, you need a ergonomic chair. It boils down to making your environmental a comfortable, healthy and overall productive space. Spending $3k-5k for the best office furniture, PC, Monitors is cost of doing business. Don't get me wrong the chair is not a substitute for exercise, which everyone should do. However, Hillman Miller chairs have been scientifically proven to be more healthy than your regular $300-#500 chairs.

staples FTW....and I am far from young....prob one of the oldest guys on the forum....and I have ruptured a disc a few years back as well....

all I am saying is I have no doubt HM is a decent chair but its also excellent marketing.....

one could argue that a bmw is far better than my sentra...but I seemingly have no issues getting from point A to point B......

and I debate the whole "cost of doing biz" thing.....alot of biz's fail just on that one idea alone...

"the cost of doing biz" is the mantra of corporate waste..... imo....

you are comparing material objects to a scientifically proven chair which Harvard studies have proven to help a person's posture and elevate stress from your back and overall body. When I purchased my Embody chair in the afternoon I was the 5th person that day purchasing the same exact specs. Obviously, you can choose to work on your kitchen or dining table but for those who care about their posture, overall health and obviously can afford it, any high end ergonomic chair will only help your productivity.

12-28-2012 06:31 AM #19 mi6430 (Member)

Oh by the way, you can also run or walk from point A to point B. Even better use a donkey. The main question is how you will get to either point. Will you get to point A or point B with comfort or style or will you get there in a piece of crap which has no style, handling or comfort. Hence why most people, if they could afford it, will choose the BMW over the Sentra.

the chair you are describing is a material object last I knew....or is it not a chair?

point I am trying to make here is that these things are not needed to make one productive.....a chair, a pc, a mac, blah d blah blah does not define your productivity.....you do....

and I see spending $200 on a decent chair from staples and $1000 on traffic a far better use of my money....then a scientifically proven chair....

but thats just me riding my donkey I guess.....

Reminds me of the 'I get 500% ROI on my mac while on PC my camps are losing' mentality

^^^Hahaha. Personally, I stand while working so that's some free money right there! And it's much healthier, as sitting for hours has been shown to be incredibly unhealthy over the long run:

Sitting is Lethal

12-28-2012 07:05 PM #23 zeno (Administrator)

I'd prefer a standing desk just because it would make me less lazy. The whole sitting-decreases-lifespan thing depends on the person. Sure if you're doing it all day and shit all else then standing would be better. But if you're constantly moving between sitting > standing and exercise regularly it's probably not that important. If you're going to spend $1000+ on a chair I'd hope it's because you either have postural/back problems or realise your posture is slack and want to improve it. That being said, you don't necessarily need such an expensive chair to do it, but when you have the money to burn why not... better than some of the stupid things you see rich people buying elsewhere.

Just received my Herman Miller Embody and I can tell you first hand that it is diffidently worth every penny. The chair adjust to my body and table from my back, legs and arm. Amazing. Plus my existing table is a piece of crap and this chair adjusts every angle to conform to it. Now, for the first time ever since I came to my office last year I actually feel comfortable sitting for long periods of time.

12-29-2012 02:30 PM #25 dconstrukt (Member)

lol... polar is right. you dont NEED any of this stuff. its your head talking... telling you why you need it.

shit, i work in bed most of the day and bank.

you dont need a desk or chair.

sure its nice and helps, but do you REALLY need it? thats what I think polar was trying to say.

i'm a jew, fuck spending 1k on a chair. LOL

12-29-2012 03:55 PM #26 mi6430 (Member)

Really, you create landing pages, photoshop, code, design, chat, write all from your bed. Based on your theory everyone should give up their desks, chairs and jump into bed. What a load of crap. People that purchase ergonomic chairs or desks are not doing it so they can be productive or get rich they are doing it so that they can be comfortable for long periods of time in a sitting position. YOUR MISSING THE POINT!

Don't know how this thread turned from my asking if anyone had any longterm experience of using Herman Miller Embody to chairs are not gonna make you productive or rich.

12-29-2012 09:57 PM #27 dconstrukt (Member)

lol... dude, where the fuck did you learn to read?

I said "sure its nice and helps, but do you REALLY need it? thats what I think polar was trying to say."

how does that turn into: "Based on your theory everyone should give up their desks, chairs and jump into bed."?

and YES, I do all that laying in bed.... lunch... then work from either starbucks or at home sitting in my chair... feet up on desk. The chairs are cool, I dont think I'd spend a grand on a chair, a few hundred? sure... but i'm a cheap fucker with stuff like that.

LOL... And you talk about me missing the point?

12-30-2012 01:33 AM #28 mi6430 (Member)

Don't know why you have to start using profanity. However, you made the most accurate assessment yet, " A Cheap Fucker" . I completely agree.

12-30-2012 12:58 PM #29 dconstrukt (Member)

so lets see if i got this right... you cant read, twist what I say into something else and then start flaming me?

you need to check yo'self.

keep it up pal... you'll make a lotta friends here like that.

12-30-2012 09:42 PM #30 danny27 (AMC Alumnus)

I just ordered the steelcase leap chair hope it solves my shoulder problem. Got carpal up to shoulders... it's a bitch. THe Herman Miller is like way costly and less adjustments.

mi6430, add yoga and pilates to your schedule if you are going to spend that much on a chair.

12-31-2012 06:09 AM #32 mi6430 (Member)

already do Yoga. How did you know? By the way sitting on the Herman Miller and its worth every penny.

01-01-2013 11:45 PM #33 pokersensei (Member)

Aside from the comfort and ergonomic benefits of Herman Miller chairs, they also have very nice resale value. I bought an Aeron chair for ~$800 and five years later sold it for ~$600 on craigslist. So it cost me $40/year to use it.

01-02-2013 05:13 PM #34 mi6430 (Member)

Thanks for that tip Pokesensei. Never knew that.
