They we're wondering how it's legal. The comments pretty much explain the 101 reasons on how it gets overlooked and 99.9% of the time it's fine to use images from really big brands on ads that don't yield tons of negative attention.

Sometimes no one cares, sometimes you'll get ads taken down due to IP claims and you get notices from FB. Sometimes you can get into more shit. I once advertised a game on FB and used art of LoL characters which I assumed was fanart/deviantart stuff, turned out they were from splash screens (was pretty obvious in retrospect when looking at the consistent art style). I actually asked some of my friends who play LoL to cruise the net and find me some cool character art, didn't realise they found me heaps from an official asian-region game art thread on the official forums, i.e. art trademarked to high heaven. Know where your images comes from at least...
As it turns out, the game devs at LoL had some bad history with the developers of the game I was advertising (i.e. new game somewhat ripping a lot of their character design) so I basically poked a den of angry, bitter snakes. One of the ads went viral in their forum and got a lot of attention, company president even posted in the thread (which was abnormal...), thread popped up on the other side to with official statement from the other game dev. So basically, I used some images I shouldn't have used and managed to start a shitstorm. Caught wind of it very early and nuked all the campaigns, still obviously led back to me. In the end it's a good thing as it led to me focusing on how to make better and better ads.
Moral of the story: for gaming, yes you can use branded/trademarked images, watch the wording, be more careful in English speaking countries, be aware some game companies are a lot more touchy about things. Trion will take down your ads quick, Riot Games can be touchy, Blizzard gives no fucks.
lol reddit, the most miserable cesspit on the entire internet.
The day I blocked their insipid hellhole on OpenDNS and didn't read any more from those ignorant fuckwits was the most productive day of my life.
Reddit is the reason I get very little work done.
