Long Term Website Plan, Thoughts?

Hey All-

As the new year approaches, I am starting to develop my goals for 2013. As part of that, I have decided that I want to launch a website and develop it into a full time business. I know a lot of STM talk is about buying traffic, sending it to offers, email lists, etc. What I am looking to do is develop something more long term and can be taken offline.

Meow don't laugh, but basically, I want to start a cat product website. I have 2 cats (I promise you I am normal) and consider myself a "cat-guy". My goal is to build a web showcase for awesome cat products that I think people would love for their pet. I hope to initially link them to the manufacturer's site and earn a commission.

So right now, this is nothing different than your run of the mill amazon review site, right? The difference is that I want to build a brand and eventually leverage the brand and site to launch a cat toy product line (which can be sold on the site), maybe a cat treats line, all kinds of stuff.

My goal is to use facebook and other SM sites to generate a following, drive traffic and create interest.

I haven't developed a formal business plan yet, this is more of a concept right now. I just wanted to get anyone's feedback on this approach, if you have had success in something similar, am I wasting my time? etc.

Also, this was basically a stream of thought so I apologize if it is all over the place and somewhat incomplete. Thanks for reading!

I had a cat related FB page for awhile. It's not that great a niche for online sales because people are constantly in the store buying food and stuff anyways, why buy it online?

I sold some cat stuff through Amazon, toys, food books ect. But it was far from a home run and nothing I would want to build a whole business around.

This is just my experience so don't let me discourage you in your plans.

That's cool, I mean why not, if that is your passion. If you have a good personality to make videos and brand yourself as a cat expert, I think that would help you overall be successful.

We all know that people spend huge money on dog related products and toys. I think it's not that hard to get a market share very quickly because there are plenty of methods to generate traffic for free like funny videos, weird cat names, some kind of competitions via twitter and pinterest - the best picture, the most trained cat etc. Spend a day by visiting a few popular cat forums and copycat the most discussed topics to build your own community, read customer base

Great vertical IMO but you should give an original touch to the website to be really successful

You may find this interesting from Ad Hustlers blog:

Bit of a case study on using Facebook to help build your brand in a pretty cost-effective way, and the niche is pets.

Worth a look
