I have some Facebook questions (12)

I have some Facebook questions

Hey,

instead of making a new thread for every question I have, I'll make one thread and put them all in here.

So I have been reading everything about Facebook for the last 2 weeks and have some questions.

1. For targerting, is it better to start small and very targeted (just a small segment), and then find the images/copies that are converting, and then expand out? Or should I do it the opposite way, as in target everything related, and then find the images/copy that are converting/promising, and then cut it down to a more targeted audience?

2. So what's the best way to make $$ on FB? Direct linking? Custom landing pages? Email marketing? Fan pages? I suppose "it depends", but how should I go about it if I am a noobie? What's the best way to start?

3. So it seems FB hates email/zip submits. Why is that?

4. Related to (3), what offers are considered "safe" and generally acceptable on FB? Offers that I shouldn't have problems promoting? I am thinking I will keep it safe when I begin.

5. Is it okay to use celebrity pictures? And it seems like, generally, it's okay to use basically any picture on the internet...?

6. I have Optimized Press. I also have zero coding/html skills. So, if I wanted to make custom landers, is the easiest way to build them on wordpress and link people to them? So it seems like if I want to hit another vertical, I have to register another domain.... cause the root domain wouldn't really make sense?

7. FB automatically resizes images, so is there a reason I need to make the image size exact before uploading? And for someone with no photoshop skills, is crazy ctr a worthwhile investment?

8. Is it a good idea to start international advertising while "learning"? In fact, how should I start as a beginner? I'll most definitely lose money, but I want to learn the most possible without hurting the bank too much.

Any input and advice is well appreciated and will be met with a "thanks"

1. Probably better to go small and targeted. You can get good CTR's if you make your ad copy / images specially tailored to the audience. For example...instead of going broad with dating...you could target black colleges, and promote black dating offers targeted to them.

2. Start out direct linking lead gens. Usually I direct link to see if something's working. If it's good then I'll build out a lander.

3. They don't want you gathering their email addresses and spamming them. It makes Facebook look bad. In their ideal world they'd only have advertisements from the big brands and wouldn't deal with guys like us.

4. Dating and gaming are generally the safest verticals. Ask your AM's for suggestions on stuff to promote on Facebook

5. No celebrity pictures, you might get sued. Whatever pics you use make sure you have the rights to them.

6. Problem with using wordpress is the loading speeds are extremely slow. If it takes too long for a website to load, the person might hit the back key and you just lost money. If your new I highly learn how to create your own pages even if you don't know any coding or HTML skills. There's also WYSIWYG stuff like Dreamweaver or CoffeeCup.com. You could also hire someone to make you a page.

7. I usually go with the exact size.

8. Yes I highly recommend international countries. Go to onehourtranslate to get ad copies translated. Clicks are cheaper in some countries which lets you get more data for your budget to learn how to test. They're also less competitive in general.

I'll answer the questions related to images since that's my main expertise:

5. It's very risky to use celebrity pictures, you may get intro problems. However, few of my users use some celebrity pictures and applies some pixelate or blurry effect over, but I still don't recommend that.

7. Facebook automatically resizes your image, but if the image is too big, it may lose it's sharpness. The fact is, Facebook is resizing the images server-side to fit into 110x80 bounds, but they use CSS to re-fit to 100x72.

If you are very serious with aff marketing, you should learn photoshop, this will help you tremendously in the future. Talking about CrazyCTR, try for yourself, the browser extension saves time in gathering/cropping images and the tweak part will get some higher CTRs, saving time with variations creation even if you are good in Photoshop. Here's the official thread http://stmforum.com/forum/showthread...ons-in-no-time

I am very serious in IM. Looks like photoshop it is. It seems like no matter what I do, I'll be needing to creating images/ads/banners eventually. May as well learn now.

For creating custom landers, if I am not hosting them on wordpress using optimized press, how else do I host them?

Yeah, it will take a bit to learn but it's worth long term, especially for bigger banners and landers. If you gonna start right away and you decide to give a try to CrazyCTR, hit me on skype: virgil.ci, i'll give you some CTR tips related to the offer/campaign you are running.

if you want to learn html/css/dreamweaver, photoshop, etc, you should sign up for Lynda.com. Their tutorials are easy to follow and cover a lot of ground. I think it's $25/month, but WELL worth it. Join for a month and learn PS and DW. Either that, or just lock yourself in your room for 2 days and go to http://w3schools.com. That's what I did to learn.

Grab already done one one pager or larger HTML/CSS templates from ThemeForest.

Import into DreamWeaver and mod as desired.

I would also recommend Kompozer if you don't have dreamweaver. It's free and available for both mac and pc.
