Has anybody made BLOGADS (or similar services) pay? (4)

So I started messing around with a few sites advertising on there using Blogads.com
The interface is clunky IMHO, I've gotten around double the clicks I usually get for conversions (over a LONG period of time -- not as much volume for sure) and yeah like I said no conversions.
I'm not sure why it wouldn't convert well though -- the ads are on sites that match my demos -- could be the placement, only one was above the fold (got the most clicks, double what I normally need for at least 1 CR but nothing doing).
Anyways, was wondering if anyone had made these types of small scale - "sort of" direct site buys work?
I did a nice test using blog ads last year, and had the same problem. I forget my exact diagnosis but i think a big part of it was the ad spaces/placements of the ads. Theyre usually in shitty cluttered spots, and most of the sites with traffic on blogads are celeb gossip sites which aren't the best.
Theres 2 other good services that have sites in other niches;
- http://buysellads.com/buy and i forget the 2nd but it has big ad spots on really popular mainstream sites. Look around for similar ad services and you'll find it. The layout of the site is a blue and black incase anyone can chime in with the URL.
