Move on to Namecheap

09-10-2012 07:20 PM #7 swiftclick (Senior Member)

lol i have 95% of my domains registered through namecheap, it just so happens that the ONE domain i have through godaddy, is the one i use for prosper202. had to pause most of my ads, luckily all my mobile campaigns go through a different domain not registered with them.

namecheap ftw

09-10-2012 07:25 PM #9 hummer (Member)

one more vote for namecheap

09-10-2012 07:26 PM #10 BeyondHosting-Tyler (Member)

Even if your domain is registered with godaddy it won't take you down. Your DNS still resolves via the internet root servers.

09-10-2012 07:31 PM #11 andrawisnaser (Member)

all my domain registered with godaddy is down even its hosted with another hosting

but i really like namecheap so i am gonna move right away

My domain is registered with godaddy, hosting is through beyond. can't access that domain whatsoever.

But the entry at the root server will expire once it passes the TTL

You still having that problem mate? I have a few domains with GoDaddy and they are working just fine

09-10-2012 08:29 PM #15 mehdi10 (Member)

Same with me , I have few domains hosted with Godaddy ( Ofcource namecheap as well ) that are working fine with no problem at all...

09-10-2012 08:29 PM #16 scmtwells (Member)

If your nameservers are hosted at GoDaddy, then you have problems.

You should move your nameservers to your VPS provider. That way, you won't have problems if your registrar goes down. Only if your VPS providers
goes offline.

For those affected, the point is moot until GoDaddy comes back online.

FYI guys.. namecheap is just reselling enom. You could buy through enom directly. If you buy domains through us its also enom. I think we beat namecheaps pricing now to.

Wrong.

The root of all domain names begins in root-servers, delegated by IANA and maintained by ICANN.
From there, depending on the TLD, it will go to the name servers owned by that TLD registry.
Using .com for example, Verisign owns and operates the .com TLD.

Root-servers -> com -> Verisign GTLD-Servers -> domain.com

Verisign GTLD servers are updated using the EPP API by domain registrars.
When receiving and processing EPP XML transactions from the registrar Verisign will update the gtld-servers with the glue record for the domain.
The reference for this EPP XML transactional format is available at:
http://www.verisigninc.com/en_US/pro...dk/index.xhtml

Example XML transaction for EPP Register Name Servers command:
C:<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="no"?>
C:<epp xmlns="urn:ietfarams:xml:ns:epp-1.0">
C: <command>
C: <create>
C: <host:create
C: xmlns:host="urn:ietfarams:xml:ns:host-1.0">
C: <host:name>ns1.example.com</host:name>
C: <host:addr ip="v4">192.0.2.2</host:addr>
C: <host:addr ip="v4">192.0.2.29</host:addr>
C: <host:addr ip="v6">1080:0:0:0:8:800:200C:417A</host:addr>
C: </host:create>
C: </create>

For example, using beyondhosting.net:
A.ROOT-SERVERS.NET [.] (198.41.0.4)
|\___ m.gtld-servers.net [com] (192.55.83.30)
| |\___ ns2.beyondhosting.net [beyondhosting.net] (184.154.81.75) Got authoritative answer
| \___ ns1.beyondhosting.net [beyondhosting.net] (74.126.89.132) Got authoritative answer

Root-servers redirects us to the operational name servers for com
Since com is owned by Verisign, we get the gtld-servers.net cluster operated by Verisign
m.gtld-servers.net informs us that beyondhosting.net is managed by ns1/ns2.beyondhosting.net .
Given that ns1/ns2.beyondhosting.net are also registered name servers within the same registry (com/net share gtld-servers.net), verisign also returns the IP addresses for ns1/ns2 as an additional resource record.
If they were not registered / from a different TLD (e.g. beyondhosting.com.uk) no IP addresses would be returned and the process would repeat for the com.uk TLD authoritative name servers.

TLDR- Godaddy being down could not have affected anyone using PRIVATE NAME SERVERS and not relying on Godaddy's domaincontrol.com cluster.
This is because Godaddy does not operate any TLD directly and has no cluster referred to or delegated by root-servers.net.
Reference: IANA TLD delegation list, http://www.iana.org/domains/root/db

And anyone using godaddys DNS services for affiliate marketing deserves to be down.
