Spy account question
I'm trying to do a little spying on FB so I created an account using a VPN. However, I'm not getting any ads showing up on the home page. I tried liking some stuff that I know people are targeting and even added a few friends. Do I need to post comments and stuff or does it just take a little while to get the new account in the system?

You may need to wait some more time and let facebook show you relevant ads based upon your activity and interests...!!!

They seem to be getting better at not showing ads to fake accounts. Ads used to show up right away, now I'd say 90% of my fake spy accounts never show ads.

You can try out Matej's SocialAdNinja spy tool, they have a discount for STM:

You're welcome to try us out as well. Here's my thread.
We have systems in place that notify us immediately if any accounts stop serving ads, are disabled, or encounter any other issues. These are replaced with backups almost immediately so there's no downtime with our tool.

Used this tool and got back what I paid for the month in less than a few hours with a little tweaking of existing ad copies

With Facebook getting more difficult, strict and unpredictable these days......can you still make decent money using spy tools? I know that you can still identify the top ads with high frequency (and then tweak them as people seem to be doing to make their money back the same day) but are there other factors to consider before signing up and diving straight in?
I've been thinking about purchasing a FB spy tool and would be interested to know what the sign-up retention rates are (and the success rates) but I understand that that sort of data is private to the spy tool owners (absolutely fair enough) and also that people having success with them would probably be staying under the radar and keeping tight lipped.

There are definitely other factors. You shouldn't subscribe to any paid tool before understanding the basics of running a campaign - that includes tracking, optimizing bids (set bids high initially then lower once the CTR establishes), etc. Since you're subscribed to STM, I'm sure you're already comfortable with most of this.
Second, try to enter international markets. They will be less competitive and allow you to hit profitability faster. Take localized ad copies relevant to your vertical from these countries, then take the top-performing images from mature markets for that vertical - and mix the two. The result will be a ridiculously profitable campaign! If you are okay with spending a bit, take the ad copies that are working well in mature markets as well - then use One Hour Translation to localize the text and launch with the images you found.
Also, a particular creative's "frequency" might just be high because they've been running for a while. Don't just rely on this measure now that we have more features! The larger an advertiser's current effective CPM rate and budgets, the higher up they're pushed in position compared to other advertisers. This makes sense since the network wants to squeeze as much money from the campaign as possible. Now if you set a minimum "average position" to isolate these campaigns that are doing well, you'll be able to narrow currently profitable campaigns almost immediately.
Try this query - set redirects to ">1 Redirects" (implying it's an affiliate since they're likely using a tracking link), minimum position of "5" (so they've always been given priority), and then sort ads by "frequency". I just ran this query and pretty much every creative is an affiliate campaign that's making a killing this very minute. Keep in mind the "Average Position" and "Redirect" features are only a few months old so this will weed out a lot of the older campaigns, although the results will be very relevant.

Let me say this - almost every major affiliate I know is currently using our tool. I can say that our drop-off rate on the "All Countries" package (to which most of the larger affiliates subscribe) is very low, which means most are at least recouping the cost of their subscription for them to stay subscribed for this long. It also proves that international is the way to go! In spite of us never publicly asking for testimonials, our users constantly reach out to us with appreciation. You can see some of the feedback we've received
here.

Sweet post. It's definitely something I'm going to try once I can fit it into the budget.
