One of the topics I've been researching to death for my next round of Premium Posts is the murky world of subliminal advertising. Marketing like this:

It's amazing how what you think is being advertised is only half of the story. Many of the top ad agencies in the world use two levels of advertising in their display and video campaigns - one for the conscious, one for the subconscious.
Guess which targeting is most effective?
If you want a shocking depiction of how sex is used to sell just about everything, check out this article for a list of visual examples:

Even the US government can be found using it:

What do you see when you look at the flag in the background? There's something hiding in the stripes.
Sex is everywhere. It sells and you can't avoid it.
So, have you considered planting your own subliminal messaging in landing pages and ads? If you haven't, you can bet your competitors already are.
Hey Finch, I've retweeted your tweet, this is fucking genius, I love this
I'm passionated about all the old fashioned ads https://www.google.com/search?q=old+...isch&source=og , Ogilvy and all that kind of stuff that makes our job ridiculous
:O:O
Its a master piece!

The question I have is whether this is really intended subliminal advertising, or bored creatives/copywriters having some fun to spice up their boring days. Or take silent revenge on those annoying clients that trashed their award winning campaign idea!
lol @ this thread.
Yeah, a bit of a stretch at times...especially all the "sex" supposedly written on ice cubes ahaha..
Still would like to have a look at this "leaked top secret training manual belonging to one of the largest advertising agencies on the planet"...the wording of the few extracts sounded more like an hoax than anything else..
SOME use it.... not as often as you suspect.... however.... I know what/how its done. Went to advertising school.
Mcdonalds was using it BIGTIME a few years ago on food network.... flashing for 1/10th of a second on the screen.... all red with their logo and the saying "i'm lovin' it".
no clue if they're still doing it.
But... keep in mind... people are out looking for this subliminal stuff... so with that frame as the starting point... consider this: Your mind naturally looks for associations to support beliefs. So.... anything you see that you can possibly use to support this belief, then you do it.
Its how the human mind works.
Its why in sales.... when I worked in boiler rooms, we used to do something called "cementing the close" which basically was getting the new client to feel good about their decision (which we highly influenced)... doing this for the most part ensured the client didn't get remorse and cancel their new account/investment.
Another example... you see these shows on bigfoot. these people are out looking for the thing right? And anything they hear/see that can't 100% be mistaken, they start saying its bigfoot.
BTW.... Derren brown had an awesome episode of him using subliminal stuff to these 2 guys.... if you can find it, its pretty awesome.
I love the Derren Brown shows, but you always have to take even his 'honest' explanations with a pinch of salt.
Misdirection is his biggest skill. What he leads people to believe is subliminal influence usually has a much less exciting process, even if that means researching his entire audience on Facebook before shows! He's the best in the business at what he does.
I agree that the Clash of the Titans stuff is BS. Not sure how that even found it's way in there to be honest.
But examples of other forms are scattered throughout the media. Doesn't really take much effort to find them if you're actively seeking them out, but then that's the point. Most people are blissfully unaware of what messages their brains are receiving.
I loved Ryan Eagle's crack at the subliminal on EWA a few months ago. You'd load the homepage and 'OBEY' would flash for a split-second. Nowhere near briefly enough to breach the subconscious, but a nice touch for advertisers logging in nonetheless!
ya... derren is awesome. love watching him....

"Claims persist that subliminal messages can have significant effects on motives and behavior. Among the more dramatic declarations are claims that: (1) subliminal auditory messages can induce weight loss, smoking cessation, etc., (2) reversed speech messages in popular music can corrupt youthful listeners, (3) psychotherapy can be facilitated by the subliminal stimulation of unconscious wishes, and (4) advertisers can exploit consumers by means of subliminal directives. A review of the pertinent research purporting to demonstrate these claims was conducted. It is concluded that there continues to be no evidence that subliminal messages can influence motivation or complex behavior."
From Wikipedia -
The near-consensus among research psychologists is that subliminal messages do not produce a powerful, enduring effect on behavior;[2] and that laboratory research reveals little effect beyond a subtle, fleeting effect on thinking. Research on those claims of lasting effects—such as weight loss, smoking cessation, how music in popular culture may corrupt their listeners, how it may facilitate unconscious wishes in psychotherapy, and how market practitioners may exploit their customers—conclude that there is no effect beyond a placebo[6] or making the person conscious of their current condition.[7] Importantly, research on action priming has shown that subliminal stimuli can trigger only those actions that one plans to perform anyway: only if a person already has the specific intention to perform a certain action, can this action be subliminally triggered.[8] The following sections have more information on specific studies in which the effectiveness of subliminal stimuli are investigated.

Just because people are doing it doesn't mean it works. As can be seen above, the academic literature argues against the validity of subliminals. Nonetheless, I suppose testing would be the only way to reveal the truth.
Good clarification dusklife
I guess the question, related to what we do, is about what is classed a "powerful" effect and one that is "enduring"
Ie - can you class getting the user to take the next action (ie click a button, optin to an offer) as "powerful" and "enduring" ?
Does a call to action contain a subliminal message which makes them more effective?
A picture of a face looking to the CTA button?
Does the classic 3 word change to "if operators are busy, please call again" contain any?
They work seem to work.
Just not sure I would class these as "subliminal" messages
You have a point. When it comes to something as simple as increasing CTR on a landing page, the psychological effect of something potentially considered subliminal may be minimal, but it would certainly work for our purposes.
I guess you just have to test

How do they advertise that site to women?
CougarLife.com
for Little Boy Shaggers
Boggles my mind.
Same as LocalSlappers really. What state of mind does a woman have to be in to sign up for it?
Most women I know, even when horny, resist the idea of being called slappers.
You can try but I don't recommend it on the first date!
I doubt there are any "real" woman on that site that signed up to something called "localslags" or "littleboyshaggers" - maybe its the same model as cupid. Shared dating database / whitelable solution with some branding on top depending on where you as a subscriber came from.
Like tesco's own brand cereal probably came from the same factory as a named brand.
Nit picking really...
