thefalcon's Wild West Follow Along Contest - Promo on Inmobi

The same day I heard about the 2-week contest I also got an email from my Inmobi AM. No doubt others of you on Inmobi got this email too:

"I would like to offer you a free
consultation for the next 2 weeks. This consultation Includes:

1) Campaign Setup
2) Expedite Ad approval
3) Optimization For campaigns"

I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to take a shot at Inmobi while showcasing interaction with your traffic AM. This kind of experience is a great segway to working with other mobile traffic networks where there's no self-serve platform and you must work directly with your AM.

I've only just started to experiment with mobile and have yet to hit a winner. The potential volume is insane, and it's only going to increase. Promo is a fairly broad offer type and is where I have the most experience in PPV. Crazy volume potential + key competency is right where I want to be.

So let's do it!

DETAILS:

Update #1

Put together LPs
1) white simple
This one is a modded version of a lander I scraped. Gutted and replaced with my tracking. I also swapped out a majority of the images/testimonials/text to ones that I typically use.

2) dark design
Same idea as the white design. I modded a dark design that I've scraped and changed it to meet my criteria.

3) mimicked design
This is my favorite type of coding. Cut out all the weird looking js and tracking scripts and take only the stylesheets/layouts. Once you've got it tweaked, now you have a sweet template that runs seamlessly with the offer.

I believe that this is the best way to start when pursuing a mainstream offer/angle. Take proven LPs and only change them slightly if you have to. See which performs THEN start adding your creative twists. Once in awhile if I feel particularly strongly about a new idea I might put it in the first round.

Reach out to my inmobi AM
I responded to my AM's mass email offer for 2-week consultation. Currently arranging a call within their working hours 7AM GMT - 6PM GMT, which if I didn't screw up means Midnight-11AM PST... Midnight it is!

NEXT:
- Tracking: I will go outline my tracking setup in the MobAff tracker w/ screenshots
- Get the camp running on inmobi ASAP

Update #2

Tracking Setup
After a quick look through the forum and other mobile resources, it seems inmobi does not provide dynamic tokens. They have an API, but it seems too much trouble to figure out at the moment. Luckily the MobAff Tracker has some good detection features. I made a checklist of the variables I need to track:
- carrier: yes, native to tracker
- device: yes, native to tracker
- creative: yes, using different adgroups in inmobi I can manually append a creative id
- LP: yes, using vertical links to differentiate in the tracker (more details below)
- pub id: no, this is at the top of the list to ask my AM during our scheduled call tonight 1AM. this is probably the most important

The consensus seems to be that being able to track and filter out pubids is key w inmobi traffic. If I cannot find a way to pass this info to my tracker, I will have to figure out a solution from my AM. This may mean I need to add an additional postback URL to inmobi. We will find out soon.

Vertical Link (these are sortable in tracker reports. 1 LP : 1 vertical link)

All three links: 35/35/30 was the best i could do in terms of split

The subid is the only thing that needs to be passed right now. This is the flow.

I have my banners, tracking, and paths ready to go!

Questions for my Inmobi Rep:
- Pubid Tracking***
- The deposit coupon
- Cutting out adult placement from the get-go
- more about their "Optimization Features." Is is like sitescout auto-opt?

NEXT:
- Speak with my inmobi AM, find solution for pubid tracking
- Sort out any last questions
- Submit campaign and GET DAT DATA

Update #3

Inmobi Rep Convo
Pretty tipsy at 2AM but still had my meeting with my AM over skype at inmobi. Here are the important details:
- $300/day spend minimum to get pubid optimization
- you can only remove pubids once a week (really?)

I've worked it out so that after the first couple days of $300 spend I can request certain pubids to be removed. After that it will be once a week... This is a bit frustrating, but the upside is that this type of regulation is what influences their market. If I can get this system on lock, it will give me an edge over the competition.

NEXT STEPS:
- Deposit
- Setup Campaign

Update #4

So I ran into some cash flow issues (had to pay my car insurance deductible on a hit-and-run, no witnesses >.< ) and tend to the coreg fiasco which is my primary source of income.

- LP approvals: The PrizeKing offer has been switched over to requiring advertiser approval so I've sent them in.
- Deposit: Now that my funds are in order, I made a $1k deposit to Inmobi and used the promo code "YeahCPA" and got the %15 addition, which is awesome. It looks like the code is good for a couple months? I'm not complaining...

So just waiting on approvals and then I can finally run some traffic. My only last concern is if the pubid tracking will work correctly. Stay tuned...

Update #5

Sadly the advertiser is taking forever to approve my LPs... I've decided to swap out with some other iPad pin submits in the meantime. I'll continue to update this beyond the contest end.

Update #6

The contest is already over, but I thought I'd post the inital stats and observations to bring closure to this follow along. The data is promising.

Spend: $400 over 2 days
Rev: $167.75

- i had to talk to my rep to get pubids to work (halfway through)
- there are a ton of variables to optimize
- 40% click inflation (bots?), messes with my tracking stats
- have not split test any other offers

I have gotten a lot more comfortable with mobile as a result of all this and have begun designing my own testing process. There is certainly a good deal of traffic to work with and I have not even begun to begin the task of optimizing across so many variables. It definitely takes a healthy budget to optimize in mobile as a result. I hope to get this profitable after a couple more days of data (about $1000 spend total) and I'll report back once I'm in the green or if I have moved on.

I'll be following this one closely, given that my own test some time ago promoting mobile sweepstakes on inmobi proved to be a complete disaster.

let us know if the coupon worked!

@everest2012 I attempted a campaign when I first deposited $50 bucks to inmobi. No tracker no nothing and it was not great, but there were conversions. I'm hoping that by working closely with my AM I'll be able to cut out a ton of the fat and optimize in ways I could never do at first. I believe i was at -50% to -70% roi with my janky-ass first promo camp, so it's definitely possible that really bad pubs were sucking up my adspend. The conversation with my rep tonight will make everything much clearer.

I've actually been trying to get in touch with an inmobi rep for about two weeks as I still have money in the account that I'd like to test on maybe another vertical or something... The support person I've been talking to has told me Jose would be in touch with me soon, but still no dice. Is your rep willing to get in touch, by any chance?

Perhaps your rep will think differently, but for what it's worth, the support person I've been speaking to has told me straight up that inmobi isn't a great traffic source for this vertical (mobile sweepstakes). YMMV.

@everest my rep is really responsive and she checks in with me periodically. i've heard many different things regarding inmobi so i think i'll stick to testing it on my own to get a definitive answer.

@talented the coupon worked! apparently its valid for much longer. I need to buy you a beer!
