I actually hired a Statistician to review trends in traffic at BLAM Ads to perfect our adserving. It was far beyond what I, and my programmers could ever do.
I always say that the primary goal of AM is to generate store and obtain DATA. Data will allow you to scale, understand large trends, and most of all you are paying for it! The money will come with proper data and data analysis (that pesky optimization term). Without collecting all angles of data you will go nowhere with IM. Though, I have heard of some remarkable things being done without tracking at all...

Statistics (probability theory and inference, i.e. how to deduce) is a perfect example of skills that almost everyone knows is important, but yet it is so complex and, dear I say, boring for the average Joe. I feel this way atleast. So, I am always looking for tutorials of this kind - I need to refresh my statistic-skills on a regular basis. Thx again for the link.
My tip: A great forum for asking basic questions, and getting them answered by statisticians - for free, is talkstats.com. Highly recommended.
