Hey everyone,
Not new to AM but I'm new to PPV (and profits). I've done a lot of web design, so making LP's and the technical side is no problem- that said, I'll be sticking to Email/Zip submits for the next little bit as I feel it would be easier to make converting campaigns with those, until I have more money and confidence in promoting higher-end offers.
Hosting: BeyondHosting VPS
Tracking: CPVLab
Budget: $1500
Traffic Sauce: Lead Impact
Verticals: Email/Zip Submit
Offers: WolfStorm- $1000 Ikea Gift Card (Email Submit) - $1.60 CPA
EWA- Win an iPad 3 (Email Submit) - $1.85 CPA
My general strategy: Landing pages for everything. Also, I'm going to really push for what was described from the guys who participated in the STM Hunger Games- Angles. Everywhere. The main thing I need to work on is the creativity I can bring to campaigns (both in the actual LP and how it's marketed) as well as choosing good traffic targets. Basically, I'm going to try to force myself to build a bunch of landers from different angles until I find something that sticks. Sounds like a good exercise in theory.
Ikea Offer: Damn LI and not being able to bid on the target offer's domain! Though I guess that would be too easy. Once I have some data I'll post my targets and such here- Basically I've chosen 8 targets made up of enthusiast Ikea websites, places where you can buy their products online (product pages and so on), and a couple of keywords for people searching for discounts, etc on their stuff. I'll post up what I'm testing specifically when I have some data, as I'm waiting for approval now. I anticipate volume to be low.
iPad 3 Offer: The angle I'm going with here is I'm going to try to ride the crest of Justin Bieber's explosion in traffic that his websites and related fan sites will be getting, due to his recent album release and #1 billboard spots. I'll be popping the ads on places fans/followers of his will be likely to hang out, and designing them in such a way as to mimic his latest album's "Believe" marketing material, as well as his website style. Well, except for maybe the first one. It's cheesy. No idea how well this idea will convert, but I expect the volume to be higher. Also opening myself up to legal implications, but I'm technically not mentioning his actual name or using a picture of him for the ad so likeness is out of the question in my opinion (but not his lawyer's I'm sure)- besides, I'm not going to be popping this on a ton of traffic due to my daily budget, so I doubt I'll have any issues there in the short term. I am concerned about LI's demographics with this sort of idea, as they may be too mature. I'll find out soon.
Here's my first run of the iPad 3 offer. Putting something together a little more 'stylish' as I type. I don't know how I feel about the text; I feel it really doesn't grab attention, but I can't decide what to do with it. Also, the button is animated, just does a simple flashing thing (not seizure inducing). Also, "I want it!" isn't necessarily a great call to action, but is "click here" and "continue" getting tired at this point? Thoughts? That's probably the first thing I'll change.

First question: My file size for the ad is 61.05kb. Is that reasonable? Load time averages to 393ms according to Pingdom; can't see it getting much quicker than that. I lowered the quality of the images quite a bit, and don't have any extraneous data in any of my files. Also, if I understand correctly, my spend should be 2-3 times the CPA rate per target, so about $25-35 for each campaign, right?
Suggestions and/or pointers are very welcome.
Come on, LI! Approve my shit, I need to know what to do with it!
good luck man, i think LI keyword price is a bit high if u running email submit offers.
trafficvance is better one for this kind of offers.
u start via $1500,so why dont u get a trafficvance acct?
I applied for an account, they're looking for those with more earnings or a referral from someone within TV.
if u from USA/CANADA,u can ask ur network manager or STM bosses to hit u a refer
I will most certainly look into it.
In the meantime, something I hadn't considered was the CPV price for LI with running these offers. I know with PPC platforms it can be easier to control for costs when you're worrying about conversion rate against the cost of clicks, rather than clickthrough rate, conversion rate, and CPV.
Still, the money's deposited, so I have to use it at this point. Do you have any suggestions for verticals that may be a better use of my time/money? I'm not picky!
im a ppv newbie also, but i think maybe leadgen and insurance performance good at LI.
I seem to be having some issues with tracking.
I can get CPVLab to record all impressions, but no matter which method I try, I can't get my pixel to fire (iFrame, SSL, non SSL, etc). I did recently install my SSL certificate and I know it can take a day to propagate, but I'm still concerned about it since the pixel page seems to be working fine.
So I managed to fix my tracking issue. I think. Time will tell.
I turned on both campaigns in LI a little while ago, but haven't seen anything yet. Probably due to crazy low volume and targeting wildly long-tail things- bad habit from my SEO days, I guess. Unless my tracking is more broken than before, and I'm just not seeing impressions! I'll let them both run out their $5 today and see where I'm at. Once I get home this afternoon I'm going to look for and then build out two more campaigns over dinner.
Try mortgage/refinance leadgen. I advertised for one of my clients profitably on popup traffic (TV), but they said the leads didnt convert well on the backend.
Also, checkout blackpops.com , its a service run by an affiliate that allows you to scrape landers, and has codes for doing audio on your landers, an extra pop after the click etc. boom
Thanks for the tips Johnaff, Blackpops looks pretty damn interesting. Would be great to use for inspiration. I'll also definitely look into doing something in the mortgage/refinance vertical for the next campaign I build, which will probably be tomorrow.
So I've definitely determined that my targeting is horrible. I added a bunch of URL's to both offers, and I think I'm just trying to be too specific with the targeting on the offer. I've had 0 hits on both, literally. Not really surprised though - I spent some more time with a keyword tool and grabbed a bunch of more general terms that are related to to looking for discounts. Got them approved, let it sit for several hours today, and I haven't had any impressions recorded.
Here's a list of targets for both (not throwing in a bunch of variations yet because I just want conversion data, not worried about bidding around people yet):

Jeez, it's been a couple of days!
I was a bit busy with family stuff over the weekend (Long weekend up here in Canada), and I couldn't do much as far as targets were concerned because LI's offices aren't open on the weekend (obviously). Until today, that is.
I've created 3 new campaigns and I've been mad scraping URL's for more targets, but I'm still not seeing much volume. I have about 160-200 targets for every campaign; I could easily increase this to 1000+, but I feel like that is overkill- especially because the 40-day guide recommends no more than about 15 when you're first starting out. I feel like it shouldn't be so difficult to find high-volume URL's and keywords, and rather it should be harder to find well-converting traffic.
I'm putting together a credit score campaign- I'm hoping with this that I'll be able to get more traffic since I'll be able to target major bank sites and the like while the offer will remain relevant. Also, the landing page is going to be a heck of a lot more simple- I've ran through several since starting this thread, and while my targeting still needs work, I have horrible click-through's.
A better, more lengthy update shall be posted tomorrow.
