How can I acquire inventory for my own ad network?
Hey!
I know I can count on my STM buddies to fill my knowledge gaps...
I have been emailing a TON of sites in my verticals to acquire backlinks for SEO purposes... for years... I have a huge database of them and lots of recurring payments to them.
Anyway, I was thinking last night while I was emailing one... Can't I take more advantage of these relationships? What about direct media buys?
So my question is... am I STILL thinking inside the box or am I totally hitting the nail on the head there? What else can I do?
- Most of these webmasters don't have much traffic
- Most of them don't expect much money either...
- Most are US based
- Most don't currently run banners and may not want to.
Besides asking them if i can pay a monthly fee or CPM/CPC to run banners on their site, is there anything else I can do to take advantage of that relationship, as well as encourage them to become one of my publishers I can run ads on?
I want to offer something they can't refuse! I'd love to have a niche ad network of my own, so I can run my offers on it...

very interesting hope others chime in. Owning the traffic source and then putting out a self serve platform (.ike FB or POF) very cool.

Thanks CashDoctor - I have no plans for a self serve platform for now, as I'll start out just doing grunt work to get publishers relevant to offers I promote

check out adzerk as a decent free adserver (first 100m impressions free per month)
consider different types of ads, especially if they are averse to banners. The single line, different collor, link bars at the top of the screen work quit well and are not as intrusive.
another thing you can do is check if they have a "list" so you can run promos in their email newsletters

Exactly! Thanks Tijn! Since Friday I....
- I got setup on AdZerk and HIGHLY recommend that platform as well!
- I talked with Ruck a bit since he would know more than me about ad types and getting more from a pub than just a backlink, and he said the same things you're saying .
- Some of the people I've talked to so far definitely have lists.
- Many won't be into the banner idea but might be open to other things like hosted pages, etc.
Anyway

If they don't want to do banners, it'll be hard to get them to switch over (iv'e tried). So you could try working out CPA deals with the site owners.
This way you let them choose the type of advertising, and you pay them on a CPA basis. This method works if you have the right pitch. Have a a professinal stats/$ page ready to show them too.
I used to own a couple sites in a specific niche, and there were 100+ companies coming to all the site owners daily asking for banner space etc.. but this 1 guy came to everyone with a very specific stats page showing how he pays .75 per email, and he then outlined the ways your allowed to acquire the emails. His method was so different and intriguing compared to all these banner companies that everyone started sending him leads even though they wouldn't have necessarily made more money this way, but it allowed the site owners to have control and attempt to make more $ using they're own methods.
At the end of the day it broke through the site owners wall of "no", and got them all sending this 1 company traffic.

SICK! I'm definitely going to whip up a payouts/benefits/guidelines page for pubs. Thanks buddy
