New FB “Optimized CPM” Campaign Test (10)

New FB “Optimized CPM” Campaign Test

I finally got back the new ad interface and I decided to try new type of bidding called “Optimized CPM”. It should basically optimize ad impressions to get me as much actions (likes etc.) I almost always use CPC but I really wanted to try this new thing.

No custom bidding is allowed which I find really uncomfortable but I gave it a run earlier today so here it is.

I created a simple fan page about a movie character, targeted fans and created an ad. I targeted only males, living in US, all ages because I don’t know yet which age groups work best and I’ll check responder demographics report for that in a few days when it becomes available.

As you can see this short test lasted only 10 to 15 minutes and I already reached 100$ cap. It really didn’t present this new CPM bidding in the best light. Clicks are horribly overpriced and I’ll have to repeat this test with another 1000+ likes to see if this is permanent. But first impression is awful. I can’t believe it’s so pricy Closely related niche gave me 2-3 cents per click only 6 months ago.

Anybody else already tried this f* optimized CPM? Let’s discuss it.

WOW. $0.30+ CPC on 0.677% CTR is ridiculous. I know the FB platform takes time to adjust so maybe the price would drop more as you left it running? Could be the initial surge screwing with it.

I have tested it quite a bit. I have not been able to get cheap clicks no matter how much I test and tinker.

I just went back to using the regular cpm bidding for pages with tight interest targeting. Seems to still work pretty well.

My new campaign

I don't know why bro, your CTR is really good when compare to mine! But your CPC is terrible!

Let's discuss!

@hunghtq: You are using the old CPM model, the one that allows you to bid. I have tested their new feature, »automated« bidding, LOL. And I expected they'll take more money but I definitely didn’t expect this. Look again at this picture, and notice the bid is not editable:

In my ad manager, I don’t have the old CPM option anymore. But if I use power editor, I can still run standard CPM ads, where I set bid prices.

@zeno: Nah, it didn’t go down even after more clicks:P

@htgred: You are right. Regular bidding did bring me fans for half a price. But my CTR dropped to 0.112 %. FB clearly give you better ad positions if you select optimized CPM, but since they also decide how much you’ll pay, it ends up bad for the marketer.

It's a waste of TIME! I also tried it few days ago but they charge more for Clicks.
Ideal for Fan page promotion to "Friends of Fan"

I see others have come to similar conclusions I don’t know what FB thought when implementing this.

Anybody else tried optimized CPM?

Ah, I forgot to post an update... The next day after the initial optimized cpm crash, I ran a short campaign on the old CPM model where you can set your bids.

Everything stayed the same. Same ad, same targeting, but the funny part here is that FB showed much bigger audience size, even thou demographical targeting was not changed and same interest (1 keyword) was used in both ads.

The outcome: Likes did come cheaper, but not as much as I hoped because CTR went down a lot. FB posted the ad on positions that were not as good as in the 1st “Optimized CPM campaign”. This is also noticeable on the frequency. Let’s hope Fb implements frequency cap, someday

You aren't giving FB enough time to actually optimize the CPM. Try with a $5 budget and increase it in increments. Here is one I did yesterday.
