The dreaded 1% CR!!

A classic Seth blog post.

All about the conversion funnel that we so cherish in affiliate marketing...struggeling to reach above that magical 1%

He makes some very relevant points to direct your action in this blog post!

http://sethgodin.typepad.com/seths_b...he-funnel.html

Some key points:

No wonder it's so hard to convert a digital browsing audience into a real world paying one--most people are in too much of a hurry to read and think and pause and then do.
a huge audience is more difficult than the alternatives
Don't assume that a big audience is going to easily convert to action.
So how does that relate to you?

Its critical.

If your doing Facebook, PoF or Media Buys, getting 1% CTR is magical. If your overall conversion rate is close to 0.5% you could be in for a winner.

Look at it like Seth does though! You are loosing 99.5% loose interest in you along your path.

So what do you do?

Seth gives some hints at the end of the post.

Target a more specific audience with a message that is specific to their interest/needs/desires. Stack talked about it a while back and gave an example I think of a facebook dating campaign targetting people interested in cycling!

Also - measure measure measure. Where along your path are you loosing people and why?

Simplify your funnel. Every step increases the people you will loose.

Segment your campaign into separate specific audiences with a specific message. At the end sell them the same product. Cupid & People Meet are great examples of this. They have niched out a generic dating offer into a vartiety of segments. But in the end all people still sign up to the same dating backend.

So what are your tricks you use to reduce the lost impressions and clicks?

I'm sensing heavy sarcasm here lol.

1% is considered the "strong" average for e-commerce sales. No way a 1% conversion ratio would be profitable for dating offers on Facebook, PoF or Media buys,
but I do make a good bit of money on a CPS offer witha big payout that converts around 1.5% for me.

But nobody is actually stopping us from capturing the targeted demographics details (such as email addresses) and then perform the up-selling in order to add in more value.

I believe there is no such thing as "one size fits all", and if we are to "customize" our ads to the people of different group of interests, that would be time consuming and the effort spent may not worth the harvest.

I guess that's the reason why majority of us target the demographic as a whole, ie. giving the demographic an identity, and target this identity based on its personality.

yes in case of e- commerce sales its enough i think. because the amount you have sold and the commission that you got is quite good but in case of dating its very low so and the amount of commission is also very low.
BTW can you tell me the average conversion rate of Dating offers?
thanks
