Outing 1 of my top offers in 2012: Thumbplay (here's some tips)!

Over the last couple months i've been running the Thumbplay mobile offer in full force. I've split tested EVERYTHING including the sun and the moon. Here's some tips without outing my whole campaign

1. Split test all their landing pages
You may brush that off, but boy did it make a difference when 1 of the pages did 3x better for me on some of the traffic i was running it on.

2. If you make a landing page: create urgency!
You'll have to get it approved by them, otherwise they'll kick you in the ass and probably not pay. So make sure you don't go overboard on the urgency thing, just write something subtle and nice that Thumbplay will approve so you can start running.

3. Depending on your traffic you'll see that direct linking DOES do better.
I think i was running on 9 different traffic sources that were stable. 4 were direct linked, 5 used landing pages. Depends on the type of traffic your buying and ofcourse the angle.

4. The page is a 2 click flow with a checkbox. Meaning users just have to click twice to opt in. This makes it an easy conversion with the right incentive.

5. Your ads provide the incentive! Think people only want rihanna ringtones? Think again fools, people want Game of Throne ringtones, mp3 tones, sound effects from Shrek, and hearing Lady Gaga moan backstage as she prepares her vocal chords for her show. There are many type of ringtones, don't limit yourself to pop artists.

6. One of my biggest tricks was to split test the networks. I'm not sure why but it converted wildly different on some networks. -- All networks have different links for each carrier, and different landing pages for each carrier. So if you find something close to breaking even or greater, split test it!

I think that covers most of it without ruining my own campaign, fire away any questions you have and I'll answer any that do not threaten my campaign!

Little bit of screenshot incentive

That's the shit right there.

Wow $78k in less than 7 days. Insane. THanks for the share!

@stackman - What was the adspend to generate the $78k in commissions?

Are you running direct? What are you cvr for lp vs dl?

So much gold. Thanks. Hopefully one day i'll be sharing my successful campaigns back again

@luscioust
Roughly $30k and a lot of hours to manage multi-traffic sources

@google
Rather not share, but cvr was much higher with a landing page (which is usually a given). Its just about the angle your using to convert, also where the traffics coming from. ie: a lander may be of more use with WIFI traffic since the viewer is sitting at home most likely in a more relaxed state

what kind of hosting do you use for your landing page to make sure it loads fast enough? I know some host arent quick enough for mobile. What would you recommend? Is wiredtree good enough? Or is there any specific one you use?

Very shocked Thumbplay allowed any landers, especially ones promising Lady Gaga moaning, which I'm fairly sure is not in their catalogue

Keep up the good work.

If you can keep it static. If you can keep it static then you can put it all on a CDN which is going to make it as fast as you can possibly get it. Keep file sizes down, images at a minimum, etc.

If you want to pass through some sort of data it's going to depend on the handset you want to use. If it supports Javascript or not. If it does support javascript you can host the javascript on a CDN without any need for server side dev stuff. Then caputre you GET fields in the Javascript and pass to your tracking with a call in javascript as well.

Thanks!

@rafael3000

I ran on all system platforms, but it did favor android the most.

Honestly I would test any and all ad networks you can get your hands on or currently have accounts already setup with and optimize from there. Ad network with most traffic doesn't always yield the best results. You may find you get 50% less impressions from another network, but ROI is 2x or more than top serving (impressions) network. Get in where you can, test and optimize!

This may seem like a stupid question but other than opt-in and coreg stuff I don't have much experience with mobile.

Are you targeting based on broad keywords (lady gaga, game of thrones, etc) or somehow targeting specific sites??
I haven't been able to get much traffic with keywords since it is search based which is why I'm asking.

Awesome insight, stackman! Curious about this as well, were you running RON or keyword-specific targeting?
