pata33's PPV Follow Along

Yo!

I have been” dabbling” in Affiliate Marketing for longer than I’d like to admit with varying, often little success. I have had some good campaigns before, but struggle to make a consistent “living” from my efforts. Historically, I have been a PPC guy. However, in this follow along, I will be using Pay per View as a traffic source. I have had the least success with the whole “PPV to CPA offers” thing, than with anything else.
So here we go……….

Day One
Offer: Gift Card – Zip Submit
Traffic Source: Lead Impact
Approach: Split Test 2 Landing Pages (Merchant page not a good size for DL)
Targets: 25 unique URLs
93 URL targets after “Imploding” select URLs
Spend: $4.58 (from LI – more than listed below)
Gross: $8.00
Profit/loss: +$3.82

Numbers: As tracked by Prosper

• 91% of all pops and 100% of conversions (all 4) came from 1 target
• LP – 1 out performed in both CTR and Conversion

If this trend is consistent for day 2, I will …
• Dump LP-2 and create a new version for split testing
• Place the dominating target into its own campaign and run the current campaign as well (with out it)

Questions:
What is a good Landing page CTR to shoot for
When do you consider the winner to be “statistically significant” – How long do I wait to dump the loser?

Next:
Today I noticed a 2nd target starting to dominate pops. At second look I left it was not very targeted, so I paused it.

I will be launching (submitting to LI) a new (unrelated) campaign later today.

Waiting on approval of offer from manager for a future campaign.

Off to a decent start! Will be following this.

Day Two

Spend:
$5.66 (from LI – more than listed below)
Gross: 0
Profit/loss: ($5.66)

Day 2 Numbers: As tracked by Prosper

Bummer! – No Conversions today.
• However, Landing Page 1 is a clear winner (in terms of CTR)
• Two Day CTR totals --- LP-1 = 16.2%, LP-2 = 7.28%

Actions:
• I paused Landing Page 2, and will send 100% of traffic to LP-1
• Will create a new LP version over the weekend
• Today, 48% of all pops came from 1 target (including all .com, .co, .c, ….versions) as opposed to 91% yesterday.
• I have decided not to isolate it to its own campaign for now.
• Submitted a new campaign to LI (another short form – gift card) – Targets not approved by end of business day.

Questions:
• Anyone have advice on when to pull a target out of one campaign and place it in its own? As I’ve explained. I have 1 target that is getting most of the clicks and all the conversions. By itself, it is profitable. However, because it dominates, the other targets don’t have enough data to “make a call”.
When do you “peel and stick” a target?

Next:
• Should have two campaigns running tomorrow
• Have a third almost ready to submit to LI
• Will create a new lander

Day 3

I woke up to find an approval email from Lead Impact and was able to submit my next campaign in the afternoon (trying to commit to launching at least 1 campaign a day). By days end I had 3 campaigns running through lead impact, each rotating two landing pages.

Campaign 1: Gift Card – Zip Submit
Spend: $5.36
Gross: $2.00
Profit/loss: ($3.36)

Numbers: As tracked by Prosper

• I did pause LP-2, so all traffic went to LP-1
• My CTR has dropped steadily each day. Not sure if the limited targets I have are getting “blind” to it
• Again 50% of all pops came from 1 target
• Over all (last 3 days) I am at a loss of $3.80. So no reason to panic yet. I will need to examine the numbers on specific targets and try to find some new / additional ones.
---------------------------------------------

Campaign 2: Another Gift Card – Zip Submit
Spend: $4.54
Gross: $2.74
Profit/loss: ($1.79)

Numbers: As tracked by Prosper

• This is a very similar offer to Campaign 1 ( In terms of actual offer, targets and angle).
• I have 38 unique targets and a total of 68 including all the variations
• Like my other campaign 1 target is dominating
• It received almost 100% of pops (225 of 227) and only 1 conversion
• I will let this target go for 1 more day, if high pop / low conversions continue, I will shut it off
---------------------------------------------

Campaign 3: Medical related offer
Spend: $2.98
Gross: $0
Profit/loss: ($2.98)

Numbers: As tracked by Prosper

• This is campaign started towards the end of the day, so not much action
• This is an offer I run successfully with PPC, so I thought I would see what happened if I gave it a go with PPV.
• Numbers……Not so Great!
• 67% of all pops came from 1 target. I seem to have this “problem” a lot.
• I was cautious to add this target in the first place. I knew it got tons of traffic and was a little too broad and general to my offer, so at the end of the day I paused it.

Next:
• Need to examine my targets for all campaigns and see which ones need to be eliminated.
• Perhaps find some new targets
• Re-think my “angles” to my offers.
• And.... I got to re-build that deck today
.
Questions:
• How fast should I expect my CTR to dive when using the same landing page for the same offer on the same target?
• What do others do to prevent this CTR drop from happening?

Day 4 and 5 (Saturday – Sunday)
The weekends are challenging for me to get real work done, as I have many more competing priorities. I did not get a chance to post, so here are the numbers for the last two days.

Day 4
Campaign 1: Gift Card – Zip Submit
Spend: $4.74
Gross: $4.00
Profit/loss: ($0.74)

Numbers: As tracked by Prosper

Campaign 2: Another Gift Card – Zip Submit
Spend:
Gross: $4.34
Profit/loss: ($4.34)

[B]Numbers:B] As tracked by Prosper

Campaign 3: Medical related offer
Spend: $4.30
Gross: 0
Profit/loss: ($4.30)

Numbers: As tracked by Prosper

-------------------------------------------------

Day 5
Campaign 1: Gift Card – Zip Submit
Spend: $4.94
Gross: 0
Profit/loss: ($4.94)

Numbers: As tracked by Prosper

Campaign 2: Another Gift Card – Zip Submit
Spend: $2.86
Gross: 0
Profit/loss: ($2.86)

Numbers: As tracked by Prosper

Campaign 3: Medical related offer
Spend: $0.98
Gross: $0
Profit/loss: ($0.98)

Numbers: As tracked by Prosper

----------------------------------------------------------

• Feeling a little “Can’t see the forest through the trees” lately. Mostly because it’s harder for me to stay on top of things over the weekend. But also because I still lack strong “systems” for managing campaigns, checking / updating numbers and making sense out of everything.

• Because I was feeling disconnected, I paused all campaigns Sunday night, until I could look more closely at the numbers in the morning (today).

• Using Besmir’s rule of….”As a rule of thumb you need to spend 3x the payout on each url before cutting it out.” , I took a close look at each target (Got from reading LoneOak’s Follow Along - Crash course - PPV -- 0------->$100/day).

Actions: Campaign 1 - Gift Card – Zip Submit
• Need to created a new Lander – hope to do tonight
• My one “dominating” target for this campaign is actually several because I am bidding on different string combinations (.com, .co,…). Oddly, they are performing very different from each other. Not sure if I should be evaluating them as a whole or individually.
For now, I will treat them separately – keeping 2 and pausing 2.
• Also, I think I need to add a few more targets.

Actions: Campaign 2 – Another Gift Card – Zip Submit
• Need to created a new Lander here as well
• There was only one target that met the 3x the payout rule. Sadly, it is the target where I got my 1 and only conversion, but was – ROI, so I paused it.
• Just need to let it run again without that target and with a new lander

Actions: Campaign 3
• The numbers here are woeful! But I still think there is hope.
• The payout is higher, and as such, it may not be practical right now to spend 3x the payout on all targets.
• Also, there is a BIG problem with the tracking I need to figure out.
• This campaign will remain pause for now.

Question:
• When evaluating targets for ROI, should I be evaluating the following domains separately or as a whole?
domain.com, domain.co, domain.c, domain.

Thanks,
Hope to hear some feedback soon.

Day 6 and 7

Day 6
All campaigns remained paused as I dug through the numbers and targets looking for what to do.

Actions:
Campaign 1 - Gift Card – Zip Submit: Created 2 new landing pages. Rotating 3 total
Campaign 1 - Gift Card – Paused 2 targets and added some new ones
Campaign 2 – Another Gift Card – Created new landing page
Campaign 2 – Another Gift Card – – Paused 1 target (spent 3x the payout – negative ROI)
New Campaign – Restaurant Card – Zip Submit. All ready to go, but advertiser pulled down site for “scheduled maintenance”. I expect it will be up again soon.

• Watched the Venus Transit across the Sun - Fuckin’ AWSOME!

Day 7
I decided to use the suggestions from the 40 day guide for optimizing targets (for the sake of consistency).

----------------From 40 Day Guide---------------------
● 50% payout, no clicks: Pause any targets with spend of 50% x offer payout, or,
around 50 views, and no clicks
● 100% payout, no conversions: Pause any target with spend of 100% x offer payout,
or, around 100 views, and no conversions
● 100+ views, -50% ROI (loss): Pause any targets with 1 or more Conversions, at
least 100 views, and ROI of -50% or less
● 100+ views, 50% ROI (profit): For targets with Conversions and 50% or higher ROI,
look at whether you can get more traffic by bidding higher. Calculate your Earnings
Per View (Revenue / Views) and increase your bids for that keyword to a max of
about 75% of the EPV.
------------------------------------------------------------------

Campaign 1- Gift Card Gift Card – Zip Submit
Spend: $6.22
Gross: $4.00
Profit/loss: ($2.22)

Campaign 2: Another Gift Card – Zip Submit
Spend: $3.24
Gross: $0.00
Profit/loss: ($3.24)

Day 7 Numbers: As tracked by Prosper

Actions:
Campaign 1 - Gift Card – Zip Submit: Paused 2 targets based on rules above (1 URL, 1 KW)
Campaign 1 - Gift Card – Zip Submit: Killed LP-1. It had its day.

Campaign 2 – Another Gift Card – Zip Submit: Paused 1 target. Realized it was just redirecting to another target I had already paused.
Campaign 2 – Another Gift Card – Zip Submit: After pausing some targets, I did not reach my $5 daily limit. I need to add more targets.

New Campaign 1: Waiting for merchant site to finish site maintenance. Everything set up and ready; including 2 landing pages, tracking, and approved targets at Lead Impact.
New Campaign 2: Taking a spin on the classic “stackman – Bieber” landing page idea. Hope to launch soon.

Day 11? - Not sure anymore

OK…. I know I have not posted in a few days, but I have been busy. I have launched 3 new campaigns since my last post and still have 2 of the original 3 running. Traffic volume is pretty low and seems to get lower each day for my longer running campaigns.

I have been pausing / deleting targets based on the rules from the 40 day guide (listed in a post above as well) and have added new targets to these campaigns as well. The numbers don’t look so good, this I know. So….

Here is a Question……..
Assuming I am getting some conversions, do I continue to evaluate a campaign target by target?
For example, you can see from the numbers below that with campaign 1, I am at a net loss of -$15.72 on an offer that only pays $2.00. However, I have eliminated the targets responsible for most of this negative ROI. Also, this campaign has 13 conversions and my daily net loss is trending down. At this point do I say… My net loss is 8X the payout and kill it? Or…. See that I am eliminating bad targets, I do have conversions and the daily losses are trending down so I should keep it going.
What would you do?

OK…. Lets look at the numbers.
Today, I am going to do things a little different. Below are the campaign totals, instead of the most recent day.

Campaign 1 - Gift Card – Zip Submit: Been Running 10 days
Campaign 2 – Another Gift Card – Zip Submit: Been Running 8 days

Campaign 3 – Medical related offer: – Ran for 3 days – Lots-o-Problems (see above). Will remain paused.

The New campaigns
Campaign 4 – Free Dr Dre Headphones: – Running for 2 days
This campaign has been through a lot in 2 days. I started with a lander inspired by the “stackman – Bieber” post. My first attempt was admittedly HORRIBLE. So I quickly changed it to something (potentially) much cooler and relevant. I also made a 2nd lander for split testing. These two new landers are now running but are not represented in the graphic below. I also accidently paused ALL targets in stead of the one I intended, so the numbers are even lower than they should be. Here the are…….

Campaign 5 – GameStop Gift Card: - Running 2 days – only 1 lander (low volume – need more targets)

Total Numbers – All Campaigns...
Over the last 10 Days....
5 different offers
6 different "Angles"
12 Landing Pages (3 more currently running)
And Lots and Lots of confusion!

Thoughts? Ideas? Encouragement? Anything at all?.....

Hey Gang...

I'm not sure what I am doing wrong, but each day things seem to get a little worse than the day before.
My CTRs keep falling as do my conversion rates.

I am also having a prosper subid tracking problem. It seems that sometimes Peerfly captures the subid and sometimes it does not. This includes subids that have converted. Prosper is generating them. However, sometimes prosper does not even show a click through on subids that Peerfly shows as converted. For now, my volume is low enough that I can take the ip address of converted clicks in Peerfly (that have no subid) and search for them on the "Visitors" tab in Prosper. Once found, I take the subid from there and add it to the "update subids" tab.

I don't understand how this happens. Other times the exact same tracking URL shows a click through in prosper, passes the subid and it is captured by Peerfly. I have traced the process and of course when I test from my computer it passes correctly every time.

Anyone got a clue?

Now, back to our story...
For the last 3 and 1/2 days, I got ZERO conversions.
So, I paused all campaigns. I'm taking a step back and trying to figure out what to do next.

Frustrated!! - Not giving up!!!
More to come shortly..........

Subbed in, great log, i would take the lp you had woring best for you and A/B split test to try and get the highest lp ctr possible.

06-13-2012 02:46 AM #11 pata33 (Member)

Thanks spamalot.

The problem was that the highest ctr page fell a little bit each day until it got 0 clicks. The ones I was testing against it never got up to where the original was.
Not sure what happened. Maybe I do not have enough targets and people got sick of seeing it.

06-15-2012 05:16 AM #12 pata33 (Member)

OK......
I adjusted some things and relaunched one of my campaigns with two new landers.
I will be launching another tomorrow.

Results to follow.

06-19-2012 09:27 PM #13 pata33 (Member)

OK - I'm back again. Here is what's been going on.....

Campaign: Free Head Phones – Angle 1
Spend: $11.46 (from LI – more than listed below)
Gross: $0
Profit/loss: -$11.46

5 Days of Data: As tracked by Prosper

Although each of my targets has not been tested according to the 3x the payout rule, I think that the numbers of the total campaign suggest … Somethin’ ain't right!

Total Numbers: 11 Days (not including today)
Spend: $29.92
Gross: $0
Profit/loss: -$29.92
Overall CTR: 1.6%

I think my “angle” is off or a little “reaching”. So, before I completely throw it out, I will try one last adjustment.

Actions
• Create at least 1 new landing page
• Find some new, differently focused targets.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Campaign: Free Head Phones – Angle 2 – Brand Focused
Spend: $3.26 (from LI – more than listed below)
Gross: $2.00
Profit/loss: -$1.26

4 Days of Data: As tracked by Prosper

This campaign shows some potential, but the traffic volume is REALLY, REALLY LOW!! Obviously, I need more targets, so I will try to focus on review pages, other pages where people can buy the item as well as pages of competitors.

Actions:
• Find and submit more targets as described above.

Next:
Clearly, I have lost some momentum and motivation. So….. I need to get on the ball and keep launching campaigns.

• Tweaking my original “GameStop” campaign from earlier. It only got 54 pops total, so I never gave it a fair chance. I just paused it in the throes of my “Nothing is Working Fit" I had last week.
• Peruse Peerfly offers for my next few campaigns.
• Look closely at my tracking - something seems wrong here.
Keep myself motivated!

Until next time.......
