Can iPads (and other tablets) track cookies?

Hey STMers,

Just wondering if you know if iPads, and other tablet devices, adequately track cookies?

Thanks in advance!

I'm no expert on this, but i believe it's dependent on the browser rather than the actual device. So (from what i understand) cookies should function as normal with Safari, Opera Mini, Dolphin, etc. but they may or may not work w/ other browser apps. I'd also appreciate any further insights into this!

Cookies are switched on by default on the ipad/iphone if you use the build in browser

I doubt apps have access to your cookies

Okay. So generally, there's no problems with tracking affiliate sales/conversions on tablets?

Thanks

The default settings for Safari on iOS allow cookies from domains that have been visited, but not third party cookies. As long as the cookie is being dropped by the tracking domain (in that circumstance iOS considers the cookie to be first party) then pixel tracking should be fairly accurate with iOS devices. If the user has changed their cookie settings in Safari or is using a different browser then there could be issues, but it's usually a pretty small percentage.

Other tablets though, it's a case by case basis. Android is spotty with cookie tracking. Ask if the advertiser can get set up on server to server tracking if possible.

apparently "Some customers have reported problems accessing the website since the latest update issued for Safari on iOS devices (iPhone/iPad). It appears that this update by Apple has turned cookies off by default."

Like Cole said, its better to check with the advertiser to make sure they have server tracking set up for that campaign. Usually, campaigns clearly marked as MOBILE / WAP by networks do have server tracking in place. A campaign that is predominantly a desktop campaign, that says it 'also' accepts mobile traffic, but is not mobile optimized, I would be cautious about.
