Reaching My Goal of $1,000,000 Revenue
Note: One of my main traffic sources is now available to all via ZeroPark.com (more info)
I've been in Affiliate Marketing for around 3 years now, but early last year I fell into a slump, quit my job and became a fruitless bum for around 4 months.
Once I finally got my sh*t together, I knew I wanted to start my own business but at the same time I didn't want to take any sort of loan. The only weapon at my disposal was my knowledge of affiliate marketing. Knowing how to motivate myself, I challenged myself to seeing how quickly I could make a $1,000,000 revenue utilizing my existing skills.

It took me around 10 months to hit that $1 Million Dollah mark starting at 0, you can see I also hit my first $20k/day+ April 1st, heck yes.
I'm posting this to help motivate anyone who might be in a motivational slump, or for someone looking for proof of what's possible in AM starting from 0 - I have this screenshot saved on my desktop to remind me what I'm capable of when I have a concrete goal to strive towards.
I've since started a successful company, and I'm launching my new ad network beginning of next month. I find that setting goals, as simple as they may be, helps me achieve the aggressive growth that keeps me motivated.. nobody likes stagnation!

Either you own the sites or you get sites to sign up and get paid for showing ur ads.
The only problem is that u need advertisers in order to get websites in your network but you need websites to get advertisers.

Hmm...I have zero knowledge about building ad networks. But I'm planning to start an ad network after I scale up to the next level, so I have some theories lol...
Get into a big traffic exchange like Right Media, build your network with their API so that your advertisers can buy inventory through your network, offer cool features in your interface like what Sitescout does, once you get big advertisers it becomes easy to get big publishers. Go after brand advertisers, but offer all the tools that direct response marketers need. Brands love a network where they can "measure" stuff - they'll be like whoa we can measure this shit...
I'm just talking out of my ass...would love to read what the OP or anybody with experience has to say about this!

If you have a decent plan, and something cool to offer to the industry, and if you can create a lot of buzz in the right circles (think techcrunch, mashable, etc), you get the opportunity to expand your business with VC monies

I'm also a domainer from background, first months I started out with domain traffic, leased traffic + built up my portfolio. Mid December is when I started my first media buy (had never used a banner before that!) - in the end it's what allowed me to scale.

Yeah around Nov 14th, my top offer took a hit - it's always difficult going down once you tasted a new level of growth!

That is not an easy question, and I probably don't have the answer for you. For me, it just took time - I got sick of doing nothing and realized I'm far more happy in life being productive and having something to strive towards! Once I got a small taste of success, the familiar flavor had me hooked again!

My next goal is big - but it'll be in other areas of Internet Marketing.

I use CPVLab (will be moving to my own software soon) - that screenshot happens to be from the main ad network I work with.

This used to be a mystery for me too!
Essentially you could start an ad network plugged into various RTB media exchanges like RightMedia or AdNexus - this I know less about.
What I'm doing is starting a network based on a relatively unknown source of traffic - domains (a lot more traffic than you might think - Google earns 2-3% of its yearly revenue off of domain traffic via leasing it's ad feed to parking companies - that's around $1 billion / year )
I will drop the name when it's officially open to Advertisers and out of Beta testing so you can check it out

I do a lot of media buying thru companies that work with Right Media, AdNexus and other exchanges, but that's pretty much where my knowledge ends, from the experience I've had. Judging by the number of media buy networks out there, I don't think it's that difficult to integrate - the trick as lifetweak underlined, is getting that advertiser base - many of them run their own offers to fill demand, if you're able to do that, it's a good base to start!

This is true, however I am a huge believer in execution 95% and idea 5%. If you have the tools/team/skills that make you confident in execution, there's nothing that can stop you. As for VC monies or other investor cash - I'm lucky enough to have created a situation where I am self-funded. Having worked at a start-up prior to my fruitless bum stage - I know first hand what it is like to deal with 5 different investors, utter hell!

This is revenue from media buys/domains - the graph is a screenshot from an affiliate network. The ad network is going live early June

When I leased, I would contact domainers direct and sign deals for 6 months+ paying them more than they'd make on Parking, often times, typo domains are blocked by Google, so the owners cannot monetize them via Parking, unless it's a Yahoo or Bing feed.. but they're relatively poor in performance.

Purely CPA, in terms of verticals I focused on sweepstakes offers.

Certainly an interesting area to gain some knowledge..I know domaining was pretty famous before all pop traffic comes in. ( i might be wrong).
So you lease those generic domains (e.g. carinsurance, hotels, jewellry .com etc etc) and redirect to your CPA offers right?

Domaining is still a huge market - in fact it is only growing.
I would buy or lease domains, and then redirect the visitors to my landing pages, that's correct.

Hey Guys,
Just FYI, it's taken over a year to develop... but finally one of my main traffic sources is now available to all on my new self-service platform ZeroPark.com
Read a bit more here if you're interested in a new traffic: http://stmforum.com/forum/showthread...visitors-month
Cheers,
Robert

Haven't been around much on the STM forums lately, just a quick $ motivating screen from one of the networks I work with, yeah yeah I know you know which one

In case you're wondering, the drop is due to me working with more affiliate networks, and more importantly promoting new verticals other than sweeps.
Diversify in every way that you can!

In the beginning yes, my revenues were growing as I bought more domains. As of this year, I don't monetize traffic on zeropark.com because we have enough demand from our active advertisers.
I mainly do media arbitrage via display now.
