Media Buying, Ask Me Anything Pt. 2

I had a minute today and figured I'd follow up our popular thread with another AMA...

As long as its not super personal and semi on topic, I'll try to answer it....

Questions about Subway are still allowed...

Would love to hear a mini-history of media buying from your perspective, eg can you explain how you've seen the field evolve over the years and what you think the future holds?

+ best strategies for new entrants for initial test campaigns.

How do you do media buying for verticals that seem to really perform well on Search? I have a bunch of sites that convert great off targeted traffic, but I don't know how they would work on media. Is it even possible?

That's a loaded question, I don't know the history of media buying. But from my perspective, here's what's happened:

Personally, when I started buying media, a lot of the tools that exist today and platforms didn't exist. There was no sitescout, there wasn't WhatRunsWhere and the other cohort of tools. As the recession hit, brands stopped spending, media became super cheap and affiliate offers reigned. As the economy started recovering, brand spending came back and pushed the weaker affiliates out of big buys, leaving the pro's to do what they did best...

Best strategy... Do research, go to sitescout, test some direct sites, figure out what works, cut out the middle man and scale...

For sure it is. The secret is direct site buys. Niche stuff won't work super well on general buys, but if you figure out niche sites to advertise on, they can deliver a HUGE roi for small spends..

I would like to know what kinds of sites suit "win gift" offers (like win ipad 2 email submit or pin submit or penny auction offers) very well?

Thanks!

Main question would be how do you work to get approvals on some of the verticals with rebills like diet and skin

Matt, aren't Direct site buys hard to manage? The publisher might not accept CC as payment and whats the guarantee that they do not display our ads to fewer people than we paid for?
