Newb struggling to understand subIDs, can anyone please help me!!

So I am finally getting my stuff together and have decided to plunge into the wonderful world of PPV, have got a VPS and prosper set up and am just waiting on approvals now so should be up and running in the next few.
My one problem is in trying to figure out subIDs, I have read the tutorial on prosper (what happened to the vids?), have searched the forum, looked on youtube and asked my affiliate mgrs.. to no avail. Their info was along the lines of "subIDs are useful for tracking so you can track conversions etc."... yeah no shit haha.. they are obviously not used to dealing with this level of newness lol..
I guess I am missing a fundamental point but I just cannot see it. I am assuming at this point that subIDs will allow me to see which URL/keyword I am bidding on is bringing the sales.
I am trying to test out an offer from ClickBooth, running traffic from LI.
Are subIDs necessary if I have placed a tracking pixel with my network?
Finally what is subID syntax all about ie. what is the difference to standard subIDs?
Apologies in advance for the basic and long-winded questions but like I said I just can't seem to figure it out, must have a mental issue somewhere lol..
This is the only thing preventing me from launching campaigns, so any help much much appreciated.

OK been investigating this non-stop and think I can summarize all of the above into this question:
In prosper I add the subid placeholder at the end of my affiliate url. In LeadImpact I need to enable Keyword Pass-Through.
Is this correct?

A subid is different from keyword tracking.
Best thing to do is read through the 40 day guide where all this is explained (link in my sig)
