My 1st Attempt at Mobiles (29)

My 1st Attempt at Mobiles

Hey Everyone,

I went ahead and put my pride to the side and followed the advice of the Big Dogs here to start a Follow Along. I'm hoping this will help me get it right without most of the bumps to the head.

Oh Yeah! Shout out to the Angry Russian for the 14 Day Mobile Guide!

As the title implies, the is my first rodeo (I've been in Texas too long). I have been successful in the past with Dating on FB and PoF. I have yet to get a niche outside of dating to work. So this will be more than one 1st timer for me.

I joined STM a few days ago and read as much as I could during that time. But, I think I've done enough reading, now it's time to shit or get off the pot so to speak.

I have pretty thick skin so, if it'll help me improve as an affiliate...Let me have it!

Now, on to the subject at hand:
I just 10 minutes ago, submitted 6 ads for ThumbPlay (US) to JumpTap. I really could care less if the leaches compete against me on this one. It's ALL about learning right now!

The banners that I'm using are the ones provided by the network (NeverBlue). They had a bunch to chose from, so I picked 6 that are totally different. I used 300x50 and 216x36.

Here are the settings that I used on the ads:

I have no idea how long they take to approve/deny the ads being this is my first time. I read that someone had a rep to speed up the process so if anyone can direct me to one it would be greatly appreciated.

ANY and ALL suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

Good luck, I'll be checking back to see how things are going. I've been interested in trying mobile but haven't yet.

Thanks a lot! I'm gonna need it.

OK, Update!

I really don't think that there is anything else that I could've done wrong with that campaign!

1st off...I had the tracking all screwed up so I didn't get any data to work with. Also, I definitely should not have bid CPM. With there being 6 untested ads running it killed my $25 daily budget in I'm thinking, minutes! I checked on the approval status earlier and they were still awaiting a reviewer. I went back about an hour later and it said that I didn't have anymore of my daily budget available. WTF?

Here are the stats if anyone is interested:

Impressions: 50,000
Clicks: 116 (the network shows 131) I have NO idea how it could be more than what JT is showing.
Conversions: 0
Spend: $25
Revenue: $0
ROI: -100%
The avg CTR was 0.2% The best ad was 0.3 - I would've killed for that CTR on FB!

I'm glad I did this while people were at adTech. LOL. Good thing my budget was only $25. I did learn a few things in the process so this next offer should have somewhat of a chance.

hey dude for jumptap it's not easy to get a higher CTR, especially when you're just starting out.. So definitely DO NOT start with CPM in jumptap.. but in other traffic sources the same sets of banners migth give you a 1% CTR which at that case go for CPM for sure...

04-05-2012 07:06 PM #8 seanstacks (Member)

I did a little research and figured out why the offer bombed so bad...It's limited to the top 4 US carriers and I sent it to all carriers in the US. I'm willing to bet that most of the traffic came from where I didn't want it to. Ofcourse, since I didn't set up the tracking, I will never know.

Ok, this time I'm going to track, target and bid correctly! About to submit the new campaign. Will keep you posted.

A little update for those of you that are following:

I've submitted two new campaigns using the same offer (ThumbPlay ATT- NeverBlue)
Here are the specifics of it:
2 Campaigns
ATT ONLY
Bidding CPC: $0.10
Android Phones and Tablets 1 campaign; Feature phones/Blackberry/Windows Mobile in the other
US ONLY
$25 Daily Limit
Direct to URL
Mobile Websites and Apps
3 banners (ads) each. Sizes 300x50 and 216x36
Prosper202 for tracking. For the advance subids (c1,c2,c3,c4) I used:
C1 = JT_CAMPAIGN
C2 = JT_HANDSET
C3= JT_OPERATOR
C3= JT_SITE

Now I wait for the approvals. It only took 12 hours yesterday.

tablets and ringtones.

hmm...

04-06-2012 03:08 PM #14 seanstacks (Member)

Yeah guys, thanks but I figured since they have videos, games and graphics I'd try it out by including the tablets.

If anyone else sees something I may have missed, PLEASE, let me know. I'd rather learn from you guys tearing me a new one than with wasted funds and time.

Don't be afraid to make "mistakes".

Tablets and ringtones definitely sounds "far out" but I have seen much stranger things work. Tablet traffic is VERY underrated. There's a lot of it and its cheap.

People still download ringtones on their PCs...

Hey @seanstacks, try banners that aren't on the network as they're probably overused...
Also, is the campaign smartphone only? If not, you might want to create a feature phone campaign for ringtones...

I almost didn't do this Follow Along just because of that. I was afraid I would mess something up and people would try to make me feel stupid. And I'm sure that's what stops a lot of people from being more active and vocal here. That is the reason that I don't post on forums like WF. I really appreciate that input!

04-07-2012 05:49 PM #19 seanstacks (Member)

Thanks liane! That's something that I wondered about. BUT...Surprisingly I got some pretty good CTRs with them. I was thinking that I would end up having to create my own. I'm more open to creating my own now, so that I can get better at it.

I'm with deondup, i think it's a good idea to try something different. If it works you'll be ahead of the competition
I definitely suggest making your own creatives, where's the campaign currently at?

04-07-2012 08:42 PM #21 seanstacks (Member)

Here's an update:

2 of the 3 banners in the Android campaign were approved.
1 of the 3 in the Feature campaign was approved. One of the disapproved was .jpg and it was axed for "Stobing Effects not limited to 3 loops" WTF? I thought only Gifs were animated. They approved it in the other campaign tho. SMH

Spend: $25
CTR: .04% (Better than the last attempt!) Feature Phones campaign did not get any traffic due to 2 of the 3 ads being disapproved
Revenue: $0 NOT 1 LEAD

I have a serious problem with click loss. JT shows 107, Prosper shows 85 and NeverBlue shows 60. That's a 44% loss in clicks I have no idea where they are going. If someone could help me figure this one out it would be greatly appreciated. I think even with 60 clicks making it to the offer, I should have had atleast 1 conversion. I'll worry about that next.

I've heard of people losing click by using prosper. If that is the case, it's dropping them coming in and going out. Ideas anyone?

Don't use prosper (or any tracker) unless you have to. I didn't get profitable on mobile until I cut out tracking middleware.

If you are sending to Neverblue, it's slightly harder to track in the sense that they only support one subid (unless they've fixed that recently), but then again, they do give you loads of mobile related data that other networks do not. Also, you can still put all your Jumptap variables into one subid; just separate them by a comma, and then split them using Excel or similar for you to analyse the data.

SWEET! Thanks man! I was wondering what I was gonna do. I had a feeling Prosper was the problem. Either that or the hosting (HostGator)

I REALLY REALLY don't like Jumptap. The budget will drain in just 10 minutes. Bid Price is very high. And the account Manager will just ignore you unless you spend $250 per day, before that we could not block publisher id, site.

HOW could people be successed using Jumptap when they start?? I don't understand..

Hey David! Who are you using for mobile traffic that you are successful with?

04-09-2012 06:09 PM #26 seanstacks (Member)

Didn't want to go any further until I talked to someone with NeverBlueAds. They confirmed that I shouldn't use Prosper for mobile (thanks again Nick). I'm going to submit more banners today and see how it goes. If I can still get the JT variables to work I'll be good to go. I really want to give this offer the boot but, I need to follow through with this one so that myself and the other newbs following can possible learn something from it.

But so far, what have I learned?

1. Do not use Prosper202 for mobile traffic.
2. Bid CPC during testing
3. Never be afraid to contact your AM for tips and help getting your offers to work. That's what they are there for. If they are not online, give em a call or email!
4. The help offered on these forums are priceless.
5. Tracking is a must! There is no way that you can figure out how to optimize your campaign without it.

Submitted 6 more ads to JT. I should be able to make some decisions as far as this offer goes after this batch of ads. If I still don't get at least one lead I'm gonna switch it for another. I was debating rotating offers, but with the click loss issue I didn't want to complicating things anymore than they were. Will keep you posted!

04-09-2012 08:54 PM #28 seanstacks (Member)

Ads were reviewed and I sent 99 clicks to the offer with 0 leads. I think it is safe to say that this offer may not be a good one.

The click loss lowered to 22% loss from 43% by direct linking. At .10 a click that can kill a campaign I think. Here of some getting their Reps to lower the bid, but I don't have one just yet.

04-09-2012 09:16 PM #29 grieve (Member)

^ Make sure you didnt make any block on pubs before you lower bids because site AAA converted 2% at .10$ might convert 40% at .04$, i learned this from first hand experience, also if u need a way to make all data more organized look into pivot tables, i know its hard at first to make sense of the data.

As for reps, add andrew.m.bennett1 on skype hell lower ur bids and cut bad sites and such
