Twitter Advertising Platform

So I just got off the phone with Michael from Twitter about their advertising platform. For anyone interested in the talk... this is what I got out of it...

  1. They are looking for advertisers to spend over $5k a month, with a 3 month insertion order, didn't answer my question about Out Clauses, and didn't answer my question about what verticals are allowed on twitter. (was in a rush as is and didn't press him to answer these)
  2. There are 2 MAIN methods they are going to have: 1- Promoted Accounts and 2- Promoted Tweets
    1. Promoted Accounts: Target based on keyword, interest, and/or country. Pay only for followers & retweets. Says there is a 90% follwer retention rate...
    2. Promoted Tweets: this is similar to simple CPA method, post a tweet, someone clicks, the click takes them to wherever you want (lander, offer, etc..)
  3. You will pay on an "engagement" basis, meaning for ever follower, retweet, click, not on impressions.
  4. Bids range: .75 - 2.00 is the recommended bid, will only pay .01 more than the person bidding below you
  5. You can target mobile, web, or both together, bid prices won't change

From the conversation we had, it sounded as if they weren't looking for performance advertisers, but for brand agencies, and are asking a 3-month $15k commitment before even seeing the back end of the advertising system.

I am pretty busy as is so I didn't press further for more answers or ask more questions, but if you do want to, I'd ask some of the following:

- Can you target specific people's followers?
- Get an answer to out clauses and verticals?
- How they feel about Affiliates (maybe not in those words?)?

Here is a link he sent me with case studies as well:

I think there is some potential here, but personally I'm not about to sign a 3-month $15k contract right now on an ad platform that may or may not be Aff-friendly... maybe if I had my own product, but for my goals and what I'm trying to do right now, not worth it.

my 2 pennies.

Awesome info.

Shame about the min spend and as usual going after brand advertisers again!!

One day they will learn their lesson! I hope.

Have you played around with sponsored tweets at all?

No I haven't at all, am thinking about different ways to get involved right now but, until I can come up with something I'm staying on the sidelines

I've tried purchasing sponsored tweets via third party platforms, and I could never make anything work. The CTRs would be really low, and those that clicked through did everything under the sun to not convert.

I haven't tried twitter advertising affiliate wise, but through my day job I manage an account. Our terms were $15,000 for the year, so about $1,250 per month, but they wouldn't move on the $15k figure. The only reason they agreed to the longer term was because my account is tied to a larger corporate account, so they had a few hotels signing a year long contract.

Their targeting isn't great yet, especially if you're considering it from an affiliate standpoint. No age or sex targeting, and interests are loosely based on what you type in -- no details about how many people you'll target based on those interests. The only true targeting, other than interests, is location, which is able to be broken down by country and metro area.

Their stats are broken out by Cost Per Engagement/Cost Per Follower, with Engagement meaning everything from someone retweeting your tweet to someone starring/favoriting it, not necessarily a click thru. From my corporate account, it's been a good branding tool, but that's about it.

I have a few screenshots of the platform and can provide more if anyone wants them.
