A couple days ago TechCrunch reported Draw Something was up to 35mil downloads, and 15 mil people using it every day. That kind of scale makes my head spin.
But the Game of the Year last year (tiny tower) has already dropped to #50. Easy come, easy go... owner just sold the company to Zynga for 210M. Good for him.
Hey Martjin thanks for the post.
I've been preaching mobile for almost a year now, I agree this is the biggest wave since FB.
It's bigger then FB in terms of AM opportunity. FB was only one platform, one bunch of rules with a whole tonne of competitors. There are so many mobile ad networks popping up these days it crazy. The coolest part is big volumes of traffic are lot easier to access then on FB.
100k revenue a day? Holy smokes.. I love this game, I play it every day..
I really need to get involved with mobile ASAP by the looks of it.
omg... the number are just mind blowing....
and the 1st one to get wi-fi table traffic to convert will be a 'Mobile God'!
100k a day in revenue question. What were they spending money on each day to keep the app running? I'm sure they were making a lot of money, but I can't imagine that being pure profit every single day. Is there anything you need to spend to keep an app running or no?
Yes they had to invest heavily in their servers to keep it up and running.
Here is a brief article to describe what they did:
http://gigaom.com/cloud/how-omgpop-s...n-three-weeks/
so in summary:
* 0 - 35m users in 3 weeks
* used noSQL db: Couchbase
* cloud hosting (not amazon)
* "many tens of nodes, and many terabytes of data and increased throughout into the tens of thousands of operations per second"
Just updated this post with some more info from a recent Marin Software whitepaper.
