Hey guys,
I been running a dating campaign unsuccessfully on Google Display Network. Spend $3000, made only $500. Let me explain a little more details before anything.
Campaign was Single Parents Meet. Payout was $3. Main problem was i failed to stop ad groups that are having cost per conversion at more than $10. These were the few ad group with most clicks and conversions. Rest of ad groups were not having much impressions n clicks. It was a big mistake. Also failed to exclude certain placements at the start.
Question is how do you guys determine which campaign to run on which traffic source? More specifically i like to know if you guys are running successful dating campaigns on GDN?
I know many of you recommend gg to POF to start with dating offers. But wouldn't so many people gg there spoil the broth?
Hear from you guys soon,
Henry
Look at sites that brought you clicks that didn't convert. Set frequency cap and demographic settings right, exclude categories that you don't need (police & emergency and stuff like that), personally I also exclude all big sites from the start (myspace, youtube, ezinearticles and such: they should be dealt with separately). Analyze which sites converted and where ads were placed. Also on GDN like on any other network different ads convert at different sites. I usually create 2 sets of banners in 5 sizes each + 3 text ads, go "wide" or "broad" first and run for few days. Then try to figure out the trends, delete unperforming adgroups and expand on high-traffic ones. Recently I was running campaign for a client, and was able to lower CPA from about $25/lead to under $10 and then some.. It takes experimenting.
Great tool to use: Wonderwheel scraper (look it up on wickedfire, it's only $25 and is absolutely incredible in scraping thousands of highly related keywords). It takes some excel magic to produce adgroups out of what WS produces, but still...
As far as CPM bidding on GDN and targeting sites directly instead of working with keyword-based adgroups, find the sites/ads with good CTR first, then create separate placements-based campaign and go with CPM (don';t forget to put those placements as negatives in your old campaign though).
hope this quick write-up helped. PM or ask here for more advice on GDN
Nick
...To clarify: by "broad" and "wide" I meant as many different adgroups as possible that each relate to the topic but from different angle. Example: if we were to promote life insurance, I would create adgroups around these topics..
-illnesses
-accidents & traumas
-babies & birth
-extreme sports
-medicaments
-hospitals
-retirement
-buying new house
-work safety...
-funerals
-investment advisors
-life ins. brands (of course)
-car insurance quotes (since people are in the mood of getting that kind of quotes, they might as well..)
-finance calculators (i.e. mortgage or personal loans)
I just came up with these in 5 minutes and these angles may not work at all; I tried to come up with wide variety of topics around the one we target and see if anything shows promising signs.. Another thing: using word "quotes" is DANGEROUS. Your ads will show up on all those lyrics and "love quotes" kind of sites.. It's annoying
Also, ask for a paybump. I know for a fact we get more on single parents meet, not much, but our payout is set at 3.25 on AKMG, but it may help a bit esp if you start pushing volume.
Cut placements fast and adgroups, use a negative site/keyword list to the full effect. Also play around with the type of ads you use, we've found banner ads work amazingly on google content network, but your CTR has to be high there because you're competing against ad blocks with 2-3 ads in them.
You know that in AdWords Editor theres a built in tool that can take 1000s of keywords and throw them into Ad Groups right?
Hey guys thanks for ur input so far.
While i gotten some insights (which i already put in place), my main questions were not answered. They are:
-Question is how do you guys determine which campaign to run on which traffic source?
-More specifically i like to know if you guys are running successful dating campaigns on GDN?
Any advice will be helpful!
Henry
have you used a landing page or direct linking to the offer?
maybe you need to do some split testing on different lps and improve your conversion rate.
Is it allowed to direct link from GDN?
@janie i do direct linking on GDN. I am using the best offer page.
@Hippo, you can direct link on GDN.
@The Angry Russian - "1. You check the traffic source and see what types of offers are being run there. Or you can be the market leader and try something brand new."
I am guessing u meant it as using spy tools, or asking ad reps from the traffic source right?
damn, I need to start using gdn. I thought google's offer only search ads.
what's averrage bids on gdn? and cpc or cpm basic?
What sort of stuff works on GCN? I've been avoiding it as I don't want to get something working only to be banned.
^^ well anything works on GDN if it's OK in Google eyes and doesn't look scammy. They've been banning a lot of stuff lately, so it's not about "what works" - GDN covers at least 70% of sites - more, less - doesn;t matter; they're everywhere. It's about whether the offer looks legit. I heard they banned TruthaboutAbs recently.. As an example. The key to GDN is testing different approaches to keyword-based adgroups to get traffic rolling + writing really stand-out ads. Agressive, bold statements, but not pre-selling. Getting the click is what important, not list features of your service. Let the user use HIS emotions to lead him to your page, not rational thinking. WHen you make them think - you lose them and they don't click. Interest - that's your goal. Emotions will spark and then the mind will follow and riding on his emotions the user will try to explain rationally to himself why he needs to drop everything he's doing and fill that damn form
So... it's an art. But nothing is ideal, it's hard to deal with Google and for north america it's not easy to get quality clicks below $0.5 I'd say. ALthough I don't run 100 campaigns, I can't generalize like that. With good placements and CPM bidding Im sure it's possible to get hundreds of $0.05 clicks a day, depends on a niche really. I've seen $800 clicks on search network and I've seen $0.01 clicks on Adwords search just recently, same for GDN. I hate to say it - but testing is key. Test! Go nuts, test 3-4 ads at a time, test time of the day (duplicate same campaign, day-part it differently), test titles, put special characters in titles, be provocative.. And ye shall be banned from Google! j/k. Good luck to you all
Oh, and test how many kws per adgroup, how relevant/tight/broad they are to one another; Found adgroup that gets tons of impressions? Clone it, change it/add/remove keywords, create similar ones and see if they have same success, experiment!
About the Wonderwheel scraper: hopefully owner will roll out new version that will group keywords, but it can be done manually in Excel: say, you generated X levels. The last level is keywords, X-1 level is adgroup names. then paste it to Adwords editor accordingly... Let me know if you need better explanation, I got to run but I could get into little more details later if anyone's interested.
I just bought the WonderWheel Scraper (this one to be specific, there seem to be a lot of copycats) and the results are a bit questionable. Here are the level 1 results for "dating":

Not terrible, but not great. When you go up to level 2 and beyond they get really irrelevant ("cooking games" for example):

Anyone else have this problem? Can anyone recommend a better keyword scraper?
Thanks!
