okay guys, here's my part of fun.
I decided to run a lil bit of mobile, wasn't really thinking of writing up a follow along for this but the 2-day results ended up quite interesting (not profitable but still...), so that's why i wanted to share this.
Country:
USA
Offers:
Adult friend finder mobile ($6.50)
Benaughty 18+ ($1.20)
Mobile Campaigns Setup
i had 4 campaigns (exact campaign names):
adultdating-us-ios-atnt
adultdating-us-android-atnt
adultdating-us-feature-atnt
adultdating-us-android-cricket
What am i tracking?
carrier
operator
category
headline
adsize
Ad creatives:
First off i have to come clean, there are so many follow alongs here i ended up using a couple of em.. sorry but i'm lazy and my initial thoughts were just to see what happens.. I think i'm going to make my own ads, it has HUGE potential to be profitable as i'm looking it..
I'm only using 2 ads currently both are 300x50
CTR for both ads ranges from 0.6 - 1.20%
adultdating-us-ios-atnt 0.85%
adultdating-us-android-atnt 0.60%
adultdating-us-feature-atnt 0.82%
adultdating-us-android-cricket 1.19%
in this situation analyzing the ads from Carrier and operator perspective, for all campaigns i only used 2 ads.. I'm surprised to see such huge difference on DIFFERENT OPERATOR, but not different carrier....
You guys might wanna start your campaigns with Cricket first if USA.. i dont know??
And btw, all of them have more than a couple hundreds of clicks so the data is definitely enough to tell some stories.
Results:
Spent: $61.27
Revenue: $32.00
Loss: $29.27
About -50% ROI
Breakdown is here,
Benaughty made 5 leads ($6 @ 150 visitors)
Adult Friend Finder made 4 leads ($26 @ 1700 visitors)
Obviously if i super impose Benaughty to 1700~ visitors it would have gotten $60~ which would then help me go very close to breaking even..
That's why i have already switched the offer rotation to 80% for Benaughty in CPVlab.
My Thoughts
I missed 1 day's precise stats due to my tracking, i didn't setup my tokens properly so i could only track down the carrier that gave me those first few leads..
2nd day i rectified it now it's working good so i got the other half of better data..
Image of my stats is attached below, if someone could help me optimize this piece of data?? Thanks!
My Next Step
Now since i have the stats i'm going to first break down the campaigns in CPVlab, so for IOS and Androids I will add in some "Dating Apps Install Offers" into the rotation to see if it will work better..
I won't be doing this in Feature phones due to obvious reasons.
This is 1 thing i'm going to do..
Secondly i would definitely go ahead and whack up more ads and get into testing different offers..
One thing i still couldn't get it is, since i'm bidding CPC for this campaigns... WHY am i aiming for more CTR? To get more inventory? The mobile network doesn't allow CPM bidding..
What are the other things i could do? What are the campaigns i should kill?
Real Quick Result Update:
Spend: $79.07
Revenue: $51.70
ROI: -34%
Which is already better than my earlier update (was at -50%). Seems like i've made a good decision giving more space for Benaughty offer to get more traffic, although the payout is at $1.20/lead while adult friend finder is at $6.5/lead.. But it's obviously giving me a high EPC.
Benaughty EPC: 0.05-0.07
Adult Friend Finder EPC: 0.02 (Which means my clicks has to be lower than 0.01 to make any significant profit.. no good..)
I'm looking for more solid dating offers, and breaking down campaigns with different tracking links for Android/IOS/feature phones so i can also split test "App Installs"..
Optimizing
As said from above, right now i'm just testing different offers.. since i'm bidding on CPC (and i realize the CPC i pay is EXACTLY what they'll charge me for.. so i lowered my CPC by 20-40% to see if it will affect my inventory traffic.. if not then tat's the extra margin i'll get..
What else can i test?
How do we test with a Mobile Lander? any reference for this?
I'm still trying to make sense out of my tracked data in CPVlab..
Joe
Have you tried running without cpvlab? With mobile a fast redirect is important. Did you test your cpvlab tracking redirect time versus direct tracking response time? Could be the difference between being profitable or not.
Thanks NissanGTR.. Sweet idea. I would definitely try that! Once i got the metrics up, like which carrier + operator + ad combo works best i'd definitely go direct with it without tracking links..
More Updated Results (+ Good News!)
Spend : $123.66
Revenue : $89.75
P/L : $33.91
ROI : -27%
So my ROI is still in red, and it's just slightly better than my previous update (was at -34%).
BUT, that's not my point. Thing is, I found out which carrier was making the dough.... Hehehehe...
What I did
- I break down my stuff into 3 major campaigns (IOS, Feature, Android), while in each campaigns i use different tokens in CPVlab to split test operators.
- I split tested heavily on the offers (same offers different networks, different offers same networks, etc etc)
What I found out
- I found out one of the carrier that's making the dough....
- I found out which offers are HITTING it.. And you'd be surprise how much difference just split testing the SAME offer on different networks.. I was shocked by the results..
Conclusion For Today
I'm still in the red but 1 of the carrier is QUICKLY closing the loss gap and i predict it will turn profit latest tomorrow.. This is with the combo of 2 hard hitting offers after some split testing..
But i can't guarantee the profit until i really look at the stats tomorrow, don't wanna get too excited myself..
And the thing is, I have not started making NEW ads to optimize CTRs.. I have not duplicate it into other mobile sources.. I have not looked into landers... So many things i could do to optimize this shit and i'm already seeing good results.. WOOHOO
I found out it's SOOOOOO MUCH easier to consume the datas when you break your trackings into 3 campaigns by carrier, then in each campaign you split testing operator/ad sizes/headlines etc..
Now i'm down to optimizing the other 2 carriers and finding their winning offer combos..
Sorry guys. i'm not outing any info of the carriers/operators/offers/networks..
It's my VERY first mobile campaign, and i'm seeing good potentials, I'm not about to invite any competitions to tank my first campaign - It will be very disheartening for me. Hope you guys understand..
Quick Update:
The conversion rate of my best offer tanked from 8% to 2.5% today.. Then I went ahead to check the stats in my CPVlab, using time vs (conversions + clicks), and noticed a trend.. but i still can't conclude anything yet.
I'm guessing there's TWO period of times that conversions will start taking place (because they come in bulk within span of couple hours).. can any pros confirm this?
May not be related, but you really should be checking the ping/redirect time of your CPVLab server... I had an issue where every few hours my redirects took seconds to complete, resulting in lost revenue and yes I was using beyondhosting. Took them awhile to convince them it was an issue on their end. They had to make some changes, which fixed the issue. You can test using pingdom.
Okay. After 1 week plus testing. I'm back with 1 more HUGE conclusion.
Before that, I want to give credits to nissangtr.
I took his idea, going WITHOUT a tracker, and BOOOOOOOOM.. guess what?
Red to green.
I'm too lazy to give out all my stats yet, but i can tell by using CPVlab as tracker, i'm losing clicks and I'm always near breaking even but NEVER got there.
Getting rid of the tracker got me profitable. Nice move...
UPDATE: After some tedious calculation (i have bad math), i realize CPVlab is losing 28.8% of my clicks. Whereas if I deal directly with a reliable CPA network, click loss is about 7.5%... HUGE DIFFERENCE. It's a make or break, honestly.
Thanks Joe... time and time again I tell people to stop using their own trackers unless they absolutely have to!

Time to ramp UPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP....
hmm... i found out that given the EXACT SAME 4 banners that i use across different carriers... Banner 1 can do very well in operator Carrier A, while it sucks in Carrier B; on the other hand, Banner 2 will kill in Carrier B but sucks in Carrier A...
How can 1 explain phenomenan like this?
Joe
Different demos of people use different carriers, may just be getting a bad batch of yahoos that don't click.
1. I joined MobAff by the Angry Russian, which is one of the best choices i made in my mobile campaigns
Why? which brings us to 2nd point..
2. Mobaff allows affiliates to rotate the offers they have, using their direct links, with VERY VERY minimal click loss.. i'm talkin abt 3% here. AWESOME.
So, I rotated the hell outta 2 different offers and ALL the Landers they have, you will be surprised how different these lander converted given the same offer (lowest 1.5% CR, highest 4.5% CR).. that's an immediate boost of 300% ROI (i hope my math is right)
3. i scaled out to 2 different mobile networks, 1 had an average CPC of $0.03 another i just bumped it to $0.07, i'm going to monitor the volume / profit i'm getting each day and going to bump the CPCs even higher as long as i'm still getting enough margin..
4. Scaling it to even more mobile networks..
Just wanna share what i'm observing, still very new in mobile..
Joe
fuck the rep in reporo isn't responding quickly, he's been dragging to upload my campaigns for 2 weeks, not up yet. Anyone got contact there?
UPDATE: I managed to get one traffic source to be profitable for me, but it's not pulling the margin i want, how can i take another step up and increase the margin?
Any pros wanna shed some lights?
Definitely a good read and a lot of juicy tips.
So how is your scaling of this campaign? Wish you all the best!
Increasing your margins has to do with split testing
Split test your ads, your landing pages etc.. make wildly different styles so you know the best type that converts
... Then scale to new sources
That's why i said.... DO NOT give up easily....
I dedicated my entire March to Mobile, spent about 1.5 - 2k in different traffic sources, most of them are breaking even, SLIGHTLY profitable (profit at 0.01/click wtf??), or just pure loss of money but overall i didn't profit. Learned a lot though..
Just when I was about to give up on 1 of the traffic sources (not jumptap), i was paying at 7 cents CPC but thing is my offer CPC is also hovering around 0.05-0.08... not gonna make it..
So, i had a chat with a fellow member "nissangtr" over skype the other day, he reminded me about CPM, yes, fuck, i have high CTR average 0.7% - 1%.. WHY DIDN'T I THINK OF IT. So i told my rep over there to make me entirely new campaign but on CPM, and stunning, CPC went down to 0.03 averagely, and i started profiting right away.....
What is this? I was testing sooooooooooooooooo many things and i totally forgotten about this fucking CPM feature which turned the table around, big time...
Now it's only been 2 days so i can't say that i WILL make money in the long run because from my understanding mobile offers are quite unstable they sometimes get high EPC then few days it go low... then up again... But i think i'm going somewhere here and will put in more budget to test the fuck out on different offers...
time to work
ciaoz
Nice man, glad I could help.
