Yes, this is my Late late entry to STM's mobile Follow Along Contest!
Unfortunately , my day job doesn't leave me much chance to post updates to these contests but I will do my best.
I have launched some mobile campaigns in the past , but I still consider myself a newbie. Hopefully, with this contest I can get some good tips so I can profit off mobile. Oh, and win something cool too.
My main experience right now in IM is with POF dating ads. I find mobile to be harder because it feels to me like throwing up a bunch of ads and hoping the right demographic sees them.
In my previous mobile camps, I tested dating ads but I had a hard time making them profitable. I felt like I was flying blind , without the demo targetting options, so for now, I'm staying away from dating. Besides, I think no one wants to see another dating follow along.
So, since this is my first experience in mobile, I am going to be throwing 4-5 campaigns up and see if I can get them to profit. Enough with the wall of text, let's get to it.
I will start promoting these in Jumptap. I have already signed up for Inmobi and Buzzcity, too.
Offer 1: Call Of Duty Offer for Feature Phones. Australia - Payout: $7.15
Right off the bat , I think this offer might not be good to promote. I made the mistake of getting carried away when I saw CoD branding and high payout on the offer without doing proper research. But I've got my banners made and maybe I can pull it off.

and do you give a reason for the bid request? why would they lower bids for people?
Just say, "Lower my bids or I'll fucking spank you."
For this campaign I decided to go with something similar to one of the first Case Studies here in the mobile section of STM:
Second Campaign: $1,000 Ikea Giftcard Email Submit (US) - Offer Payout : $8.70
There's not much info on the network on what constitutes a lead. Because of the high payout I am assuming this is not really an email submit but a PIN submit. One other reason to work with true mobile networks. This particular network has a bit of a mess with their mobile offers.

Creatives:
Someone posted some banners here on STM for Ikea, I took some of those and made some of my own. I'm going with only 300x50 for these and scale to other sizes after I see which banners work.
I am taking a cue from the study case and going with some funny images and regular banners.

Targeting:
Again, the network is lacking in info for the offer, there is no mention if this is restricted to a particular operator. I'm waiting to hear back from my AM on this.I decided to go with what I think are the big 3 (I'm not in the US so if I'm wrong on this, let me know):
Quick evening update.
I got my campaign approved and my bids lowered to $0.05 . I had a previous campaign lowered to $0.03 before but my Jumtap acct manager app decided to do $0.05 this time. Oh well
Once the campaign was approved, traffic started coming in really fast. I got like 20 clicks in under 10 minutes. It's pretty strange because a previous campaign I made with similar targetting never got such high impressions /clicks. It actually made me wonder if Jumptap was really blocking app traffic and I was getting a bunch of accidental clicks.
name impressions CTR clicks avg click price spent
Ikea ad campaign 73,464 0.2% 162 $0.06 $9.50
My network stats report 129 clicks , 0 conversions
On one hand I am pretty happy that clickloss wasn't too high. But zero conversions after 129 clicks ...
Don't know if this is too hasty but I am pausing this while I look for a similar offer.
Lesson learned: do your homework before picking a random offer. I get pretty impatient waiting for my AM to get back to me sometimes and go on a campaign launching spree without knowing if it converts.
EDIT: I just looked at my network's stats for the offer.
If you look at this, you can see I am not getting anything passed for JT_SITE. Does this mean these clicks are not coming from a site?

The AU campaign has been running for more than 12 hours now, and I've only received 9 impressions. I just increased the bids from 0,05 to 0,20 to see if its a problem of low bidding or just non-existent AU volume.
I had similar results with UK traffic even though my JT rep says that it's their second biggest market.
Some networks limit the number of variables you can pass, I think offermobi only allows 4 if that's who you are using. AU has extremely limited impressions in general, only FB and Adwords have a decent amount of volume.
You have to keep in mind that carriers, devices and sites can all convert very differently. It could be that there is one that will convert well, but you just haven't isolated the variable yet. I haven't ran this particular camp so I don't know.
My JT rep also recommended the UK, honestly I don't know why they're saying that. I'll ask later what the total number of impressions that served was, usually the total is a fraction of even a single small carrier in the US.
Edit: for example, on thumbplay I had ran 2,600 clicks through it before I got my first conversion. Then from that I could pinpoint what carriers and devices worked, while only taking out a few sites I was sure were bad. I'm not saying it's gonna be that hard, but it's possible.
Thanks for your input jackinspace!
Yes, so far I've found that Jumptap's INTL traffic is limited. Previous to this campaign I tried one UK campaign, where they are supposed to have a lot of traffic but I barely got any impressions.
My rep told me that the problem in AU basically was that most of the traffic they have is Wifi, and I blocked that. Also, that I need higher bids.
I am playing around with the bids and other settings to see if I can get any decent amount of traffic.
