JoshTodd's Mobile Payday Follow Along (Contest)

Since I am new to mobile, I figured now is as good a time as any to get going and participate in the contest. I’m not really going to hold anything back here, the main point is for learning and to help out other forum members who are just getting started as well. I’m looking forward to the feedback and seeing how this goes! Now on to the details...

Offer: 60 Minute Payday Mobile Optimized SHORT FORM
Network: Neverblue (Campaign 12186)
Payout: $6.25 / Lead
Conversion: First page submit with first and last name, email and zip code.

Here is how the offer page looks from my iPhone:

Traffic

I am going to be using Jumptap for this campaign, since I know they have a lot of US traffic. I’m going to be using the following targeting.

Platform: Android (lots of inventory for cheap, according to my JT rep)
Carrier: Cricket (the only prepaid / cheap carrier that currently has Android phones)
Bid: $0.05
I will split test App vs WAP traffic in two separate campaigns, starting with WAP.

For banners I’m going to be testing both the standard creative from Neverblue as well as some that I’ve created.

Banners:

Landing Pages

I am going to be split testing between direct linking and using a landing page, because the offer doesn’t do much to sell itself. It just gets straight to the form. I actually like this because that way I have more freedom to sell it on the lander. I will also be split testing two different landing page variations.

I created the landers myself using Photoshop and Dreamweaver.

To determine the size I needed to make the landing pages, I went to Cricket’s website and looked at the Android models they have available there. Then I looked up the display resolution for those devices. They had it listed right on the website. Here’s what I found:

Huawei Ascend II: 480x320
Samsung Vitality: 480x320
Samsung Transfix: 480x320
ZTE Score: 480x320
Huawei Mercury: 854x480

So with the exception of their high-end model, the Huawei Mercury, all the smartphones on Cricket have a resolution of 480x320. Check out this post by lifetweak for a simple trick to optimizing your page for mobile:

http://stmforum.com/forum/showthread...ers-for-Mobile

In Dreamweaver I created a blank document and chose “XHTML Mobile 1.0” for the DocType.

I also made sure to put in the meta tag recommended by the linked post above:

HTML Code:
<meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1.0"/>
I also used Adobe Device Central CS5.5 to check how the landers would look on the devices I’m targeting. It’s one thing to pull it up on my iPhone, but it’s a very different device than these cheap Androids so Device Central was very helpful.

So here are my two landing pages I will be testing:

LP1

LP2

Tracking

For tracking I am going to be using CPV Lab. Yes, I am aware that there can be some additional clicks lost due to this choice, but I think it’s worth it for the flexibility of being able to split test landing pages and direct linking with a custom split percentage and CPV Lab has the ability to use custom tracking variables. Plus, in the small tests I’ve done so far, I didn’t really experience any click loss at all. If it becomes a problem, then I can always split test it without it and just use Neverblue’s tracking since it is quite good for mobile. Here is how I have the campaign set up in CPV Lab:

Now all that’s left to do is set it up in Jumptap and set it live! Here is what my campaign looks like in JT.

Rinse and repeat 20 times and you get...

Now I'm just waiting for my rep to set my bids down to $0.05, which might be on Tuesday because JT is closed for President's Day.

I will update you guys when I've got some data to show!

Thanks for all the detail. On my way to understanding mobile now. Good Luck!

02-18-2012 05:12 AM #4 Mr Green (Administrator)

Oh damn this shit is getting serious! My bet is LP 1 will win the test as well as the creatives with the person holding the wad of cash.

Good stuff man!

damn nice screenshots!

Epic follow along

02-18-2012 09:41 AM #7 hmate9 (Member)

I am betting that APP traffic will do good as well, since in the UK I have seen a LOT of wonga ads. Wonga is a cash loan site too. Here is an example. They are obviously successful so maybe you can take some ideas from it:

Great follow along, thats a ton of creatives to weed through so its going to take some budget to get stat. sig. data.

Also, wondering why you're not rotating (2) offers right of the bat. What if this offer just sucks, wouldn't it be better to hedge your risk and test 2 to 3 offers to see?

02-18-2012 04:12 PM #9 kokofai ()

Good one josh! This is a very detailed follow along. Although I'm not into mobile yet but I will subscribe to this and hope you can get good results with it.

Angry Russian is right, rotate 2-3 offers to split test!

02-19-2012 10:18 PM #10 joshtodd ()

I definitely am going to rotate two, I'm adding the Regency Cash Loan offer from Neverblue as well. It's a bummer I couldn't launch before the weekend. But it might be ok since the day after bank holidays are supposed to be huge for cash advance offers. Looking forward to Tuesday.

02-19-2012 10:29 PM #11 stackman (Administrator)

Looooooking good! I know you have targeting pretty much spot on for this niche. With more volume you can get JT to lower your CPC but i'm not sure if you'll get clicks because the targeting is so tight.

Nice mix of ads too, are you tracking each ad individually?

02-19-2012 10:33 PM #12 joshtodd ()

Yes I'm tracking each banner separately with the JT_ADBUNDLE token. Should be helpful to see what type of banner angle is working then build more like it. If the volume isn't there I could try other carriers or traffic sources, but we'll see how it goes.

02-19-2012 11:21 PM #13 stackman (Administrator)

Volume may be low (i'm not sure), but for this type of offer you have to go with the targeted traffic that converts.

great overview! is it matter of just asking your rep to get them to override the cpc to $0.05?

02-20-2012 01:47 AM #15 joshtodd ()

Yep.

02-20-2012 03:40 AM #16 joshtodd ()

Here is the 2nd offer that I'm going to split test, Regency Cash Loan from Neverblue at $7.50:

Any updates?

03-02-2012 03:09 PM #18 joshtodd ()

Sorry guys I had to deal with a last minute move and some other personal issues. I will have an update on this soon!

03-02-2012 04:21 PM #19 telusd (Member)

this is really exciting

03-02-2012 06:16 PM #20 joshtodd ()

Ok it's been live for 10 minutes and I just realized I forgot to put the links in the landers. EPIC FAIL.

Glad I noticed that early due to the 0% CTR.

03-03-2012 02:15 AM #21 joshtodd ()

Today's spend was $25. It was split evenly between Web Page (WAP) and App traffic.

Here is the banner breakdowns. You can see that overall, the App traffic got higher CTRs. There were a few banners with 0.5%, which is decent. I did notice there was almost no impressions at all for the 300x250 banners. I guess JumpTap doesn't have much inventory in that size.

The CTR from the landing pages to the offer was about 7-8%, which is a lot lower than I had hoped. Here are the stats between the landing pages and both of the offers direct linked.

The bummer here is I've spent $25 on it and haven't gotten a single conversion yet. I do have some good data coming in though. There is a lot of data to sift through with publishers and site ids, but at this point I'm not sure if I should cut any yet. I'm considering trying a different traffic source.

What do you guys think?

03-03-2012 02:48 AM #22 joshtodd ()

On another note, there was only about a 10% click loss from JumpTap to Neverblue.

03-03-2012 06:39 PM #23 The Angry Russian (Moderator)

Josh, I'll be honest I tested those offers and I think theres something wrong with them. Try submitting fake data just let your rep know about it and see if a conversion fired.

03-03-2012 06:49 PM #24 bmcadvertising (Member)

Agreed w/ the Testy Siberian.

We let two of those offers run on JT (specifically, Regency & 60 - both from Neverblue) to a thousand clicks each with no conversion.

We were told a couple of weeks later that the offers were 'fixed' but I had no interest.

03-03-2012 07:42 PM #25 joshtodd ()

Well crap. Guess I'm gonna call it quits on this campaign then. On to the next one!

03-03-2012 07:46 PM #26 richardx (Member)

tried such offers months ago. its very good at 1st(epc $0.7x with direct linking). but just ran for days the offers paused and got back with new terms(conversion flow). then sucks. thousand clicks with no 1 conversion.

03-03-2012 07:49 PM #27 joshtodd ()

Yeah sounds like lots of people have experienced the same thing with these. That's too bad because the targeting is there and I think the niche has potential. Somebody needs to step up and create an offer that works.

03-03-2012 08:34 PM #28 deondup (Member)

I had the same problem with those offers. Spoke to my AM at Neverblue...

The advertiser "manually" fires the pixel. They manually check the lead and then decide if its "worth" firing the pixel. My AM assured me that the advertiser is legit and that they are fair.

I don't like that at all.

03-03-2012 08:35 PM #29 nissangtr (Member)

Tried these campaigns, but didnt back out and advertiser started retroing conversions. Better offers out there. However, my AM has told me these offers are doing well for some affilaites... Just couldnt make it work.

Holy Jesus, I wish I would have known that in the first place. Granted, I tested this offer back when I assumed mobile advertisers knew how to assess quality instead of just re-sizing their web landing page and expecting the same results.

"manually" approving your hard earned conversions..... oh mah god

lets hope the approver doesn't have a part time job as facebook ad approver as well. We all know how bipolar they are...

Nah they actually don't have an approver at all, thus the lack of conversions! :P

Happened to me as well (was running them with diff. network though). Had couple days with 0.4 epc, others sucked dry. Thanks for the case study efforts though!

03-06-2012 09:25 PM #34 steffen (Member)

I´m happy you did that case study. Was thinking about promoting those Payday offers swell lately. So you saved me that experience

03-07-2012 04:55 PM #35 PhilipShapiro (Member)

Had some bad experiences with them.. not very happy.
