Want To Learn Media? This is The Place To Start (well my 2 cents anyways)
Ok just wanted to make a short post about http://sitescout.com
I know the angry russian will slap me up side the head for posting this....(he is angry after all)
but for many of you this is a good place to start as it only has a $500 min to get in and you can spend very little and get feedback real quick on your ads....
And if things go well there is lots of room to scale....
They are aff friendly...
and you can cut them out at some point if you wanted to as its a fully transparent network.....
Intro to sitescout
http://screencast.com/t/2tsJYeI9k
I myself haven't ran a ton of traffic with them but what I can say is that....traffic converts and they do click.....

I know the site scout guys really well, the founder is a good friend of mine. Hit up matts@sitescout.com to get started buying there if you want with questions about the RTB and what not.
I also like adbuyer.com as a starting place as well for ad network buys

Sitescout is great, Matt is awesome.
Don't just go slinging shit at the wall and hope something sticks with this one. If you have a campaign that works and you know what Kind of metrics you need to make it work then go research the placements on Sitescout. The system will show you impressions up for grabs and what kind of content is allowed.
This is CPM buys so approach them slightly different. The way I did it is I calculate my Earning Per Visitor if using lander or EPC if DL. Then I test my top creatives (3 to 5) usually just 300x250 to minimize variables. I bid usually $5.00 - $10.00 CPM to ensure I win all the impressions. Sitescout only charges you 1 cent higher then the highest bidder. So you don't lose your shirt just watch your shit in 202 and Sitescout is pretty real time for the most part. Also set your dialy budget low. With this tactic it should only cost you $50 to $100 to get an instant read if a placement has potential or not.
Just to sum up KNOW YOUR METRICS

Mike got 5% CTRs by being creative, really creative. Some of the kind of ads aren't allowed now.
The CTR highest I've hit is around 1.5% - 2%. If you make default uncreative ads you won't have a chance, the gotta be creative! Study the sites you are targeting...

Damn I wrote a real long and awesome response, but timed out.
Here is the summary.
CTR depends on the site. If you're target social and your CTR can be low, and you can target news and your CTR might be higher. But all that matters are your METRICS
Example:
Earnings Per Visitor (not same as epc unless your DL) = .50
CPM = $2.00
CTR = 0.5%
Is this profitable placement? Heres the math 1000 x .005 = 5 clicks. $2.00/5 = $.40 cents per click or visitor. You know you're earning .50 so your ROI is going to be 20% LET ER RIP and optimize to get ROI higher
Now POP QUIZ
EPVisitor = $.60
CPM = $1.20
CTR = 0.2%
Is this placement profitable or not?
Moral of the story: KNOW YOUR METRICS

^ It'll be break-even.
So... with further testing, probably.
Thanks for the info.

@The Angry Russian : wowza. I went pretty blank not knowing my metrics, which explains why CTR wasn't too great and I wasn't breaking even or anything.

let me do my math bro.
1000 x 0.002 = 2 clciks.
$1.20/2 = .60 per click
your Monies per visitor = $0.60
so break even!
