VIDEO: How To Start With (POD) Print On Demand (Nora Inveiss)

Print on Demand: The Ultimate Guide to Launching & Scaling Your Ecommerce Empire

This is a summary of the presentation held by Nora Inveiss, Brand Manager at Printful (POD drop shipping company) that aired at the very first EcomWorld Online Conference.

Did you know you can attend the upcoming EcomWorld for free as an active STM member?!? Details are in this thread.

The next presentation I have chosen to write a summary for deals with Print On Demand (POD) which is one of the easiest eCom business models to start with.

Nora has prepared some great slides that I will be posting throughout the summary. Let’s start.

What exactly is print on demand drop shipping.

Nora starts by explaining what this business model is about.

The drop shipping part is clear: a third party stores, fulfills and ships products on your behalf.

Print-on-demand: printing system where products are made to order, instead of producing in bulk.

POD drop shipping: similar to standard drop shipping, but more customization and personalization is possible, you can even print single items based on customers specifications.

The following slide shows how the whole system works, it’s pretty self explanatory, so no commentary needed:

Pros of print on demand

Nora goes on with the pros of this business model.

The slide sums it up nicely again, you can see it below.

To sum it up, the main pros are tied to saving time, money and having the chance to experiment a lot, since you don’t need to print in large quantities upfront.

Cons of print on demand

There are some cons to this model as well obviously.

The main ones are the lack of control over the fulfillment process and the longer delivery times.

Check the slides for more points.

Who should use POD?

I really love how detailed the slides are in this presentation, I barely have to add any comments.

Let me post the next one.

What to look for in a POD partner

Nora shares some tips on how to select your first POD partner.

Do they sell the products you want?

Some partners offer more items than others.

Printuful prints 270+ products, for example.

Product and shipping prices? Is there enough room for profit?

What about quality? Not all POD partners are alike, check the product quality to prevent high return rates.

Consider ordering samples, actually you definitely SHOULD do this!

Do they integrate with your ecom platform? If they do, you can start almost immediately.

Quality of customer support? You want to choose a partner with a good level of support for sure as that directly impacts your brand.

Before you launch

Nora shares some general advice on what questions you need to solve before launching.

These are not specific to POD only but rather general business advice, so let me list them.

You need to understand your brand and what it stands for.

Why are you doing this, what’s your story, how are your products different?

You also need to understand your audience!

What products do they want, what price would they be ok with?

More tips are on the following slide:

How to scale

Scaling is quite easy with POD, just make sure you work with a partner that has the proper setup.

You don’t have to worry about the logistics and extra stuff to deal with the increased volumes.

Your job would be to focus on the marketing and creative part, so basically just the customer acquisition part.

Some tips on what to do are on the following slide:

I think this is a much lower risk way to dabble in ecommerce than doing Amazon FBA or even Shopify. Has anyone had experience in scaling these activities though? The main issue seems to be the relatively high prices for the end product.

I have a friend who is doing POD and using a Chinese supplier, he has a pretty specific product so I cannot mention that (he would kick me in the ...) but he is doing very nice numbers, especially during the major holiday periods.

POD can be a great business and just like you have mentioned, the risk is very low since it's all on demand orders.
